Aylin Rodan reviewed Sneffels Highline Trail

Absolutely beautiful trail! We started on Jud Weibe (Aspen Street trailhead), then took a left at Deep Creek and shortly after that a right onto Mill Creek. Followed the path shown to the high point, into the meadow and across and then completed the loop on Deep Creek to end up back where we started. (There are other routes down as well.) Following that route the ascent was fairly steep in parts and the descent easy-going. Took about 8 hours at a decent clip so bring enough food and water. Lots of great views, alpine meadows, aspen forest, waterfalls.... The scenery is constantly changing, keeping things interesting. Good idea to take rain gear given unpredictable weather patterns (we hiked through rain for a while). The trail is well marked and easy to follow, a short stretch of scree to be navigated right after the high point. Highly recommend!

Loved this trail today! Walked about 1.5 miles up a paved road from Mill Creek Canyon Rd to the trail head - the road goes through the woods and along a creek, and has little traffic. The lower part of the trail continues through the woods, with nice shade for a hot summer day. The upper part starts criss-crossing alpine meadows, more sun-exposed and full of wildflowers at this time of year. Also lots of butterflies all along the trail. The vegetation got dense alongside the trail in the meadows, but not to the point that it was difficult to follow the trail, and I felt fine in shorts despite plants rubbing against my legs. Also quite a few flies but not to the point that I felt motivated to put on bug spray. The trail meets up with the Destination Trail, so a loop is possible (would need to walk a mile back up Mill Creek Canyon Rd to the Porter Fork Trail if hiking down Destination). Looks like a loop would also be possible with Bowman Fork Trail. On the trail part of Porter Fork, on the way up (starting at 10:30 am) crossed paths with a man and his dog, and a group of four people (they told me I was the first person they had seen), and on the way down crossed paths with a couple and their dog, so very lightly trafficked even on a summer Sunday.

Beautiful day for a great hike! As others have said, there’s a fairly steep climb to the top of the cliff, then things flatten out in the Hidden Valley. According to the placard at the bottom, it’s two miles to the pass, which makes a natural turnaround point for a shorter hike, then another mile until the trail meets the Moab Rim trail. I had initially rejected the idea of doing the complete loop with the Moab Rim trail, because I thought it might be heavily trafficked with 4x4s, then briefly reconsidered when I talked to another hiker where Hidden Valley meets Moab Rim. According to her, there’s little 4x4 traffic until the trail gets close to the road, and they watch out for hikers. In the end, decided to go back the way I came on Hidden Valley to get the great views of La Sal on the way back, but I’d think about doing the complete Hidden Valley/Moab Rim loop (or vice versa) in future. I spent 3 h 40 min on Hidden Valley with lots of stops for pictures and a stop for lunch. Crossed paths with maybe 15 people during that time, mostly hikers, a few trail runners. Trail is easy to follow and in great shape right now, it got a little windy in parts but mostly blue sky and bright sun. Definitely recommend!

I took the gondola from Telluride to Mountain Village and hiked up to San Sofia. Pretty trail mostly through aspen forest. I wanted an easygoing trail after several days of more strenuous hikes and this fit the bill. A lot of construction noise from Mountain Village especially on the lower part of the trail. Had the trail to myself until I got to the top.

Wide, gentle trail most of the way up (plenty of kids on the trail), great falls, and pretty up and back.

Beautiful morning hike! Hillside ridges, aspen forest, mountain meadows, and great views of the mountains to the west, Telluride town and the ski mountain.

    Sunday July 16.
    Phenomenal hike!
I'm a middle-aged woman , moderately fit with not-so-good knees. This hike was a workout but well within my capability. Trekking poles helped with the knees and I was glad to have them. I got started at 8:15 am, temperature in the low 70s, very comfortable hiking in shorts and a T-shirt. Took about two hours to get to the lake, with a bunch of stops to enjoy the views and take pictures. I spent almost two hours at the lakes, exploring the other two lakes and the falls, rehydrating/refueling/recharging, taking pictures, and simply relaxing. I could have easily spent longer there.... I saw people fishing and someone relaxing in a hammock. Took almost two hours to get back (slow progress down due to the knees...) My car thermostat said it was 94 degrees out by then, but I never felt hot due to the breeze and the fact that a good part of the walk is shaded. Still some patches of snow on the peaks at the top but it was warm and sunny there, and the trail itself was dry and clear. Heeding other posts, I put insect repellent on when I set out and at the top, and wasn't bothered by mosquitos or other insects. Also put on several layers of sunscreen. Agree with recommendations to take lots of water - I took 3 liters, drank two liters up and back, then another half liter in the car on the way home and still felt dehydrated by the time I got home. Trail was moderately trafficked, especially on the way back, but people were accommodating to others so didn't have a lot of issues there, and it was easy to find solitude, especially at the top. Really beautiful trail and at the top, with vistas, mountains, lakes, falls, aspens and wildflowers - highly recommended!

Jan 2017. Did part of this trail a couple days ago, came back today to do the full loop and loved it! Muddy in parts, but less so than Hau'ula loop last week. Parts of the trail are damp and jungly, other parts more open and drier. I didn't have my phone or a map, but the trail was very easy to follow, and marked the whole way with pink and orange ribbons. I went counterclockwise (i.e., took a right when I came to the hiker sign), which meant the ridge with ocean views was at the end. The ridge portion is a relatively short stretch of the trail overall though. In the counterclockwise direction, the trail goes up for a while, then down for a while, then another short up and down at the end. Wearing short sleeves, long pants, and no bug spray, I got two to three mosquito bites (the damp jungle sections are buggy, though sounds like less so than in summer).

Jan 2017. Loved this trail! Tons of trails in different directions, GPS with this app was helpful for staying oriented. Lots of flat easy hiking. Also parts of the trail (Party Line trail) that seemed designed for mountain biking, with lots of ups and downs and banked curves, which I decided to skip. But it was easy just to go a different way. Only encountered one person on a mountain bike over a couple hours of hiking. Mostly shaded with a nice breeze off the ocean. No views of the ocean on the part I hiked. Would definitely do this one again, and explore more of the different trails.

This isn't going to be a solo hike through the woods, but it's a great way for everyone, no matter what ability, to enjoy the natural beauty the island has to offer. You do have to pay, but hopefully some of that money goes towards conservation efforts.

Jan 2017. I entered the trail through an unmarked entrance next to the school, across from the basketball court off the parking lot, next to an orange sign. Moderately steep ascent at the beginning, then easy hiking in the pine forest - very pretty. There's a vista point overlooking the coast on the way up. At the turnaround point (as marked here), there were a bunch of additional trails in different directions; in fact I wouldn't have realized it was the turnaround point without my phone/GPS, and if I had more time the other trails would have been nice to explore! Saw a number of people on the initial/final stretches, but beyond that I was alone.

Muddy in parts, but I did it in tennis shoes (though they ended up covered in mud). I'm usually a mosquito magnet but didn't have any spray and only got one bite. I went clockwise, beautiful views on the way down. Parts of the trail are covered with soft, springy pine needles that were great to hike on. I saw footsteps but didn't see anyone on the trail. Great birdsong and trees! Don't do this for the waterfalls (they're pretty small) but otherwise a very pretty hike.
