I was here on a Saturday, plenty of parking at 9a but lot was filling up when I left. Trail was well kept. I took the path to the top and at the peak it wasn't immediately obvious where the trail continued so I just went back the same way. But really cool view.

Family friendly, lots of nice doggos, lots of people.

1.5 hrs (1 hr up and 30 mins down) with 11 and 15 yr olds. Great views of the lake. Crowded but 4 stars due to smoke from wild fires. We got the views and we could see all the way across but not the deep blue color! Keep an eye on the crater webcam if you are not staying at the lodge. Dry and steep going up and starts at 7k ft so take water. And have lunch at the lodge after, while you wait for your table have a drink in a rocking chair on the patio overlooking the lake.

has such a great time looking out the new decks over the marsh. Nobody on the trails. beautiful walk and so well kept. We will be back with a sack lunch next time.

Love this hike, gives great views of the basin, crater lake, wizard island & phantom ship. It is short but it is all uphill. I went to watch the sunset on Garfield & I passed only two people who were headed down while I was going up

Not bad, mainly strenuous on the way back. Bring sturdy hiking shoes, and bug spray.

awesome hike, best to do in the early am. we started at 630, no one was on the trail. far busier after 8.

Did this trail early this morning (8/3) with spectacular weather and minimal crowds until the descent. I had the peak to myself for upwards of 45 minutes. I must stress the extreme crowds toward early afternoon-mid day. The hike is entirely uphill until you reach the peak, but nothing a moderately in shape person couldn’t do. Go early and enjoy!

Easy access and decent walk. Waterfall area was worth the less than two mile walk.
Update: $7 park access.

Great trail for being right in town

Nice short hike with great views of the Lake as well as Wizard Island. Some snow left but the top of the hike is accessible. High traffic.

Worth the hike! Gorgeous view for Mt. Shasta and lake Castle.

Loved this one! Great workout and beautiful trail

This hike is absolutely gorgeous - and not too difficult. It’s fairly steep, but short. And I really didn’t find it as difficult to navigate. It’s not incredibly well marked, but if you read a few descriptions and stay generally heading south, you’ll find the lake! We went on a very hot Sunday (go early; it’s not very shaded as others have noted) and it was pretty popular but not crowded.. The views from Heart Lake are spectacular!

4 points for the hike itself, but 2 for ease of following. The hike is gorgeous, but the places it diverges from the PCT are not marked and involve some steep bushwalking. The trail description should point this out.

Excellent hike with fantastic views. My favorite so far.

Stunning view and worth the hike!

Poorly marked; lots of off-trail hiking in the snow (not this year) made this a rather difficult hike. I didn’t mind much tho, the views made up for it. Had Heart Lake all to myself.

Did it twice this year in the month of July. I believe Soda mountain road (to get to the pct ) is closed. So don't waste a trip out there! Beautiful hike with lots of views

This half of the trail is rough. More of an incline than the first half on Varney Creek and there are more fallen trees to hurdle over. There are several lakes on this loop. Wouldn’t recommend hiking it until mid-summer. At the top of the loop there was still quite a bit of snow pack (2-3 feet) when I went in May. Come mosquito prepared!

this is really an incredible hike. It's not that difficult I would say easy to moderate but some may disagree as there are rocks you have to walk over at times and a slight incline parts of the time. The biggest Beast was actually trying to navigate my way there as I was hiking alone. As other people have said in their reviews it's not a well-marked trail but thankfully I ran into some people and we made it to Heart Lake. It is absolutely stunning with Mount Shasta in the background. Highly recommend this hike. Also be adventurous and hike up the rocks on both sides of the lake so that you can get better views.

also note the trailhead is not the one to the right of the parking lot that is right by the lake there it's all the way at the end of the parking lot if you keep going straight and walk through a line of boulders that almost look like it's blocking off the path that you actually walk in between big rocks and you'll eventually get to a stream that you walk over when you hit that you know you're starting to head in the right direction. But it's about three-quarters of a mile into the trip where the path is not well marked and I wish I could help you navigate it but it's nearly impossible to describe. Oh and by the way the last seven miles of driving to get to the trailhead or absolutely beautiful winding roads.

This doesn’t need another review but I had such a good time I simply must. Every second of this trail is breathtaking. Don’t be fooled by the short distance, this hike is not easy, but it’s a killer work out if you move at a good pace. I think this was a fluke incident but a few falling rocks came down from the peak as I descended and could have ended badly for me if I wasn’t paying attention, make sure to be cautious of your steps and surroundings as the trail is narrow. If you only have time for one hike here, do this hike! You won’t regret it.

Good for all ages! The views were awesome! The other hikers were friendly and that made the day that much better!

Nice quick hike to an overlook of the lake. Definitely worth the time. Roughly 1.5 hr round trip plus photo and snack time. High traffic

Nice, easy hike. There were signs for bees, but we did not encounter any. The trail was very well maintained. There were lots of boardwalks and viewing areas. The visitor center is closed on Monday which meant the bathrooms were closed. We gave this a 4-star because there were lots of options on ways to go, but without a map, it was not clear on how to complete the loop.

Lovely hike through the 2002 Biscuit Fire burn area. Surreal white tree trunks. Some unusual wildflowers but not the Kalmiopsis, drat.

Gorgeous panoramic views of crater lake at the top, and amazing views the whole way. Very steep in the beginning- would consider it more strenuous. Great spots along the way to take in the views and enjoy lunch.

Beautiful meadows and lake views

Went on this hike today and it was beautiful! There is still a little bit of snow along the trail but it's off to the sides and the whole trail is open. A little steep on the way up in some parts but really not too bad. Recommend hiking shoes as it is pretty rocky.
