Thanks to an unusual delay in winter storms, we got to enjoy this hike in mid-November. Although it is late in the hiking season, we still saw a number of other hikers on the trail. We knew Lake Aloha would be drained, but other lakes on the way still provided beautiful scenic views, Lake of the Woods in particular. To see this one, you’ll have to add a small loop with a steep climb, but it’s worth it!

As far as the hike itself, it was not terribly difficult. I didn’t enjoy hiking on the scree, but it is par for the course in Desolation Wilderness. The trail is well marked; just keep an eye out for the wooden posts marking various converging and crossing trails. Some people had their dogs, but I was glad I left mine at home since it is primarily an exposed, rocky path.

All in all, a great hike that I look forward to doing again in the summer!

Enjoyed a beautiful day on this trail, unusually warm and sunny for mid November. A fair number of people were out today, but most that we encountered were within a mile or two of the trailhead. Lake Aloha is drained at the end of the season, so we missed out on experiencing it in its full glory, but the other lakes did not disappoint. Lake of the Woods is worth the uphill climb you’ll encounter after you visit, so I recommend adding a loop on to see it.

Beautiful and scenic hike

Quick easy hike. Pretty little water fall. took us longer to drive from reno then it did to actually do the hike.

Nice, slow climb for about an hour. It’s not too challenging, but it makes you breathe hard. Well maintained trail and beautiful views of the lake and South Shore. Mountain bikers flying down the hill are dangerous and a nuisance what with the dogs on the trail. Be prepared to pull your dog off the trail in a heartbeat. It’s not exactly relaxing.

This was such a wonderful easy hike. Great for families with kids. Our 8 year old did it with a little help on the way back.

Beautiful views of Lake Tahoe. A nice waterfall with ice on the edges of the stream. Not a lot of wildlife. Annoying mountain bikers for whom you have to step off the trail. It seemed possible to take the Tahoe Rim Trail south to the Gondola and then ride it down, but we didn't attempt it.

Beautiful weather! I trail ran/hiked this peak in 3 hours. Ran the flat non-rocky parts and hiked the steepest parts. This is a well marked trail and there were a lot of people (and dogs) on the trail. The waterfall was partially frozen as were some of the little stream crossings. There was patching snow on the trail above the tree line just before I reached the summit. It was easily avoidable and didn’t bother me at all in my running shoes. Didn’t see a summit box, but there was a USGS summit marker on a large rock. Great trail. Would do this one again. November 17, 2018.

What a beautiful hike in the fall.
Moderate is a pretty accurate rating given the length and terrain. Not hard even for my out of shape butt but definitely going to feel it tomorrow.
I mapped just under 6 miles from the parking lot round trip. Please keep that in mind when heading out.
had a few people ask me if they were almost to the falls when they were about a mile in.
Cant wait to go in the Spring!

Pretty walk. There are a few homeless people about. But it is what it is! Most of the time they are minding their own business. Still a pretty walk !

We have done this hike several times and had a great experience today! Learned a few new things, namely how to cross the creek without getting wet! I have heard about an alternate crossing and finally found it today, excellent day as the rocks at the inital crossing were covered in ice.

From the paved parking lot at the top of the access road down to the creek, take the single track trail to the left that skirts the hillside and follow it instead of going down the gravel road. There will be several paths down to the river from this single track including a set of steps down to a thick log crossing the river. This would be stable enough bit we chose to keep following the trail up a bit to a small, white water tower with a metal grate bridge across. This was completely stable and safe for us today and I recommend choosing either this bridge or the log for a safer initial crossing. Thanks to the hiker that told us about this!

The other crossing that has always been problematic for me was the dam just below the waterfall. Apparently, I am the only person who did not know there is a huge log to cross just below the dam! This would have saved me a lot of wet shoes! Just in case this is a problem for others too: off the main trail, just below the dam and waterfall is another well-worn trail to the left that goes down to a huge, stable log that makes for easy creek crossing.

Hope this review helps and many others can enjoy and care for this beautiful area! The waterfall was icy and spectacular today!

We only did the first 1.5 and it was very steep. Bring water for you and your pets! No views in that section of the trail.

Great hike with beautiful scenery

Nice easy to moderate hike with lovely views. A little busy on a Sunday but it was also a holiday weekend. Try to go early! No smoke from fires when we went today (11/11/2018)

Loved this trail, went during the off season and was able to have the trail to ourselves. Easy walk, beautiful views. Took us 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to the furthest lake and around 3 hours (with side hikes) to complete. You can get this trail done in 2 hours if you go straight there and back.

I walk slowly and totally spend 3 1/2 hours. The view is really amazing. Only one thing bother me is- crossing the river. Water still is so much. My shoes get wet. On my way back, I try to take off my shoes/socks and cross by my bare foots. The water is freezing cold! ! however, it is still a great experience.

wow robert york sounds like a real dbag.

Beautiful views! Bit of an incline at the beginning, but the trail levels out. My feet were feeling the hike at the end. The waterfall was lovely.

great loop

Nice casual walk. Awesome panoramic view of the lake.

Overall a short and pretty easy hike with some rocky spots towards the end. Would love to go in Spring to get a chance to see the waterfall after the creek gets some snowmelt. The creek is peaceful right now, and there’s lots of space to take in the view. Beautiful views of the lakes and granite rock formations!

Time this trail accordingly as it will be covered in snow during winter/spring. This is my go to place for hiking. Its a nice hike with shaded trees. There is a nice resting spot next to a waterfall. The views are stunning looking over Reno and of course Lake Tahoe. Recommend doing this hike in light summer/fall for the best weather.

Great hike with great views. The last mile is a bit of a climb but well worth it.
