Anne Glass reviewed Covered Bridge to Pleasant Hill Dam Trail

A part of the trail had recently been bulldozed which left a very muddy mess. What a hack job! I picked up lots of fishing line and trash along the river bank. Not my favorite trail.

Easy, enjoyable trail along the river. Plenty of wildflowers and nice views. There were many people fly fishing, kayaking, trail running and birding. The pit toilets were clean and easy to find. I went on a Saturday but there was plenty of parking and and the trail wasn’t overcrowded.

The island is covered in walnut trees. If you plan on hiking the super easy trail during early autumn, heads up! I saw people get hit in the head by falling walnuts and it looked painful. Surprisingly not the most scenic hike since you’re only allowed to hike less than half of the island. The island is owned by Dow Chemical and is leased to WVSP system.

I was appalled at the blatant disregard for park rules here. Dogs are NOT allowed at state nature preserves and there was an obvious sign posted saying so, but I saw many dogs on the trail. At the bridge, a stupid parent allowed their young son to enter the endangered area and throw rocks around and completely disregarded the conspicuous sign that forbade exit from the trail and that explicitly said it is ILLEGAL to leave the trail in order to restore sensitive plants in that particular habitat. Fucking morons. I’m see this disrespectful and ignorant behavior more and more at nature preserves and parks. Makes me want to slap them upside their empty heads.

I hiked from the dam to dock 4 and back and wow, this trail is charming. Beautiful views, quiet, lots of birds and the forest smelled so sweet and piney. Nice little rock formations, decent changes in elevation and a few steep places. I suggest trekking poles as the trail is already covered in dead leaves. It took me three hours exactly and that included several stops for photos and water. This trail is so much better than Wildcat Hollow which is right next door. There are several places to take a dip in the lake or filter water. A few trees blocking the trail but they’re easy to get over and the blow downs looked recent so I’m sure they’ll get cleaned up soon. I’m not sure I’d rate this section as easy, it’s more moderate. Loved it!

Since my last visit to WH the trail has been extremely well blazed with white diamonds. Super easy to navigate. I did the big loop overnight.
I made a water drop at the 7mile mark which was so helpful since there is no potable water on trail.
My only complaint is that I camped 2/10 of a mile from the road and the locals woke me up at 11:30 pm being very loud on atv’s and yelling for almost an hour. Not ideal. Try to camp away from the road crossings. I heard generators, many dogs barking and a lot of road traffic on a Friday night.
I suggest going on a Friday. Saturday there were a lot of people to pass on the trail. Please pack out all of your garbage and leave no trace.

I've been going to HPSP since I was a very young kid. I always return here with my parents to walk this loop. Lots of birds and easy enough for the whole family. I love the sound the wind makes as it rushes through the pine tops.

Everyone should make a trip here. It's pretty, especially in autumn. The trail down is steep and relatively short. Rock House is cool and dark and has some nice views. It's almost always busy and filled with kids who like to scream so they can hear their voice echo. You should check it out, if only once.

I like this short trail because I never see another soul hiking down in Meigs Co. I've seen lots of Bobcat tracks here. Nice for birding, easy and peaceful. Bring your kayak and paddle the lake or head down the road and use the Ohio river access and paddle all day. This park has the biggest campground I've seen down here and it's basically empty.

This trail is well maintained and follows a part of the lake. The views are not that spectacular but it's an easy trail and pretty in autumn. I see lots of kids and families on this hike. Good for birding.

A tidy trail with excellent spring ephemerals and a wide variety of native plants. Great for birding. A quick two miles, half the trail is low and half is ridge top. One of my favorite places as I rarely see others there.
