From McCarthy we got a ride in back of locals pick-up truck and torn to pieces by the overgrown willows along the road to Kennicott Mine, thanks for the lift! Great well preserved copper mine with photo opportunities. From there it is up, up and away. Away from anyone not capable or prepared. Absolutely incredible views of Parks snow covered peaks at your back while stopping along the way up with creek and falls for water and catching your breath. Bonanza is very top of trail with a little scree and scramble to finish. Nice mostly untouched copper mine and gorgeous rock colors and formations. A couple small, level spots for tents on main trail below the mine with endless views of northern lights depending on time of year. No shade up high and lots of bugs down low.

You will remember this hike FOREVER!!! First thing to keep in mind- this trail starts from the town of Kennicott, which can only be reached by shuttle, OR a 5 mile uphill walk to town. The shuttle only runs during the summer season - we were fortunate to use it on its last weekend of the year (sept 11.) So if you don’t use the shuttle, add 5 miles to the hike. It seemed like a pretty boring walk so honestly I would only recommend this trail like June-September. Anyway, the trail itself is pretty moderate. Would probably avoid taking kids but anyone in decent shape should not have trouble! The pinnacle of the hike is when you reach the glacier and get to walk out on it! We were only in hiking boots and still managed without slipping...just be very careful. You will want your camera for this one! Have so much fun!

Completed 9/16/20. The shuttle from McCarthy to Kennecott was actually closed so we walked the 5 mile road up to the trailhead. The trail is beautiful and well maintained. Well marked to direct you straight into the glacier where you can explore at your own risk. Took the crampons and ventured about a half mile on the glacier. Fun trail and history all around.

shuttle wasn’t running, so we walked from McCarthy to trailhead. You get to see raw Alaska. Small town, remote living. The trail itself is not difficult;, and the view of the glacier is pretty amazing.

Great trail, pretty easy. Definitely the trail to do if you are running short on time at the park. When it opens up to view the glacier, the rocks are so cool (super colorful). You can tell how much time they put into this trail.

Decent trail, really short and easy—not much of a view at the end though

Beautiful hike, and managed to get through it with a running stroller with a toddler.

HikingGreat!

Great Trail with ample space to pull over and allow for social distancing. At the end the route is one way to ensure better social distancing as well. There is no route per say on the Glacier but the left side seems to be easier walking while the right side had more interesting scenes to photograph. We went up the right side about 2 mi and looped back down the right side, was a great day!

First to Review

The trail was more moderate than easy. I would have been much happier to be wearing my hiking boots than just sneakers. parts of it were quite muddy with the silty mud that really sticks to your shoes. parts of it were a rocky scramble up and down steep ravines. there was a good view of the glacier at the very end.

Hiked up from Root Glacier Trail and made it about halfway (2000 feet elevation gain). Not an experienced hiker, so tapped out when the snow became thick and slippery. The trail is rocky with streams from the melting snow so muddy at times, but very clear where to go and easy to follow.

Loved this trail! Beautiful hike- tough but rewarding. A word of caution; the shuttle service from McCarthy to Kennecott no longer allows dogs. The only way to the trail head is via a 5 mile flat road from McCarthy. You can hope to catch a ride from one of the few locals hitch hiking but the road is generally used by the shuttle service/hotel shuttles who won’t pick you up with a dog. Just something to keep in mind and add to your day if you plan on doing this hike and don’t hitch a ride!

it's a long and moderate hike. At a few point it's hard but not much. it's has scenic view of the valley, you can see the McCarthy footbridge and McCarthy road, that means the valley. it's has a nice elevation gain so you will find it rewarding too.

Strenuous towards the end with loose rock/ boulders and some washed out areas of trail. Worth it once the mine is reached. Amazing hike !!
