Lots of snow this morning! Make sure you are prepared if hiking in the snow. About half the trail I was second person then almost all of Flagstaff on the way back down was breaking trailhead. Snow ranged from 2-3" to about 8"-10" deep at points. Waterproof boots are a must. I did wear spikes but didn't really need them for the most part. Not a ton of views due to currently snowfall. But there were several spots where it was still very pretty despite minimal views. I would def do this trail again when it isn't snowing. Worth the hike for sure.

Great simple hike. The trail is in and out of light snow. I had micro spikes on but they were not necessary. The trail was half wet/muddy, half dry. Some deeper drifts, avoidable if you skip the upper lake but as long as it's cold, post holing would be unlikely. Snow is still shallow and sparse enough to summit Square Top Mountain as well.

a few too many road crossings for my taste. saw plenty of mule deer towards the begining of the hike. got a bit slippery with ice and snow which made it slow going.

Wonderful hike! Took my 60 year old parents on this and they loved it. It is very steep for the last half mile, but otherwise a very gradual income. Being a jacket for the lake, the wind has quite the chill. Perfect amount of sun and forested shade on the way up.

The three seniors in my group, 79, 83, 83, found this trail very difficult. I used the elevation readings from my iPhone to calculate an elevation gain of 1,080 feet.

great views, well groomed path

enjoyed this hike however, be aware the trail around the lake can be difficult to keep track of.

Great hike for beginner backpackers staying the night. Great spots on the entire south side of the lake. Found a spot that was fenced in by trees to camp with a nice fire ring. Great for teaching a pup off leash. Weather was incredible

Beautiful hike with great views of Bierstadt, Sawtooth and Evans group, as well as Sawatch Range far away to the south-west. Hiked on Sunday, September 23, 2018, met no more that 25 people along the trail, while crowds were going up and down Bierstadt.
Near the upper lake the trail branches and continues additional for 1.5 miles with a steep elevation gain of 1,500' to the summit of the Square Top Mtn. - almost a Fourteener at 13,754'. That part is quite strenuous. Even greater views from the summit.

This was a great hike. Definitely ignore the parking on Guanella Pass and drive all the way to the top parking lot. We got there at 9:00 on a Saturday and there were still spots left. The hike took about 2.5 hours down and back. By the time we left, the area was PACKED. Start early.

Lovely, fairly easy hike to a beautiful clear lake. Def take the trail around the whole lake. It’s worth it! Beautiful day on 9/21. Didn’t arrive at the trailhead til noon and made it up pretty quick. This is a great trail for families.

Meh. Nicely built trail. Views at the top were pleasant. But the road-crossings made this feel like I wasn’t really off the beaten path. I never found the ladder?! And I didn’t find the trail to be nearly as hard as others describe. I carried poles but never even took them out of my backpack.

Great trail, but definitely a workout with lots of steep inclines and rocky terrain to climb up and over. We went clockwise starting on the Gregory Canyon trailhead in the parking lot and then meeting up with the Flagstaff trail. Saw some mule deer, but more importantly, heads up for bears! Not-so-little guy was greeting people at the parking lot towards later afternoon hours, so be aware. Also parking is very limited and there is a $5 fee if your not registered in Boulder or have a pass.

Hiked this trail on a Thursday. I saw only two people and that was on my return. It was a gorgeous sunny day and the gold leaf aspens on the side of the mountain were beautiful. The lake was great and trail around it is a single track trail that gives you great views of the lake. I thought this was a nice and easy trail. Bring a lunch and eat it on a rock by the lake.

Fantastic trail. Like someone else said, it’s a great leg workout going up. There was a deer just off the trail and didn’t mind us being there at all. It was a great experience.

Easy hike in 4 hours sleep and shitty knees

Absolutely gorgeous hike! Starts off flat, with very steep last 0.5 miles or so to get to the lake. The end was a bit too difficult for my parents, who are not experienced hikers/do not live at altitude. Rocky footing on the trail throughout that can be slick when wet. Your shoes will definitely get wet if you plan on walking around the lake.

Great hike and views. At 55yo, I was surprised it didn’t wear my out. Best adventure of my vacation and a good time with my two teenage daughters.

This was a great hike! I’m fairly positive it was more around 5 miles but we didn’t mind. It’s out in the open with no trees so make sure you wear sunscreen and bring lots of water! Elevation will get ya if you aren’t used to it.

flat for 1.5 miles then really steep for .5
we backpacked mon- tue and saw about 10 groups going up the trail and 10 going back but only 3 sleep overnight. the lake is so big that I did not see that many people up at the lake

bring big repellant but they are not that bad.

it is beautiful

This was a great hike!! Highly recommend it! Beware of sun because it is wide open with no shade. Trail head is not clearly marked from the road. Although, South Park 600 and Mt. Bierstadt trails both begin at the top of Guanella Pass. There are outhouses located at both trail heads. They were very clean and lots of toilet paper. Second Lake is worth the extra steps. Total is about 4.9 miles round trip.

Fun hike through the beautiful fragrant forest of pines. Trail is a somewhat rocky ( not scree) and has a nice but steady incline to the lake. Few stream crossings but we were able to cross without getting our feet wet. The trail around the lake gives several different viewpoints.

Really enjoyed the hike.... lots of forest and open vista. Views are really nice al no the way and the lake did not disappoint! We took trail around which gave views from above the lake... always great perspective!

Great hike with rocky trail... be sure to wear good hiking shoes! Well worth the full trail around the lake...great views from different angles and to get above the lake is nice!

The hike up to the lake is beautiful, there is a variety of terrain and the change of surroundings which keeps it interesting. It goes from an all forested area to more open spaces with better views of the mountains. There are a few creeks to pass over so wear shoes you don't mind getting wet. The pebbles on the trail can be slippery in some places too so be careful when coming down.

Great “1st Backpacking” trail. Elevation profile is a little deceiving as you do most of the climb just before the lake. Around the lake you will find several “developed” camp spots with fire rings and logs to sit on. Absolutely gorgeous. Rained all morning so plan appropriately. Most people know it rains in Colorado in the afternoons but at this altitude and locale it can rain all day in late summer/fall.

Trail is an old Jeep road so it’s wide most of the way and easily passable with a pack. Lots of people frequent this trail but it’s a great hike with a gorgeous payoff to reward your hard work. Camping around the lake is recommended!

Definitely some nice elevation gain with this one! I started at Gregory Canyon and ended on Flagstaff. First mile or so was all uphill and included some rock scrambling. Saw lots of wildlife including a deer. Rangview was also a lovely little hike. Ending with the Flagstaff trail, this is the part everyone speaks of that runs along the road and requires several road crossings. I didn't necessarily find the traffic bothersome but finding the trail after crossing the road could be somewhat difficult, however the alltrails map is super helpful. Would definitely do this hike again! I enjoyed the scenic views of Boulder and the challenge this hike provided.

I gave it four stars instead of five because I didn’t see many flowers. I’m relatively new to hiking and would say it was a moderate hike with a steady climb but not too steep. Our dog loved the little streams and the lake. Very open - no shade so it was warm at times.

Great hike to take visitors too because the views are epic and it’s only an hour from Denver! Wildflowers, big mountain view’s of Bierdstadt and Evans and a mountain lake that’s warm enough to hop in!

Nice, fairly easy trail with some great views, and the lakes are worth it. Got there a little before 8am on a weekday and pretty much had the trail to myself for the most part, a little busier on the way out. Tried to go a bit further on up towards Square Top Mountain, but the trail gets pretty faint after it breaks off so didn’t try too far. Would recommend!
