I took the Elder then Taylor trail from the big parking lot at the Towsley site and it took me to the small new parking lot near across the street from the freeway's towering concrete refinery machine on the Old Rd. Had to go down Old Rd a little to get back on the trail through another gate. Lupine flowers barely starting to sprout. Just green grass on the trail. If you want a peaceful shorter hike than the big view loop without the crowd, this is it. I will come back in a few more weeks to see if the hills will be covered in flowers, like last year.

My friends and I got there around 10 AM today and there were very few people on the trail. We took the trail from the parking lot on the left side of the entrance, behind the rock where there are a few picnic tables. Spotted the cave way off in the distance. Surprisingly it was not difficult nor did it take a long time to get to it. The photos from the cave came out amazing. Next time we will try to reach it a shorter way, from the metal gate on the right side of the access drive, just before you get to the big parking lot. Find the creek bed and head left. You'll see the cave on the right eventually. Total loop to cave and back around 4.11 miles.

Really fun driving here. Very short easy walk. No need for bug spray in November.

4/16/17-This hike was not easy for me since I've only gone hiking no farther than 5 miles before. The weather warmed up quite a lot more since I was last here a couple of months ago to do the Punchbowl trail. The beginning climb was not steep but it was a very long climb. And then the continuous ups and downs which seemed like it went on forever, got me huffing and puffing in the dry desert air. I brought plenty of water (more than I thought I'd need, just in case) which added to my load, but I barely had enough towards the end. Encountered a gopher snake and a rattler on the trail. Just waited for them to cross and continued on our way. View at the Chair was fantastic. Took a 360 view video. We ate our lunch in the shade by the signs where the trail splits between the chair and Burkhart Trail. One stream crossing on the way, with very cold and refreshing water to wet the arms and cool off. On the way back, pay close attention to the trail signs so not to miss your turn back. Part of my group went too fast ahead and went the wrong way. Added 2 miles to the hike.

Went on weekend of 4/2/17 - Constant gusty wind really dries you up so bring plenty of water, lip balm, and sun protection! I got really burned even though I put on sun block. If it were not for the wind it would have been too hot so it's great for our very long hike. We parked 2 miles out from the main parking lot instead of sitting in the car an hour waiting to get into the lot. But the lines for the ladies room was an hour long wait at the visitor's center. Needless to say the view was worth it especially from up high.

Had a super time hiking to M.A.S.H. site and ate snack there under a covered patio area with picnic tables, before heading out to climb a rock wall and over to the dam. Then we headed over to the rock pool and did a little more scrambling around the pond area. It was beautifully lush and green right now, which made for great photos. Trails were pretty flat once we descended down shortly past the trail head, and then some parts of the trail was really rocky and uneven, which made it fun. Shoes with good ankle support helped a lot. Other parts of the trail were soft and sandy. I kept on losing GPS signal so my recordings came out inaccurate and jagged. I had 3 apps tracking, but none of them came out right :-( Oh, watch out for poison oak in shadier areas.

Beautiful view with wild flowers on one side and valley down below. No shade, so best to go on a day with cool breeze. We went in early March and it was a very easy hike.

I went Sunday and had to park in the second parking lot as the first one was packed full by mid morning. The second lot is a ways in down a dirt/gravel drive, bumpy and not very well maintained. I would not recommend it if you don't want to get your vehicle covered in dirt. A lot of people down by the waterfall. Apparently half of them didn't realize the water is partly composed of street run-off yucky sewer water and diving off the cliff into the pond, and some were letting their children walk in the creek with bare feet. Gross!
Stagecoach Bluff trail was beautiful. One spot was covered in yellow wild flowers which was perfect for photos.

We did the 5.1 mile loop today. Weather was perfect with a cool breeze. Hills looked green and the trail looked like it was raked recently in the steeper areas and very easy to get around. We went all the way to the back and did the counter clockwise direction. After a series of switchbacks, we crossed a small tar field with a couple of ways to step across it without any problems, and later we smelled sulfur at one section on the way up too. Then after passing the bench and most of the decline back down, there was a small bubbling tar pit that was fun to see off the side of the trail. It was great to see and hear the creek running with water again after so many years of drought. Started at 9:30 and finished by noon, just in time for lunch. Couldn't have timed it better!

This was my first time visiting and hiking the Punchbowl trail. It was 40 degrees when we got there around 10am and was drizzling (2/26). We saw a tiny bit of snow on the trail but it was not muddy or slippery. The landscape was really interesting at every turn, and the misty weather made perfect photographs. It was a fun hike down to the creek with plenty of water in it, and snow on the mountains. Definitely worth a revisit and have to come back and try the trail to Devil's Chair next time.

It was so much fun climbing the rocks and the surrounding hills are so green! This is the time of year to come out; perfect temperature and great photos. Wear shoes with good traction for climbing. It made a huge difference for me.
