This is a fabulous trail in any season Today's early morning snow shoeing found packed snow at start of trail with much deeper snow as elevation increased. I turned around once I entered the alpine terrain above tree line. There was only one other person on the trail this morning, so I basically had the trail to myself (and my dog).

Today, 10252018, there was extensive snow on the trail just past the switch backs after the junction with the Rosalie trail.

Beautiful and uncrowded. View from the summit is fantastic. Encountered a herd of Mountain Goats at the top. A few sections of the trail to the summit are faintly marked and steep.

Hiked on 8/8/2018. I agree that the trail should be marked moderate. Still some nice flowers around. Skies were hazy due to smoke. Thus, visibility was not as great as it should be. Continued on to the CDT and Jones Pass for a nice round trip. Jones Pass was clear of all snow drifts. I couldn't find a clearly marked route to the CDT so I just picked what appeared to be the least steep route up to the ridge.

Wonderful hike. Used the alternate route starting at the Jones Pass (Butler Gulch) parking area. Same distance as the Berthoud Pass trail head - just a steeper ascent and more forest until you hit tree line. Insanely beautiful wild flowers. No snow or mud. Fantastic views.

Good workout due to steep elevation grade. Well maintained trail. Everyone was courteous-so no issues with bikers. Interesting “castle” ruin at top. I would hike it again - but either earlier in the morning or later in the day since the mid-morning sun is very strong and there is very little shade on the ascent.

Pleasant hike. Friendly hikers. Lots of shade, trees, and varied terrain. Flowing streams were a nice touch. Although there were quite a few parked cars on a Sunday - the trail never seemed too crowded. Not many families, but lots of hikers with dogs.

Snowshoed up to Black Lake. Trail was hard packed most of the way and switched to micro-spikes for return trip - but snowshoes were helpful for the steep parts of trail ascending to the lake. Round trip took about 5.5 hours with a stop for lunch on the frozen lake. Really beautiful with all of the awesome peaks that frame the basin in which the lake sits.

Beautiful winter hike. Trail was packed snow for the first five miles and snow shoes were not needed until after the third stream crossing. I stopped at that point even though I had brought snow shoes with me. Extremely quiet. No one else on the trail for the 4 hours I was hiking.

Great strenuous hike. Very early start (7:45 am) in order to beat the crowds. Light snow falling and cold. Deeper snow higher up the trail. Parts of the trail are wide and other parts are very narrow. The trail is shared with skiers so pay attention - they descend pretty fast and you may have to step off the trail to give them room, especially if you are in a narrow area. If you go on a Saturday or Sunday expect crowds - so try to get an early start. Parking lot was totally full by 11am.

An update to my review from a year ago. - The trail is not closed as of 9/4/2018.
This is one of my favorite trails in the Lost Creek Wilderness. I usually hike it as a loop leaving one car at the Rolling Creek Trail head and the other at Payne Gulch. This can be done as a long day hike or a more relaxed overnight with awesome camping in the meadow of Payne Creek. I've done both. Hardly ever encounter more than just a few people. I like starting at Rolling Creek and then hiking north on the trail.

Matched this trail with the Abyss trail for a wonderful loop. Spectacular views and scenery starting a top of Guanella Pass and hiking down to junction with Abyss trail. Camped at trail junction and exited next day. This would make a great day hike as well. Leave a car at each trail head.
