Several small creeks to cross, and beautiful vistas as you climb to the top. The frozen lakes are amazing. The view at the top was incredible! This time of year, a lifted vehicle with chains highly recommended.

The views from this hike were spectacular but I will echo what others have said: it was steep! So be prepared for that and snowshoes or spikes are required. The trail to the lake branches off from the service road soon after the first tower, however if you go up to the second tour you will be rewarding with sweeping views of the back country.

off road driving

this is more of a road rating went up there just to drive more snow on the ground than expected but still had loads of fun highly recomend a lifted vehicle to get through all the way and dont go alone

The elevation kicked my tail, but this was absolutely amazing! About one foot of beautiful fresh powder! We sled down on saucers, so fun!

Great snowshoe which gains elevation right off the bat. Switchbacks for awhile and then you get toward the lake and it becomes more of a trail which levels off, versus a road. A little busy but to be expected at the pass. 1-90 got shut down so we couldn’t do our original plan. This was a good, quick backup on the way to Leavenworth. Completed on 1/4/19.

MUST DO.

From the East Coast (specifically New Jersey) and this was our first West Coast hike. Wow, wow, wow. The views were insane, the flora was gorgeous, and the temperature was perfect in August! This review is written late, but if you can make the trip, DO IT!

Really beautiful hike. Views overlooking the cascades on the way up were stunning seeing the snow capped mountains in the distance with fog/clouds rolling into the valley and high cloud cover above. Heavy snow heaving on the alpine firs, and untouched powder bounding off into the trees. View from the top was pretty, and the snow covered lake was fun for my son (12) to imagine what was below. Only drawback were two- is despite the short length - the elevation gain is tricky and my son had to stop several times. The top of the mountain has a T-Mobile cell tower which was a little disheartening to have it spoil the “Untouched” feel. But my son was happy he had “4 bars Dad!”

I snowshoed this trail today (12/31) it has great views & the trailhead was easy to find from Steven’s Pass parking lots. It was quite crowded but still made for a great short snowshoeing trip.

Trail is old logging road at first then trail then a hard climb on rock .... worth the climb for fossils ....

Hiked 10/27. missed the beautiful larch colors, but was still an amazing hike. Breathtaking views. Note....drove past trailhead was looking for NF-600. thinking it would be marked as such. It is actually at the Rainy Pass rest stop area.

Hiked 11/17 wonderful relatively easy hike with big payoff views. Many hikers were not prepared with traction. mini/micro spikes were needed as most of the trail was iced over. trail head easy off hwy. vault toilet.

Beautiful in the fall when the mountains are covered in snow. Not too much elevation change and you get big views for a moderate amount of effort. Definitely heavily trafficked on the weekend though!

Worth the trek up forest roads. Amazing trail to hike up and run down

This is a great hike. I went yesterday with my husband, our 7 year old and 3 year old and a couple friends. The drive up is pretty rough for about 5-6 miles. You will need a vehicle with good ground clearance or take the drive up very slow. The trail was very Icey in some parts. We ended up busting our butts on the trail a couple times. If you are taking a little one this time of year, I recommend putting them in a hiking carrier. Beautiful views from the trail and definitely an incline on the way up. We were feeling the burn. Snow and ice on parts of the trail and at the top. The view of Summit Lake was beautiful. The lake is so clear. The hike was worth it just to see the scenic view from the overlook and to see the lake. It was breathtaking. This wasn't a very busy trail. We saw only a couple people during our hike an this was during the morning to afternoon.

High clearance and decent tires are your safest bet getting to the TH, I made it in my Chevy Cruze though, so make good judgment calls before heading to this trail. Beautiful day on the trail and amazing views at the lake and above! Compact snow is very icy!

absolutely amazing hike, especially beautiful in the fall.

So beautiful especially when the larch trees are in all their autumn glory. I hiked this 10/24 and the larches were in full effect. I hiked counterclockwise and I was very happy with the decision. It was a busy trail even on a Wednesday so I would suggest off peak times if possible.

Absolutely stunning view. Went in the middle of November. It was chilly and icy. But soo worth it! My favorite so far

Hiked from Heather Meadows - lots of snow but still totally worthwhile and doable (note that there were lots of tracks from groups prior, so we never had difficulty trying to find the trail). Would recommend getting up there if the weather is nice, otherwise look forward to the flowers in 2019.

Snow!! What a gorgeous day for a gorgeous hike!! The trail head is not marked at all (just a little green marking ribbon on a tree) but the coordinates took me straight to it. Go to the left when you first get on the trail (downloading the map helped). Moderate incline at first but it mellows out. Absolutely stunning views up top. Only saw one other person on the trail near the top and they were just as stunned to see me as I was them.

Completed 11/10 - although snow was on trail from the beginning, it was still very well maintained the whole way! Wore hiking boots and runners and both were fine but traction would have been great.
Frozen, snowy lake, no larch color left, but was beautiful blue bird day! Will return, but preferably larch season.

I have hiked this trail twice before but hiked it again today on November 3rd. I went 3.5 miles and then turned back, but could have gone further given the snow. It was snowing but very lightly. People I passed said you could go further than I went—one said just one grade away from the pass. Don’t let the snow stop you on this one even if you can’t do the full loop. You can still do quite a bit and it’s still beautiful!

Note: I always go counter-clockwise.

Also, there were less than 10 groups hiking today.

I am a beginner and it was my second hike. I went there on Saturday around 12pm and returned at 7:15pm. It was hard for me but I enjoyed a lot. I would suggest not to add 0.7 mile for Ann lake because there is nothing to see, rather you will get nice view form the top.

If you are beginner then it’s really hard for you, as per my experience.

This trail is incredibly beautiful, even when it’s foggy. We didn’t have much visibility due to the weather, but it was so gorgeous with the fog and fall colors. Go before the road closes for winter, but beware of ice. We got to see the larches, and the whole trail was lovely.

A clear October day and all the fall colors makes this trail one of the most gorgeous hiking experiences. If I were going to try to get a beginner hooked on hiking I'd start them here! The scenery payoff is huge for such a moderate hike. We started from the upper lot, but I'd recommend starting at the lower lot. It has a lake and picnic tables. A perfect spot to finish up!

Absolutely beautiful! We hiked this trail on October 16, 2018. The larch trees along with the fall colors had us using the words beautiful, amazing, breathtaking several times. We went clockwise (steeper on the way up) this made for a much easier time on the knees for the trip down. We plan to make another trip next spring!
