I loved this loop, there was the perfect mix of rock scrambles and easy trail hikes that I never got tired. Beautiful things to see and for going on a Sunday afternoon it really wasn't too crowded. Great hike!

it is more of a walk. when sunny, it is very crowded.

Well worth the extra hike to the bottom of the falls

Easy hike going down. Pretty steep coming up.

After heading down the trail (which, due to being a bit steep at times, was a little rough on the knees ... but otherwise enjoyable) we took time to sit and listen to the cascading waterfall at the bottom of the trail. (Along with about a billion other people ... okay, not really that many, but when you're trying to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature ... it kinda looked and sounded like it.

My Wolfpack and I conquered this trail... The river runs down beside the trail the entire way to the waterfall, are you strong enough to join my Wolfpack?

Absolutely beautiful hike and location. This was my first hike in Virginia and it did not disappoint

I did not go full length of trail, but the first third is mostly fairly level with only mild grades. My out-of-shape husband did fine. :) Occasional short stretches where trail very rocky but otherwise pretty good footing. Be aware the trail crosses the North River - bring water shoes or prepare to get wet!
Entire trail in the woods, about 1/3 in dense growth (like walking through a tunnel), rest open enough that you can see around you.
A little tricky to find the trail head, and parking is not necessarily at the trail head - we had to walk up the road a bit to get to it.
Trail shared with bikers and horses so stay alert.

In every season this trail is absolutely stunning. I enjoy this trail the most during Autumn season.

Our hike was cut short because of the ever fickle recent August weather. I still managed to enjoy and take beautiful photos though. My friend who goes to VTech recommended this place and I was sold immediately after I saw the photos she took this past winter season. Will definitely come back to finish the hike and see the frozen falls next year.

This is a pretty trail. I walked this trail with my parents, starting at the visitor’s center and taking woodstock pond trail south, then to the turn north again towards fossil beach, which is called mattaponi trail. It’s a fairly easy walk, perfect for families. Very little change in elevation. In total we walked roughly 2 miles in an hour and a half. After heavy rain last night, there were small puddles, but nothing that is impossible to avoid. Fossil beach is beautiful, we saw a butterfly santuary with a dozen+ butterflies. It was very lightly trafficked, but then again, it was a monday.

A really great hike. We went after a rain storm, and the waterfall was flowing heavy. We were fortunate to have the place to ourselves for a good half hour, it’s very serene as you’re sort of in your own cove beneath the falls. Would definitely do this hike again.

A great hike with several options to lengthen it if wanted. Hanging Rock Trail makes it all worth it.

I went through on a Monday morning around 6:30 am. No one around until I was on my way out. Nice loop. Beautiful scenery and sounds of the falls.

Awesome waterfalls. Easy trails.

well traveled hike. a lot of foot traffic. easy down. moderate up.

This is such a beautiful hike. Its fun going down it and it only takes like 15-20mins but once you’re ready to head back up its a bit of a climb. However it is really beautiful. The water fall goes all the way to the bottom right before the Rose River trail starts. Its a must see.

This is a super fantastic hike

Great hike with a slow incline over about a mile. Well maintained trail. The last view (Erwin’s view) is probably the best view of them all and is a distant view. If you can only get to the first overlook...you will still get a decent view.

Nice hike. Cool streams along most of it. Beautiful waterfall at the end.

The falls are lovely but this is a highly trafficked trail and many people go down this trail to see the falls and struggle hard to get back up. It won’t be a problem If you’re in good shape/hike a lot and it is definitely worth seeing. If you are taking small children, older family members or injured hikers with you, consider going to the lower falls via the horse trail. It is much easier with a pretty flat trail in and out. The lower falls are quite as spectacular but still pretty and much easier to access.

Love the short strenuous like hike to a beautiful overlook!! The dog did really well too! Bring water!

A great and quiet place for a day hike. It is a diverse place to hike with hills, straightaways, stream crossings, all located on the overgrown remains of a historical homestead.

Very popular trail. Pretty short, I did it in an hour and a half. Good for beginners in good health. The water was very pretty all the way down and there was even a small pool of water at the bottom that you could swim in. Long drive to get to the trail head but there are several other trails to fill in the rest of your day.

The trails that pass through the Visitors Center, across the bridge, and up a mild incline include the Upper Falls View (where you are within a few feet of where the river flows down through the rocks before plunging over the falls), Chimney View (which is directly across from the Plunge Basin Overlook), Gorge View, and Erwin's View. All offer great views but Erwin's View has the best view straight into the falls although the most distant. I consider this hike to be easy for all ages and the viewing areas are all stone walled in and safe. If you follow this trail, take in all of the viewing areas and don't stop at the Upper Falls as the red line on the map suggests.

Awesome trail one of the best in the Fredericksburg area. Lots of different terrain and wildlife. Would be great for mountain biking. Long enough to give you a great work out yet easy enough to keep it fun.

Nice trail. It was the only trail we hiked with a packed parking lot. We did this trail after a morning on Marys Rock. The view of the falls from the bottom is really nice (with people everywhere). The trek back up was fine, even after a fall from the day before.

Love the rock scrambles. Easy enough for novice hikers that are relatively active, as well as our small dog. Started on the river trail which had the most of the scrambles, then to the ridge trail, then swamp. I think we were on the Difficult Run Trail as well at some point.

We went on the trail after a thunderstorm had come through. Waterfalls were muddy but spectacular to see. Not all of this loop was easy. The mountain ascent was steep for this lady who’s just starting to do longer hikes.

The first part of the trail is nice to see all of the Tubers having fun. MAKE SURE that you all take the right after the bridge to the LOOP trail and DONT go left to the Deep Creek Trail or you will hike for miles!!!!! We ended up going at least 10 extra miles!
