The trail was beautiful, and the overlook is awesome. I'll be frank though, the overlook is really the main feature here. Hiking up to the loop and the fort is demanding, challenging, and... the payoff just isn't there. I love history and even I wasn't mega impressed, the only thing I could think when I got there was... "This is a perfect place for a fort, nobody on earth would like to march to this area and take it, and it's kind of boring." The trail is also rather badly marked once you get away from the beaten path of the overlook trail. It was quite challenging though and the overlook was beautiful enough to give it 4 stars.

I've done this trail 3 times now and it is one of my absolute favorites. The accessibility and parking is wonderful, and it's far enough away from the cities to make for a nice and quiet experience once you are past the initial part that runs along the highway. The fall colors are wonderful and the rocks themselves are so fun to sit on and look out over. It's my go to trail for anyone who can handle hiking as most people seem to be able to tackle this trail. It definitely earns its moderate rating but you get a blessing for your knees as once you get to the top of the initial incline you are treated with a few miles of flat-ish trail. Go treat yourself to Black Rock as well, it's worth it and still on level trail so it's not that much harder to get to.

Was a gorgeous view on top. Sure the gravel road to get there is a little sketch at times, and the hike itself gets really rocky. You'll know what I mean when you see it. Make SURE that when you get to the top, you go down BOTH trail paths. If you can't stand up, and turn 360 and see EVERYTHING with no obstructions or trees, you aren't there yet. There's a pretty awesome view of Table Rock that some might mistake for the top of the mountain. Open up your app and head back and then towards the summit for a breathtaking, and windy, view of the world.
