This is a destination trail. The primary destination is the lake! If it were not so crowded, I would give it 5 stars. But you can't get there until the snow melts (June/July) and that's when everyones on vacation. Try getting farther into the back-country hikes for quieter backpacking trips and hikes.

In April & May when the falls are in full volume then the hike is a must. Also, in the winter when the falls are iced over, the hike is a must to watch the ice climbers!

This is nice but heavily travelled with A LOT of people. If you can get to the 'Horse Trail' aka John Muir Trail, you can avoid the long lines going up the Mist Trail. These trails are the 'gateway' to Little Yosemite. Once in Little Yosemite, you can head up Half Dome or Cloud's Rest.

Easy with beautiful views. But, there's more! Take the PANORAMA Trail from Glacier Point for even more beautiful views. You will end up spilling out at the horse trail behind Nevada Falls back into Yosemite Valley or you can take the steep Vernal Falls shortcut too then meet the gang who drove you up to Glacier Point back in Yosemite Valley.

Well worth the hike! Once you make it to the top you've got a nice flat area to walk along Yosemite Creek before making a left hand turn to hike to Eagle Peak (Near the summit of El Capitan). A great view of the valley floor and if you walk a little further up the trail you can see the reaction of the rock climbers who make it to the top of El Capitan! Very worthwhile experience! (There's a spring hidden in the granite along the rock slide area of the upper Yosemite Falls trail) Few find it but the water is fantastic!

Did this hike in mid December and it was great- some icy patches along the way at the time but navigable in hiking shoes alone. Beautiful view from the top of the falls!

The whole trail is amazing. This hike has scenic views the entire way up and down which made it special.Priceless!
Whole trip took almost 6 hours round trip, including breaks to strip off clothings layers, lunch, take pics, take a time at the overlook. Things I would recommend bringing, specialy in winter: a good pair of boots and micro-spikes. It gets icy at the top! he last 1.5 miles of the switchbacks are covered in snow and ice.

We did this trail on January 18th. The trail got snowy(up to about 3/4 ft) when you got all the way to the top, but most of it had no snow. The views at the top as well as the entire way up are absolutely breathtaking. Was quite challenging for the average hiker but a million times worth it.

Pretty trail in winter.

Amazing view, totally worth the trip!

We did this hike January 11th and were astonished with how warm it was! We brought MANY layers ready for chilly weather but we ended up stripping down to a single layer of pants and t-shirt! If you start from 7-9AM you are going to be in direct sunlight for the entire trip up with little intervals of shade. With that said, we were so happy to feel the suns warmth (hot!!) because we were coming from freezing Boston weather. This hike had scenic views the entire way up and down which made it really special. The half dome is perfectly visible throughout the first 2 miles of the hike or so. Then the views switch to the falls! Gorgeous. Perfect introduction to Yosemite. Took us about 6 hours because we had breaks of taking off layers.

—WARNING—

The last 1.5 miles of the switchbacks are covered in snow and ice. We brought spikes for our shoes and we cruised along but we saw MANY fall hard. To enjoy the entirety of the hike, definitely buy shoe spikes!

Short and sweet! Easy walk to the bottom of the falls.

This was my favorite hike of all time. The difficult hike up is totally worth it because of the amazing views. Did this hike in the middle of December, and there was only a little bit of ice towards the top.

We went up to Nevada falls via the Mist Trail and then looped back down the John Muir switchbacks. If you like to hike you must do this - it’s beautiful and rewarding. I love this hike. We went when the falls were just thundering and we were soaked so be prepared for that possibility depending on how Vernal falls is running. If you’re in Yosemite and have not done this hike just do it you will not regret it! Spectacular views.

Was quick and easy... nice view!

JM trail was closed so we couldn't do the loop in mid october. Ended up doing out and back on the mist, still a great hike. Definitely one of the more popular trails in the valley, so be prepared for lots of traffic on trail.

We did this hike in mid-December. While cold on the valley floor, we quickly warmed up with both the elevation gain and increased exposure to the sun. Really busy at the base of the hike but thins out as different path options are made available. Beautiful views of the valley and two legendary waterfalls. Great places to stop for lunch or enjoy a beer. Easy to follow, although we weren't able to do the full loop due to trail closures from rockfall risk.

Challenging hike but the views are worth it. I'd definitely like to check it out in the Spring. Trail got pretty busy on the way down so start early.

Awesome trail that is almost completely uphill out and downhill back. This is a do not miss hike when in Yosemite. The views get better and better as you go. Completed it over New Years so it was a little icy on the stairs by the top of the falls but there is a little side route to avoid the ice if you need.

not really a hike but a short walk but worth stopping and checking specially if you have little kids as we do. they loved it. we did it on December and it was impressive. the little creek was frozen adding additiona attractive

Great views! LOTS of hard switchbacks straight up. Take more water than you think you’ll need and trail running shoes are a must. This is definitely the hardest trail I’ve done, also be sure to leave early!

Great trail for an intermediate hiker, day hike trail for sure with plenty of awe inspiring stops. Large stone staircases near the end climbing up to Nevada Falls. Land up by Nevada Falls is also icy and very slippery in late December. Portions of the JMT become closed and impassible during the winter, listen to the signs and don't risk it.

Awesome hike! Do it in spring like me, when the flow is the biggest!

Whole trip took 5 hours round trip, including breaks and lunch at the overlook. Things I would recommend bringing: sunscreen, sunglasses, food/snack, plenty of water, a good pair of boots. Optional gear: micro spikes and binoculars. The whole trail is amazing. At points the sun reflecting off the snow and lack of tree cover can be relatively intense (hence the glasses and cream). It gets icy at the top, but my friend made it all the way in a pair of tennis shoes. 10/10 would recommend to ANYONE

We went as far as the Lower Gate. It was spectacular. The views of the valley, Half Dome, and the falls were totally worthwhile. And the hike was a nice workout.

Parts of the Mist trail are closed, detouring you to John Muir trail. It makes it longer by ~2.5 but completely with it. Great views of upper Yosemite Falls as you hike up John Muir trail

Majestic, grounding, and rewarding hike! Not to busy in the winter but pretty icy at the top. Took 5 hours from start to finish.
