Cool short hike. The only problem is since it’s so short, it’s very popular so you can’t really hike your speed because of the crowd.

Not very much shade, but an amazing view at the top with the railway ruins! Bring yo’ sunscreen.

Great hike with good LA history at the top. It’s all up hill with very little shade so plan accordingly with water and a hat. Also it’s street parking and it can get busy. Dog friendly

Only 2.5 miles up to the peak if you just want a good view (5mi round trip).

Great trail. Good for dogs. Probably not kids, though. Very steep in places.

Overall, an easy hike through the sequoias to the stair climb. Beautiful views of the valley all through out the trail and tons of wild life. The stair climb can be difficult but their are plenty of places to stop and break and enjoy the views before reaching the insane panoramic views at the top. Get their early before it gets busy to truly appreciate it :)

Amazing view.

Nice but a lot of up and down and much of it is heavily trafficked.

Distance:
5 miles to Echo Mountain (2.5 up and 2.5 down)
10 miles to Inspiration Point (5 miles and 5 miles down)

Hike through some unique LA history as you churn those legs upward to the Echo Mountain resort ruins. The trail has constant elevation and is a really solid workout. Once you get to the ruins (2.5 miles), take a break, explore the remains, and eat your lunch or snacks here. It is quite enjoyable yelling into the echo phone and hearing your voice reverberate through the mountains - it really carries through clearly!

Now if you want to make this hike special, I HIGHLY recommend going from the ruins and trekking all the way up to Inspiration Point via the Sam Merrill trail or the Castle Canyon (both these entrances are marked with plaques that look identical). This is where the trail gets more isolated, rugged, narrow, and is much steeper! The Sam Merrill trail once you get towards the top, brings you through the backside of mountain where you venture into the shaded wilderness of the woods - really loved this change in the landscape. The Castle Canyon trail ascends up much faster and steeper than its counterpart and is a major workout where you will be huffing and puffing until you get to the top. Be aware of potential mountain bikers trekking down these trails, I was pretty shocked to have 3 of them go by us as the trails were narrow, quite impressive honestly. Once at Inspiration point, soak in the views and lay down before heading back to the trailhead. They have these cool, hollow telescope tubes that are labeled by LA's neighborhoods (silverlake, venice, etc). These aren't actual telescopes but if you had one this would be the perfect time to use it. There are also a good amount of hawks or ravens up here so make sure to gaze and be amazed as they soar around you, I even saw one doing some tricks in the air!

A beautiful mountain hike that is not too far from the city!

Parking: There is free parking at the base of the trailhead.

allegaste a otro planeta..

Was excited to do this hike and it was definitely different considering the scenery and that you are right along the stream. But that being said, we didn’t make it to the punch bowl. The arrows were less clear at the end and we were with our pup and the rocks were getting bigger and it had become more dangerous than was comfortable for us. It sounds like there are multiple ways to get to the end - we tried to stick to the red line on the All Trails app Esther than the dotted line. Thinking the dotted line could have actually gotten you there and been easier than the red line, which was right along the creek. The dotted line seemed to be out in the hot sun, which some people were referencing in their reviews. We likely won’t do it again but if we did, we would go the dotted trail route. Would be cool if someone else could confirm that for others using the app!

It's got some sketchy parts so be careful. Kinda steep

Very nice hiking! Beautiful view

Loved this trail!

very nice view.

So beautiful!!!

This was an interesting hike. We were headed for the falls but seemed to have taken a wrong turn. The trail is very off and on. It seems to have been washed out starting around the 2.5 mile mark and then continues off an on if you can find where it picks up again. If you make it to the metal sign with arrows pointing up to maple camp and upper matilija make sure you stay to the right as there are two canyons and water flowing down each. We went left and eventually stopped after no signs of trails or upper matilija, go right. Poison oak and the rattlesnakes are out there as well.

Great with lots of elevation. Most of the elevation is in the beginning half mile and the last half mile near the summit.

Just did this trail Oct 14 and really enjoyed it! I loved the scenery, there's some creek side walking, which to still have some water this time of year is great. The elevation gain in minimal, so taking kids is no problem and plenty for them to explore. At the first camp, the creek is right there with a nice little waterhole. I'm sure in the late Spring/ early Summer the water is really great to dip into, even now it reached the knees, just enough to cool off. There are certain spots where the trail gets washed out, but as long as you keep walking parallel to the creek you're good, it would actually be hard to get lost. Of course the Thomas Fire came through the area, but it's regrowth is amazing to see and you can imagine what it once looked like. Towards the 2+ mile area, there is less shaded area, so plan accordingly.

I really enjoyed this hike, the ascent is gradual, the trail is wide enough, and the vistas are amazing.

Holy crap this hike was awesome! The lottery system keeps crowds down to 20 people per day, which you really appreciate when you arrive.

Awesome trail until I decided to take a different one back. Awesome caves and great elevation

Great hike! Not sure why this is rated moderate. It's definitely easy. It's flat the whole way. The trail gets a little messy sometimes and you have to go over rocks and cross the river but nothing crazy. This was absolutely lovely.

Short and steep hike up about 400 steps. Incredible panoramic views. Not for the person with vertigo.

As soon as you hit the trail you’re climbing switchbacks all the way up until you hit Echo Mountain point. Beautiful views as your climbing and at the top of Echo Mountain. We went up to Inspiration Point thru Castle canyon trail, it’s a challenging trail with plenty of shade and great views. We came down the Sam Merrill Trail from inspiration point, at first it was nice, lovely tress and shade but then it was switchbacks all the way down with full sun exposure and no shade. As challenging as castle canyon trail is I Would definitely do this hike again.

Saved this trail for last on this day, and the weather cooperated! Wind was not bad, sun was also not bad, temperature was in the 40's. Saw two ravens on way up next to trail. Parking can be a problem at trailhead lot, so I had to wait till someone left. Stairs up were not too bad just take your time, take in the awesome views and you will get to the top. This is a very popular trail so be patient. This is not one you will have to yourself, unless you come really early.

Went to this trail on July 1st.
Easy climb up the stairs with amazing views at the top.
Check the weather before you go because it can be really intense on a hot day, wear your sunscreen.
The only challenge is that the stair passageway is a little narrow and it can be hard to pass by your fellow trail friends
Check it out for sure!
