One of my favorite hikes because it’s a hard hike that is super close to the city. The first hour and half is very hard; rock scramble on hands and knees for the first hour. If you are petite like myself, having your knees covers w a compression or long pants could help. It was about 100 degrees on the 4th of July so I only wore shorts and my knees were banged up. Bring A LOT of water and sunblock if it’s over 85 degrees - the first hour you’ll be fully exposed to the sun with very little shade.

Breakneck Ridge is def hard during the first mile up, which was an hour rock scramble for us. I found it particularly hard for me as I am petite and had to find my way up without banging up my knees - would consider covering my knees and wearing gloves the next time around. The rock scramble was very fun in a challenging way. I would have given this trail 5 stars but will only rate it 4 stars because it is PACKED with hikers. We decided not to do the 6 mile loop with the crowd and wondered off to a different trail down to Cold Spring via Notch Trail, Washburn, Bull Hill and then Undercliff. We bumped into the remnant of an amazing old stone farmhouse, a small running creek, saw a crazy huge hornet's nest, and even heard a woodpecker along the trail.

I'd def recommending that route if you are looking for less of a crowd, more uphill cardio and space to be one with nature. It's also great to end up in a small cute town to refuel, re-hydrate and grab a bite to eat around civilization.

Easy 90 min train ride from Grand Central.
