Alm659 . reviewed Upper Whitewater Falls Trail

Seems that the folks that didn’t do the full trail think this is easy least, which it is if you don’t go past the bottom viewing area. However, if you follow the map you go down to the bottom and back up. It goes past the paved part and stairs. Due to the incline coming back, rotted steps, and tree roots and rocks sticking out everywhere this trail does take a while. You canNOT see the waterfall at the bottom. If All Trails wants to leave this as easy and current distance (it is longer than stated) they need to update the trail. It is at least moderate. Literally only 4 groups of people went past the landing like I did. I honestly wouldn’t do that part again. The view from the easy part up top is good.

A castle in KS on a hill to watch the sunrise? Yes, please :) I grew up by the flint hills area so seeing the smoky hills and this castle was a good change. The sun rise view was breathtaking. It was a fall morning in the 30s and we were cold so we didn’t do the trail really. We saw it and I walked some of it. Seemed short but the castle and walking around the area on the hill was good.

When in the area I will definitely return. This is a great trail close-ish to my hometown. The lake was flooded so we didn’t get to do the entire trail; however, what we were able to do convinced me to return sometime. There wasn’t anyone else there on this fall day. We saw lots of birds, a pelican even, tons of deer and great rocks.

Good little stop if you are in the area. The ‘trail’ was clear. The rock formations were interesting and pretty. It is sad that people have defaced them so much though. Only other downside to this is the dated, offensive signage about the park. Some folks have tried to rightfully update it but really it needs professionally redone.

We part of this trail in Aug’18. This is a beautiful walk. We didn’t do the entire thing due to weather but it was well worth getting a bit wet. Definitely recommend it if weather permits. I would go back just to do it again. PS the further you go the fewer tourists...they start to dwindle / turn back...at least when we were there. Make sure you wear the right clothing and shoes as well.

Hiked this a few years back and it was one of the highlights of our trip so now that I am using All Trails I thought I would review it. It wasn’t highly trafficked but can be a pain to get to if rainy due to muddy roads. We had to help push the car in front of us through a muddy area. The views and hike are worth it. While this is rated easy. It is all relative as to what you are used to. This at times is moderate but easy because the trail is well maintained and easy to walk. Weather also plays a role. Look at the map for the incline. I’ve had much easier trails makes as moderate vs this in IL and TN in the US. Nonetheless if you can walk and are in ok shape you can do this. Again...the views are worth venturing here for a few hr hike.

This is a great place to go that isn’t too far from the Chicago city limits. I honestly can’t believe I had never checked it out before. Wingate prairie preserve is a great nature preserve with diverse types of trees, flowers, birds, etc. I even got to see a scurry of chipmunks :). This trail was good overall. I also walked around the lake....as much as I could anyway...it was flooded in spots. There are several other small trails here as well. Overall, it was a great fall nature walk. Just remember to wear the appropriate shoes attire based on the weather. It was quite muddy today in spots but I had my boots on so it wasn’t an issue. I will definitely go back in the spring. Oh, also seems like a great spot for a picnic/gathering. The bathrooms at the visitor center were super clean too.

P.S. This is not a moderate path. It is on the easy side.

Ratings are all relative :) I gave this a 5 as this seems perfect when you think about a trail that is in a city. I’m not from the area so this was the first time I had checked out this area. This particular trail was pretty great. It was diverse in the type of scenery...from river views to rocks to seeing a cave to a pond etc. Definitely an easy path. I only came across a couple groups of people which was nice as well. I went at 6 pm on a Wed night though. I bet it gets crowded on the weekends though. I would go again and frequent often if I lived in Knox.

Ps. You can make this trail a bit longer by veering off the path periodically on the other side trails.

This also is more along the lines of an easy trail vs moderate.

For a hike in a city this is as good as it gets. I wish I had access to something like this in IL. I agree with the person that reviewed this trail the same day as me (10/2/18). I went in the evening and while more people were there most of the trail was quiet...so think they were on other trails or right by the quarry.

I did record my distance and I hit 2 miles but I did double track certain areas going back for pics etc after people would leave so it is definitely less than 2 if you don’t double back.

It has an incline for most of the mountain side of the quarry. Only recommendation is to get there with sufficient time to do the trail at the pace you want before dark. I had to jog in spots to make it through before dark when the gates close :)

Oh and I also wish I had my hiking boots instead of gym tennis shoes, but I didn’t pack them this trip.

If I lived here, I would go here frequently. The pics do not do it justice.

Only walked up to quarry and part way around it as it was greeting dark and I still had to walk back to my hotel (not from the area). The area around the quarry was pretty overall. The walk to the quarry from downtown was nice except the last .3 mile or so as there isn’t a sidewalk.

Went on one of the north loops. It appears to be a decent little park. Small walks so if you want to stop and do a quick walk it is a good spot.

Only did about a third of the trail doing a smaller loop. It is a nice trail overall, we were just cold so headed back. There are signs that alert you to the hunting that is occurring so be sure to read those just for safety. Would check it out again potentially if I was in the area for something else.
