    Andrew Sandage reviewed Grandstaff Trail

I found this to be a surprisingly enjoyable hike, but would recommend doing it as part of a canyoneering trip (a lot of the places in Moab offer a Morning Glory route that drops you right on the trail). There are great views of the canyon, and a number of creek crossings that make it a little more fun than a standard hike.

A very short trail up to Double Arch. There's nothing interesting about the trail itself, but the arches themselves are very cool, and the rocks underneath can be fun to climb around on.

This is THE hike in Arches, as it is the trail that will get you up close and personal with Delicate Arch, the park mascot. Because of this, obviously it does attract the crowds, but despite this it is also a pretty interesting and challenging hike, which I found surprising (I was expecting something that was much more catered to tourists). The slickrock is fun to navigate over, and there is a nice arch near the top that you can see Delicate Arch through that is worth a stop and some pictures.

I personally did this one at sunset and stayed for the night sky, which was worth it. There were stars aplenty, and far fewer people than during the day.

The hike up is somewhat strenuous as it is a steady upward climb (personally I enjoyed the challenge), and it has really nice views of the canyon as you near the top. The waterfall and lake itself is quite beautiful, and the extra little way to get up to the spouting rock and additional waterfall is well worth it. My only complaint is the parking and crowds, which can clog the trail at times. Come earlier to avoid them.

Great views of the Yellowstone Canyon on this. While there is the trail that can be walked in its entirety, there are also parking spots at various places so you can make this work however you please in terms of whether you want to hike it or just stop at the designated viewpoints. I went as the sun was setting and it was incredibly beautiful.

Yes, Yellowstone is incredibly busy and there will be people everywhere at the geyser basin trails, but in my opinion, it is totally worth dealing with the crowds. The Grand Prismatic is an absolutely beautiful geological wonder. The boardwalk is cool but the overlook is even better in my opinion.

An absolutely amazing hike. Did this back in July. It requires a ferry ride to get to the trailhead so make sure to stop by and grab a ticket beforehand.

The trail itself winds through the mountain forests before breaking through the tree line. There are a couple very cool waterfalls on the way up, and the last part of the hike is amazing and intense, with a ladder up to a cave and then some cliff side scrambling (with a cable for safety) to get to the valley where the trail’s namesake is located.

Leaving the trail also requires a ferry back. Don’t miss the last one or they’ll leave you and send the park rangers to pick you up later. When we hiked there were two women who got left behind. Know your limits and watch the clock so that this doesn’t happen to you.

Not my favorite hike in Joshua Tree. We only did the out and back portion of the trail, rather than the loop, so I can’t speak for that portion. It’s by no means a bad hike, but just doesn’t compare to some of the other hikes the park has to offer.

Andrew Sandage reviewed Cholla Cactus Garden Nature Trail

A very short walk through a mass of cholla cacti. It’s definitely worth a quick stop (the trail is very short and can be done in a few minutes) and the view to the south towards the Pinto Basin with all the cacti in the foreground is very beautiful.

They were out of the informational pamphlets when we were there which was unfortunate.

Definitely more “touristy” due to the short length and ease of the hike, but still fun to see. Would recommend doing this either earlier or later in the day to beat or follow the crowds as there is sometimes some congestion around Skull Rock. Climbing on the surrounding rocks is fun and a good way to get away from some of the people in the trail.

A short and easy hike through some interesting rock formations and vegetation. The informational signs in the area are pretty neat. There’s fun to be had scrambling around the rocks.

The trail isn’t really labeled until you get up close, but it’s in the White Tank campground.

Definitely more “touristy” due to the short length and ease of the hike, but still fun to see. Would recommend doing this either earlier or later in the day to beat or follow the crowds as there is sometimes some congestion around Arch Rock.

A fun little loop amongst the rocks and various vegetation of Joshua Tree. The trail is pretty short and easy, and has a lot of opportunities for exploration amongst the rocks. The history of the valley is pretty cool so take the time to read the informational signs.

Definitely more “touristy” due to the short length and ease of the hike, but still fun to see.

A fun little hike in Joshua Tree. Pretty short and easy. Like a lot of places in Joshua Tree, the rock formations are pretty fun to explore and climb. The dam itself and the history are pretty interesting.

Definitely more “touristy” due to the short length and ease of the hike, but still fun to see.

I did this as part of the Lost Palms Oasis hike and would definitely recommend doing the two of these together, as they offer some great views of the southern side of the park and the environment beyond. The path up to the very top of the peak is just a bunch of boulders that need to be scrambled over, but it isn’t very challenging and is very much worth it. The view from the top is absolutely amazing.

One of my favorite hikes in Joshua Tree. Lots of cool vegetation and rock formations, and the oasis is a great place to break for a lunch below the palms. The view between the mountains approaching the oasis is great, as are the views on almost the entire return hike, where the San Jacinto mountains and Salton Sea can be seen.

Either on the way there or the way back make sure to stop by Mastodon Peak for some amazing views. The path up to the very top is just a bunch of boulders that need to be scrambled over, but it isn’t very challenging and is very much worth it.

Amazing hike! The 5 mile dirt road to get here isn’t too bad. Was pretty easy in our Ford Focus. The hike itself is great, but can be difficult to follow at times due to the lack of signs. Keep an eye out for the rock arrows showing the path. We missed the Ladder Canyon portion on the way up, but took it down on the way back.

The great thing about this hike is the diverse scenery. We spent time in a deep and wide canyon, then came out on a ridge line overlooking the Coachella Valley and Salton Sea, then went through the narrow slot canyon with the ladders. It kept the hike fresh and exciting.

Hiked this back in July. Amazing hike with great views as a good length of the trail is along the side of the mountain with the valley and Going to the Sun Rd below. Shuttled up to Logan Pass and then hiked back to the car that way.

There’s a short path a little over half way through that goes up to the Grinnell Glacier overlook. Would definitely recommend this but while the hike is short, the elevation gain is pretty tough at this point. If starting from Logan Pass, there’s a nice little stream/watering hole near the end of the trail that was wonderful to sit in after doing the hike.
