Jeff Snyder reviewed Old Rag Mountain Loop Trail

I really enjoyed this. Much of the hike is moderate and uneventful, but the lengthy boulder scrambling makes it amazing. I drove from Philly and stayed in a hotel the night before so that I could make a 6am start. I would not recommend doing it any other way, and Ill explain why. Mountain time is the time for me to flush life's anxieties out of my head. I did it solely for this reason knowing that the crowds get ridiculous here on a weekend. And I was by myself for 90% of the trip. And the unexpected and most wonderful part of this, was that the rock scramble is fairly technical. With the crowds in a constant bottleneck through the obstacles, you would just be following the masses through a predetermined route. Doing it alone, made me have to identify, often by trial and error, what was the best/only way to get to the next step. As someone who is working to overcome a fear of heights, it was so much more satisfying to overcome each challenge by myself without following, having advice, or even having help available. Views are amazing and plentiful. Bugs were nonexistent this day, and the weather is perfect this time of year. Only recommendation I give is definitely have boots with great grip, as there is often no stable footing and grip is all you have; and lightweight gloves with some grip in the palms were very helpful as well with the scramble. I promise you won't be disappointed with this climb.

Great park all around. The Billy Goat A trail is clearly the attraction here, but I enjoyed it all. While challenging at times, I would probably rate it more moderate for someone in decent shape, and def with quality boots. As loop A was done first, I found myself disappointed that the rest of the trip was going to be too easy, much of it on a towpath. I almost skipped it and headed back to the car, but for the sake of exercise I kept on. I was pleasantly surprised to find that while not a challenge, there were many awesome sights. I recommend this to anyone who wants a short quality hike. I drove 3 hours each way strictly for this, and I am glad I did. It's worth the effort to get here.

This park, and specifically this trail are amazing. The waterfalls are endless. The physical hike itself is what I would moderate at best. I stayed to the left at the fork and took the more difficult option at the split. Still, I have a hard time understanding the hard rating when I passed scores of toddlers tagging along with their parents. Now my warning. I personally go to the woods to battle my anxiety. Nature is good for me to relax. Being as the fourth of July was on a weekday, and I assumed everyone would be BBQing, I headed out for some much needed me time. The population on this trail was probably the same as Manhattan that day. The walk was easy... fighting my desire to dive from every high peak to avoid the massive herds of everyone walking 6 wide at .3 mph... that not so much. While the scenery was awesome, there seemed to be few hikers on this trail. Mainly Facebook selfie photo op people. It really detracted from the experience when you couldn't get more than a dozen consecutive steps before having to dodge an iPhone. And by the way, the Facebook Warriors have absolute zero knowledge or concern for basic trail etiquette. So plan to give everyone the right of way, regardless. As negative as this may sound, again... the terrain is unbelievable. I would def recommend doing it EARLY on a weekday, non-holiday. If you can avoid the UN Convoys that I dealt with all day, you will have an amazing day. Good luck.
