    Alyssa Beard reviewed Slacks Trail

We hiked a few sections of trails. Stared at White Rock Gap, then onto Slacks Trail, onto Torry Ridge Trail, and finally Blue Trail. This made it a loop back to the camp grounds and was a total of 9.3 miles. The actual Slacks trail was only about 2.6 miles. It was very beautiful and once on the ridge you could see off to either side to other mountains.

Many PCTers know this already but if you are coming off of the south trail, the "continuing" trail to the north has been closed. There are signs at the head of the trail saying 10-12 miles in its closed off due to a fire. Since most folks hiking the pct are going down the road (left out of the south trail) to the dinner about a half a mile they will find out the new entrance to the north trail is about 3-4 miles down the road. Just a heads up for anyone trying to hike this section of the PCT. Happy hiking!

Lovely hike through the hills and canyons. Some of the uphills are pretty steep, more than you would expect! There was a flowing stream which was pretty exciting since San Diego has been struggling with dry weather the last few years. Saw some cattle and was able to enjoy a lovely day out.

This was a very lovely hike for an April stroll, it wasn't too hot and it wasn't too cold which was really nice! However on the way up it was pretty strenuous, it was predominantly uphill the whole way but the trail provided some really nice places to stop and rest. Plus almost the entire trail was shaded! Unfortunately there wasn't an ounce of water to be seen on the trail so make sure you have those bases covered. Since the last few years have been pretty sparse on snow and rain it wasn't a surprise. There were boat loads of lizards and squirrels but didn't see any snakes. A fair warning that this area does have rattle snakes though and great caution should be taken.

As a whole the trail was well kept, a few spots required a little searching for the path but just due to sandstone now showing a good path. The view was really nice too and it wasn't over crowded.

This is a great trail, this was my second attempt at it and didn't want to write a review till I finished. First time we had to turn back because my partner got sick. This time I was bound and determined to get to the peak. Unfortunately this weekend is the last weekend I would recommend going unless you have some serious snow gear such as crampons and possibly backpacking gear. There was a decent amount of ice on the trail which made for slower travel, but it was doable as long as there was softer snow. Towards the peak there was probably 4-5 inches of snow and it made following the trail a little difficult. We were the only people who had gone past Jackstraw Creek camp and had no foot steps to follow so the snow was still pretty fresh. Saw some deer and bear tracks which was pretty cool and got to see a beautiful sunset. Overall this trail kicked my butt, however it was well worth it to get to the peak!

Well Dollar Lake is completely dried up, as are most of the creeks. We found one spring that was still running and there was a creek at the bottom of a very steep drop. Otherwise there is no water source. Besides that the hike was beautiful! Lovely view of de surrounding mountains as you are hiking up, and a lot of changing leaves in early fall! Perfect temperature this time of year and was overall a great hike. There was three people in the group and four dogs. Everyone did great but make sure to bring water since there is hardly any water sources. We clocked the distance at 14 miles round trip. Got there at 10 am and got back to the truck at 5:30 pm but we stopped a lot and weren't in a rush. Just don't forget you need a permit and an adventure pass. No Rangers today but you never know!
