Icy

Beautiful views but had to stop about 3 miles in due to the ice. Even pros with crampons were turning around so be careful! Oh and part of the trail is closed due to rock fall

Mist is of course closed right now for winter, so it's out & back on John Muir. If your goal is to get to the falls, YOU NEED CRAMPONS right now. Not tracks, not micro spikes, but real crampons. Switchbacks up to Clarks point are mounts of slick iced over snow angled straight down the hillside. Make good choices! And enjoy the views.

Backpacking

Hiked 2/17 Beautiful day and not too many people when you start early. Trail is fairly well defined at this time, some snow patches at the bottom then after the 1st bridge halfway up the switchbacks its all snow and it’s pretty icy, kindy sketchy without spikes but do able. The falls are flowing and there is some ice buildup on them that looks cool.

Some trails give "great bang for your buck", i.e. great views for little effort. This is not one of those trails. It's hard work with switchbacks and no view for most of the way, till you get close to Vernal Falls. Once there, the views of the waterfalls and North Dome are great - but it's a hard, steep hike - particularly right now, when it's very snowy and icy. DEFINITELY take crampons / microspikes - there's sheet ice in multiple spots.

HikingGreat!

A. This is for adventurers who want to summit but don’t want the super long trek! B. You get elevation, an alpine lake and some gorgeous views of the high sierras. The trail is marked fairly well until you get to climbing the rocks then it’s scrambling and just finding your way, with some guidance along the way. This part was a little strenuous but 100% worth it. Views up here are worth the trek! Take snacks and take your time! We did this late October and the weather was on the cooler side and super windy at the top!

Beautiful but hard hike. Definitely worth it though. We did it in 5 hours total, including numerous breaks especially at the Vernal Falls stairs.

Hiking

Amazing day hike that is not too strenuous -- we went with my parents who are in their 60's with injuries and we were able to complete it in 5 hours (going very slowly). We hiked it after some snow fall but were still able to navigate it with just hiking boots (no microspikes). Absolutely stunning waterfall views and great photo opportunities at Clark Point. One of my favorite hikes in Yosemite.

Difficulty is completely subjective so I'll say this. The trail is asphalt to the bottom of Vernal falls but it is steep enough that I was leaning forward. After that, it's stairs all the way to the top of Vernal Falls. Think stair stepper for 30 minutes. Some ice on top. Supposed to get 12" of snow tonight so after tonight there might be quite a bit more. After Vernal Falls we headed up to Nevada Falls. There was enough ice that we thru on our YakTrax/microspikes and hit the stair stepper again for an additional 30-45 minutes. After Vernal Falls we didn't see any people except 1 really cool Ranger. You could probably make it to the top of Nevada Falls without microspikes but we were happy to have them. On top of Nevada Falls we made lunch and sat up there admiring the view and amazed we were the only people up there. We decended the JMT side and I would not recommend this without spikes. That part of the trail closes in winter and the Ranger told us he might close that side of the trail any day. Maybe after tonight's snow fall. It was amazing to have Nevada Falls all to our selves.

Be prepared to climb many stairs. However, the climb is gorgeous. In mid-November the foliage is beautiful and the waterfall is flowing . We went on a Friday morning in mid-November and it was not crowded.
