I love this trail. You depend a lot on the weather though. The scenery is beautiful and the trails are in very good shape.

Lots of steps. Narrow path so lots of stopping to let people pass

Best trail system around, hands down.

First time in Government Canyon Park. Due to the current heavy rain, most of the park was barracaded and not accessible. ..but I did get to hike about 5 miles (including the Discovery Trail) today. Very nice, easy hike. Proper footwear is essential -very rocky terrain. I'm looking forward to hiking every trail in this park! Quite impressed so far. ..will be posting as I go. ..

Go away! Best 'hard' hike in Austin. If you include panther hollow trail (Big View entrance) it is 3 mi each direction. 1700+ altitude change with 2736+ stairsteps through a shaded ravine following a creek along lower area. Do your share by carrying out a bit more trash than you came with a smile.

The trail is very well kept and marked. We went on a Saturday so it was very crowded. Lots of dogs and most were not on leashes. The trail is pretty narrow the whole way so we spent a lot of time stepping off the trail to allow runners to go by. The creeks were high due to the rain but the trail had chain to help you walk across the rocks without slipping. Definitely a hard trail with lots of steps. Great workout and beautiful scenery

Great trail for a good workout. Some good elevation changes, beautiful area, and not too crowded (so far).
Folks with dogs need to not only pick up after them but carry the waste to the disposal locations ... of course this is true throughout Austin area.

Fun hike!

Fun hike!

enjoy the trail

This was my 3rd ever real trail to do. It was a blast but heed warning if your not a stairs person LOL. Took me 2:09 to finish, my group was proud I did finish!

Skill level: novice fat guy, hahaha

To all of the hikers who think this trail would be better without all of the mountain bikers, this trail wouldn't exist if not for the bikers. DORBA (Dallas Off Road Bike Association) created and maintains the trail. Thank the bikers as they pass you for providing such a gem in the DFW metroplex.

This is my new go-to trail with my dog. Free to get in during the day at the Murrell Park entrance. I would consider this a mountain biking trail that allows hikers. Lots of bikes! Make sure you don’t have headphones in so you can hear the bikers coming up behind you. Everyone has been very friendly when passing and let you know how many are behind them and when it’s clear to keep walking. Definitely worth exploring!
The trail is narrow and one way with spots to turn around if you don’t want to do the whole loop.

Great trail, will definitely be back. Happened upon this one because the first trail we went to was closed. Bike traffic, but nothing bad, all bikers were courteous. Walked about 7 miles of the trails today, will more than likely go back next weekend and do a different portion.

Great trail. I ran 4 miles and it was pretty tough. Be ready to put in some work if you are trail running

The hike is worth seeing the falls. Like the description says it's gets a bit tough at the end, but most of the trail is flat and in the sun. There are bits of shade under patches of cedars, but it is mostly sun. There are not any picnic tables but there is a nice platform with bench seating. Bring lots of water, snacks, and good shoes. You cannot access the falls, but the Colorado River is very near. It is a bit strap and muddy to get down to though. Looking forward to my next opportunity to hike again!

Great trails, not difficult but still had elevation. Beautiful scenery all around!!

about 3 hours round trip hike along the creek there are steps, but not steep. Will do it again for exercise.

Beautiful trail with a lot of stimulus to keep your mind busy when running. There are parts that are very difficult and steep and it can be slippery when muddy. Heavily trafficked on the weekends

This hike is difficult but rewarding. Some choose to hike the trail clockwise which takes them down Juniper Canyon trail the first day. I would advise this, as I have done the trail counter clockwise and day 3 up Juniper Canyon can be extremely strenuous. Personally the second day down the Dodson was the most difficult. We made out hike in early spring but the lack of shade and the extreme temperature swing in the afternoon really made the last half of the day MISERABLE. This was all replaced after the camp was set up and the stars came out. Hands down the clearest I have ever seen the stars in my life.

I would recommend caching water at Homer Wilson and Juniper Canyon. We ended up with extra water in the end but as many of you know the weather in Big Bend can fluctuate rapidly. Weather forecast for the day we hiked the Dodson called for highs in the low 80's but it was easily 100 degrees in the afternoon. So a little extra water isn't going to hurt. It actually makes for a pretty refreshing cool down before the final stretch back down into the basin.

This trail is very rewarding with spectacular views and solitude but can be very dangerous if you go in unprepared. Carry plenty of water, and KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS!

Not too bad but very crowded. Lots of stopping to let runners go by, lots of dogs off leash, lots of poop bags marking the trail. But a hike that gets the heart pumping and if you’re not getting run over by a runner, lots of pretty sights to see.

Awesome 11mile Long Run on this trail, felt great.

Good trail but not a lot of scenery. Toughest Austin area trail I’ve completed.

Awesome place to get a glimpse of what the woods can bring. Peace and quiet. Love the trails and scenery. Be on the watch out for the bikers!

Nice and hard. Not 5 stars because the natural slope would be better than stairs.

I am giving just one star because the park was closed and I couldn't get in due some construction on site (for the better, I am sure). I will try it agan, that is for sure!

Unfortunately, no falls or water here in the heat of the Austin summer. Still, a great and challenging hike. Pretty comparable, on %incline, to Hill of Life, which we did yesterday. Time for some time by the pool!!

Awesome trail, about 2746 stairs one way and a good workout. Good elevation variation with lots of trees. It’s not the best trail for summer as in Texas heat you would get thrashed! Make sure you take lots of water and good shoes.
