Steep climb and the intensity of the incline increases quite a bit from the saddle to the top of Big House, but so worth the view. To get more out of the hike, at the first switchback we opted to scramble directly up to the overlook... more for the seasoned hiker as it’s moderately exposed. Just up the ridge from the overlook is a balanced rock formation, remarkable to see and a great pic opportunity.

Made a loop out of this hike by taken Dragon Tooth Trail, returning AT and back to Dragon Tooth Trail via Boy Scott Trail (not marked in AllTrails but visible on site map and well blazed). Roughly the same miles if we took Dragon Tooth up and back. High traffic, steep inclines, multiple switchbacks and several rock scrambles. Views at the top of summit were beautiful, end of October... leaves changing. AT trail was active and follows the ridgeline with a few overlooks... valleys on both sides. The Dragon Tooth Summit ridge was exposed, great views even if you don’t scramble to the very top. But if you need time to climb, high traffic may be unsettling. Great hike!

The drive to this trail is beautiful in and of itself, riding along a creek and rapids. We hiked Hotel to AT to the top of Cole Mountain and back via AT. Steady incline, multiple switchbacks and easy to follow path. This day brought rain and fog so we didn’t get the 360 views as noted for this trail, but just as breathtaking. Seeing trees unfold in a field of fog had an awesome mystic feel.

Nice trail... Following alongside the river and multiple cascading falls. Going clockwise allows you to come up on the falls, with the exception of the first one where you’ll come up from behind it, but can climb down to the bottom to get a great view.

One of the better defined and marked trails of AT. Steady incline to the top. The overhang and its views are incredible... definitely can see how it’s one of the most photographed spots on AT.

This trail is active’ terrain with multiple water crossings (best with waterproof hiking sandals that have great traction), rock scrambling, with steep inclines/descends and parts of the trail are washed out that forces you to scale side of cliffs to get thru. Only one section offers a rope to guide you across, the remaining requires careful scrambling. Worth the challenges... beautiful swim hole(s) and waterfall. (Did spot copperhead on trail).

REI picks this trail as one of ‘thee’ best hikes in SNP, and I agree! Experienced torrential down pour for most of the hike, even without that I would recommend a hiking waterproof sandal that is durable with great traction... lots of wet rocks and with parts of the river overflowing you cross ‘rapid’ like waters. Wanted to challenge myself so went down Jones Run and up Doyles River... it is a steep incline!! Trail clearly warns of black bears. Don’t forget your bear bell... I didn’t see any but I hope it’s cause they heard me coming!

Angel Marotto reviewed Hawksbill Gap Loop via Appalachian Trail

One of my favorite hikes! Went counterclockwise, (AT | Salamander | peak | Lower Hawksbill Trail). Perfect balance of great terrain, elevation and some of the best panoramic views. On the trail, you’ll cross over rock fields in the middle of the trail. To note... From this direction, you’ll come to a fork in the road. There is a wooden pole with an arrow spray-painted on it that points right. Going that way will continue on Appalachian Trail to Rock Spring Hut. To complete the loop (to Salamander), go left (opposite of the arrow). I went about .5 miles before realizing and having to backtrack. On course... great climb to the highest peak in SNP!

Beautiful falls. Started at upper Whiteoak on Skyline Drive and hiked all the way down to lower Whiteoak. Like most trails in this park not clearly labeled, and easy to venture off onto other trails. If you do both sets of Whiteoak Canyon trails (upper & lower), give yourself time to hike back before dusk... tougher trek back. And it is about a 50 minute drive from the lower parking lot back up to the upper (Skyline) parking lot.

Great urban trail... and feels outside of the city. Narrow trail that’s shared by bikers and hikers and at certain times be high traffic, but not enough to deter from the trek.

Awesome to hike along the river and rapids! A must to stop on the rocks/boulders to take in the scenery.
