Such a fantastic hike. It was tough, but felt so satisfying to reach the bottom and look back at what we had just completed. Beautiful views and an overall wonderful way to spend the day.

Great!

Nice hike!! Views of the actual rocks are best from the parking lot, but great views of the valley down below at the observation point at the top.

The best views are from the visitor’s center. As per prior reviews, a part of the trail is flooded and closed so its an out and back hike. The part of the hike that is open has interesting educational signage that makes the short steep hike worth a wander.

I’ve been doing this trail once every few years since I went college in WV. Well maintained and safe trail. It is all uphill so be prepared. There are several benches and rest areas along the path of you need a break. The view from the top never gets old and never disappoints. It is generally pretty busy but there is plenty of room for hikers to pass coming back down.

You have to see this in person to believe it. Neither written description, video or photos will adequately do it justice.

It did not disappoint. It is heavily trafficked, but the views from the top are worth it. Great views of Seneca Creek and the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac at the start.

It’s a hike to the observation platform at Seneca Rocks....and it really doesn’t get much better than this.

HikingGreat!Icy

We came on a warmer day thinking all the snow would be melted. NOPE. Bring a pair of sturdy shoes just in case. I wore only my tennis shoes and slid the whole trail coming down. Beautiful view and definitely worth it the trek. Coming back again in warmer weather.

Steady incline to the top observatory deck. It was a bit icy in some parts so make sure to bring some sturdy boots.

Hiking

Hiked 1/27/21. Very simple, easy to moderate climb to the observation deck, which has sweeping and stunning views of the valley and mountains in the distance. Only one other car in the lot when we arrived. I ventured a little further out on the rocks past the “STOP” sign but quickly chickened out as it was very windy and narrow! That portion is not for the faint of heart. We explored around at the top and found the second half of the loop, and confirmed it’s very steep and overgrown. We are pretty used to those types of trails (PA hikers) but opted to go back down the easy way just to be safe. Nice, well-maintained trail and beautiful park grounds. Visitors center is closed but bathrooms are available and the general store across the way is open as well (we stopped for a cup of coffee afterwards since we were frozen!) Our dog had a blast!

Definitely a unique rock formation. I’d recommend it for that alone.

Great trail. Steady incline to top, which is not overly difficult due to switch backs. Trail is wide and dirt or gravel. Beautiful views at top especially if you go out on the rocks.

Stunning, perhaps unique scenery. A really nice hike. The views over the valley from the overlook are spectacular. On the day I hiked this, it had rained for a couple of hours before I started out, and the patches of mist and cloud rising across the valley added to the drama of the scenery. As mapped here, the ascent is on Seneca Rocks Trail, with the descent on East Face Trail. Seneca Rocks Trail is very well maintained; actually a little "over-maintained" for my taste; it resembles a trail in a city park. There are multiple switchbacks which reduce the gradient considerably. There is a sign at the bottom saying 1 mile to the overlook; this is a little of an underestimate, and bear in mind there is about 800 feet of elevation gain. The descent on East Face Trail is a different beast entirely. This is a steep, technical trail which is not maintained at the same level. Trekking poles are highly recommended. Beginner and some moderate level hikers may prefer to return back via Seneca Rocks Trail. That said, the views from East Face Trail are unparalleled; you will not get a closer view of Seneca Rocks than this. The creek alongside Roy Gap Road is very pretty and this takes you through the gap between the two portions of Seneca Rocks visible from the parking lot at the visitors center. Note that on the day I climbed, the bridge over North Fork on Roy Gap Road (almost at the parking lot) was out (I don't know if this was due to high water, or if it's permanent, but it was impassible), so you need to turn right from Roy Gap Road, crossing the smaller creek and following the signs back to Seneca Rocks Trail. There you will reconnect with the beginning of the loop and take a left to return to the parking lot.

Walking

Took us twenty years, but worth the wait. For some reason, we've never hiked this classic trail. Took a late afternoon hike on Jan 3rd. Great way to start off the new year. The area had just received maybe an inch of rain but we were impressed with the quality of the trail. The information provided via the nature signs along the trail is a cut above the usual 101 stuff. We saw about twenty people on our hike and about half wore or pulled their masks up as we approached. A good hike was had by all.

This was a really fun hike! Weather was cloudy and in the upper 40’s. Trail had a good amount of people on it, was a little challenging but nothing bad at all. Trail was very well maintained and the views were incredible!! No service anywhere near this trail.

A good afternoon walk with our 4-year old. The trail was clear with good views from the top. There were a fair amount of people out and about today, about 2/3 of whom were also wearing masks.
