    Andrea M reviewed Castle Trail

Very unique trail. We went out after a rain and it was extremely slick. But once we got back to the start it was dry. Rain makes for a very different trail experience. The trail crossed in front of big horned sheep that were grazing on a cliff . We did the medicine loop out and the castle trail back. This clocked in at 11.1 miles. Definitely do this early as there is very little shade and you are in full sun and wind exposure. Other than the slipperyness because of the rain it’s not hard or technical - the only hard part about it is 11 miles round-trip.

This is a horribly signed trail. We had different map versions, including the one at the start, and none matched up. The signage is few and far between. The trails are named by colors and the colors on the signs did not always match up with what trail we thought we are on. I was following along with with the AllTrails map and was having difficulty keeping us on the trail.

The trail was relatively easy other than a few scrambles up and down near the radio tower where you needed your hands as well.

The fun part for me about the trail was that it is part of an active ranch. So there are cows in the are and we encountered cows at the end of the trail near the water cistern. That being said that means there are cow patties along most of the trail. So if you do not like jumping over and walking around cow patties for a good chunk of your hike, this may not be for you.

This is a paved trail that goes around Devils Tower. It is very easy if you are in decent shape.

This was a fun, easy trail. The most surprising part was the amount of incline and decline on it. Nice views of Devils Tower but also of the surrounding area which is a very very nice as well. We tied this in with doing the devils tower trail and you can also tie this in with doing the trail that goes around the prairie dog area. I really liked the wild lavender that grows along the trail. This took about an hour to complete.

Great trail. We went up #9 and came down #3 to #4. We parked at Sylvan Lake which is part of Custer State Park. You must pay an entrance fee to park at Sylvan Lake as part of Custer State Park and the entrance fee is good for a week. The trails actually then leave Custer State Park and go into the Black Hills national forest where are you sign an entrance document on the trail. The trail is well maintained, dirt and rocks and not technical. The hardest part was probably going up the incline and the stairs at the end to reach the fire tower. The fire tower at the end was a lot of fun to explore - lots a little nooks and crannies. This clocked in at 7.6 miles and took us 3 1/2 hours. The scenery and views throughout were amazing. If you are in decent shape you will be fine on this

Andrea M reviewed Hollywood Sign via Canyon Drive

This was a relatively easy trail to the Hollywood sign. The hardest part about this trail is that it is straight up to get to the Hollywood sign. I started from the Canyon Road parking lot and went to the back of the sign first and then the front of the sign. In total that was 7.5 miles. If you only go to the front of the sign it is 5.7 miles. Listen to what everyone else says -go out super early, there is no shade. You’ll need sunblock, a hat, water and sturdy footwear. The ground is not technical at all, it’s a flat hard pack and actually at the very top its asphalt to the front of the sign.

This clocked in at 6 miles total out and back. The1,700 feet of elevation gain is what makes this trail hard. If you are in good climbing shape, you will be fine. First mile of trail is an easy wide trail with hard pack dirt and switchbacks. You get more roots during the 2nd mile, and then rocks and rock slabs during the 3rd mile (most technical part of the trail). Views are spectacular. Don't recommend this trail during or after a rain, the rocks and summit will be very slick. Made it in 1:20 up and 1:05 back- we were moving at what we felt was a good pace. Went thru 2 liters of water.

This was a great hike. The incline was tough for me but doable. Used trekking poles for the way up. Made it up in 3:20. Lots of roots and rocks. Good amount of mud and some mini water crossings. Did not use trekking poles on the way down, made it in 2:40. Flush toilets at the start of the trail and at the summit were a nice hiking luxury. Went through 3 liters of water.

I echo everyone's comments- don't do this during or immediately after a rain. The trail itself becomes a stream and everything gets washed out and slippery. Some of the rocks were slick even with no rain for a few days.
