on Vernal Falls

Up the regular way and down through the John Muir trail. Wonderful views all the way.

Easy and well paved path with a view of the waterfall at the end. Rocky area under the waterfall to boulder on.

Awesome views from the top! If you plan on hiking during the summer, start as early as possible.

Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks with you but don’t overload yourself because this is a serious hike where every pound will be felt throughout the hike.

It was not that busy when we started out during a June 14th hike but on the way down we saw LOTS of people coming up during the midday sun.

Bring more water than you think you’re going to need. It was 95 by noon when I made it to the top. I had 5L on me and just about ran out at the top.

INCREDIBLE! Started at 9am at the trailhead, and very thankful we did, as on the way down there were a TON of people heading up. The falls are beautiful even at their low levels. Saw a momma bear and her babies at the top of Vernal Falls beside Emerald Pool, and encountered them 2 more times, once between the falls and a third time at the top of Nevada Falls about 30yds away and they startled me pretty badly! Took the John Muir trail back down which was beautiful. Rested for about 2 hours total at the falls, plus the time to wait for the bears to cross our path the second time and not disturb them, it took us 6 hours total. Strenuous, and I could see it be much harder when there’s a lot of mist, but SO worth it. Will definitely be doing it again!

Wonderful views all the way. Highly recommend taking the John Muir Trail back down to avoid the knee grinding steps of the Mist Trail. We saw some juvenile bears pigging out in one of the treetops.

Beautiful spot! Trail a little hard to follow. Would have had an amazing time had my car not been broken into while I was hiking. Be careful sheriff's said it is a pretty common occurrence.

Easy walk on a paved walkway that ends with an amazing view

This trail is easily one of my top trails to visit again. Just did this trail yesterday and the view was amazing. The hike might be short but man it was tough, but totally worth it. Recommend 5/5 stars!

Good hike, great views from the base of the Falls. The steps are a pain because of the need to focus on each step. It takes away from your ability take in the view on the way up. However, once at the Falls you can take your time and soak it all in.

Like other I recommend the Muir Trail down. You continue to go up in elevation to meet the trail, but the amount of human trafficking (just traffic) on the stairs going down appears like rush hour on the highway. The JMT allows you to feel as though you are still in the wild.

So pretty!! The waterfall is super small in October which is the only time I’ve done it but the fall colors in the leaves make up for it. the views from the top make it 100% worth it!

This one is a beast!!! It is beautiful, but challenging, so don't underestimate it. There are lots of switch backs and there is very little shade when you get to the top, so make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen. Also, be aware that the falls dry up as early as July, so this trail is really better hiked in the Spring. There are a good number of hikers on this trail, but it is not overly packed. Make sure to bring snacks as well since this one is about six miles round trip.

This an absolutely gorgeous waterfall if you come in early spring when it is flowing at it's peak. If you wait until late summer, it will still be flowing, but it is not as impressive. There are always a lot of people on this trail. Many of them stop at the bridge, but do yourself a favor and climb th steps next to the falls. They are uneven and wet, so make sure you have proper shoes on. However, once you reach the top, you get a beautiful view of the falls and can also see Nevada Falls. This trail is paved for a good portion of it, but it is definitely steep and once you do the 300 steps next to the falls, no question you will be feeling it. But if you want to see the falls up close, you can't beat this trail.

Beautiful intro to Yosemite for me! A nice variety of challenges and resting points. Some of the inclines pushed me pretty hard but the rewards to follow (getting to the top of the falls) made everything so worth it. Took us 7.5 hours, including a few well-deserved naps in pretty, sunny places. :)

The view of the falls at the top is worth it! I had been on this trail before but never to the top because of the kids, usually stopped at the bridge. The trail is very busy. There are a lot of uneven stone steps at the top. There are bathrooms and water fountains near the bridge, but no trash cans so pack it in and pack it out (including your banana & orange peels please).

First visit to site. Trail was beautiful; HOWEVER, it was VERY difficult to follow. It would be helpful to have signs/flags (recent rain washed away some trail prints). We had a large group (15) and we had to return down hill; think we went off trail after the pool area. Definitely disappointed. Hiking boots is highly recommended. This trail is NOT moderate; more on the difficult side.

GOOD LUCK and SAFE HIKING!

Great trail! All up hill at first so heading back is easy. There were literally thousands of lady bugs more towards the middle to end parts of the trail. There are plenty of waterfalls to see and it is almost completely shaded. Heading back we ran the trail.

Gorgeous!

Loved this hike!! I would highly recommend going all the way to Nevada Falls and taking John Muir down! A total of 9.4 miles! Beautiful from top to bottom! We saw a huge bear along the path as well! Amazing, solid, strenuous hike worth every step!!

Great hike, but don’t underestimate the challenge. In October the wind shoots up from the Valley and is cold. Short jump up so keep a light pack as every pound counts on the relentless switchbacks. This is a essential hike to add the your Yosemite inventory. Have fun.

Very pretty trail with mixed terrain (lots of rock stairs and some dirt trail). Gorgeous views!

Great day hike. I guess you can walk down or walk up. We walked up. It will challenge you but the beauty and peacefulness it nice. Go hike a mountain.

Very difficult. Steps up are no joke. Take your time but the views at the top of each fall are very good. I recommend going earlier rather than later because the trail gets dry crowded.

Incredible waterfalls. Did this in February and they were flowing like mad.

Beautiful trail, short , not too strenuous and with beautiful views of Bass Lake and lots of great cooling off pools!

Some amazing views, even when the waterfalls were at a low level. We even got super lucky and saw a bear and her two cubs at the top of Vernal falls! There were less people as the trail went on, start early and avoid the crowds at the start.

Fun little trail up to a waterfall. A few other groups on the trail so no worries about the mountain lion. The Lewis Creek trail car park is actually in the middle of the trail on this map. Worth a try if you’re in the area.

Got there in time to see sunrise and was worth getting up early - not many others around!

Awesome - was glad we came back John Muir trail! Crowded at vernal falls but pretty much had trail to ourselves to Nevada Falls. Spectacular views from top!
