It was nice getting out and on this trail for some off roading adventure. I am not sure why the distance shows 11ish miles whereas it should show more than double, like around 26ish miles.

From start point to the Watson lake it was 90% of paved road. From Watson lake to end point is a dirt track with rocks of all sizes. Non 4x4 are not recommended and will be very hard for the second half of the stretch.

To start from Tahoe city, pass the 73 start point and goto Bunker rd, turn left where it says ‘820’ (it sounds like a private road but is not). At the end, where house number 820 is, you will be greeted with a dirt track, follow this which will turn into paved rd.

Aman Singh reviewed Western States Trail to Calcutta Falls

@Jenniffer, yes those were the falls, next to the small wooden bridge. As I mentioned, it is this time of the season that the falls are running very low on water. We were told by a regular hiker on this trail to come back in winters if we want to see the falls in full swing.

Did this today, it was damn hot and too dry. Trail was good though and the falls are running very low at this time of the season. If you go to the river below you can spend some quality time in water but there is no shade around water. We’ll return to this trail in winters again and hope to see the waterfall in it’s full swing.

The falls itself were very refreshing. As for the trail, we took a different route to the falls. Right off of freeway 80 in Auburn, we took Forest hill road which leads us to Lake Clamentine road. This is more hard than the normal trail as it loses elevation pretty quickly and coming back up is fairly hard, of course if you are on foot (and we were, and it was not fun coming back up!). There is parking right off of the falls but I think it is only for people who bring their boats, and it is small which fills up quickly on a weekend.

Me and my wife did this trail this Saturday. There are big rocks on the trail, then after sometime there is gravely trail. It is hard with normal shoes because you have to put every step very carefully on the rocks so as not to slip. There is small waterfall at around 1 mile which is good to chill for a bit.

BONUS: Climb the rocks on the side of the waterfall and follow the stream, there is another pool filled with water worth seeing and dipping in. All in all a good experience.

PS. Do not park your car until you reach the parking lot at the trailhead, you might get lucky and find a parking right there. I saw some sedans climbing up that one lane road that leads up to the trailhead parking, so do not worry if you are not sure if your car will make it (I seriously though the road was small enough and filled with potholes that small sedans/hatchbacks cannot make it but I was wrong)!
