Be aware of this road in spring! The first 6 miles of the road is all right, but once you’re on the side-road on the way to Silver Star, you’ll be second guessing yourself. Beware! This road is incredibly dangerous for most vehicles and persons not familiar with off-road driving.

Love this trail. I didn't do the full loop as it was really windy when I got up to the top, but I did look at the map when I got back to the parking area and then hiked the lower trail to the second waterfall. it was a day after rains and the lower trail was wet and had very steep drop offs that looked like it went straight into the Columbia. The full loop is a must on my list on a day when the ground is more dry. Read the map in the parking lot, it tells you how to get to the lower trail. I did this hike back in early Feb before the lower trail closed.

Gorgeous views! New favorit trail.. It’s about 1.4 miles up to the top and about 800 ft in elevation gain from the parking lot. Wasn’t sure where the lower half that was closed began though.

BEAUTIFUL views! Just the right amount of hike. PSA— it says this everywhere but somehow I missed the fact that the lower half of the trail is closed. So, avoid walking on the highway like I did and plan accordingly.

Great hike. Still a lot of snow on trail, so would like to do it in summer when clear, but gorgeous with the snow overlay!!

The top top never looked so good.

Not as muddy any more. Not too crowded compared to other gorge trails.

I climb it today April 21 I absolutely love the trail 100%

Did it today and actually made it to the top! So beautiful, the whole entire climb! Will defineftly being doing it multiple times over the summer!

Went out on a Wednesday morning and the place was packed. Nice views and the waterfall was a treat! Only downside was all the traffic (I assume) due to the nearby Oregon trails being closed. Will definitely go back during summer.

Great trail for hybrid hiking/trail running. Beautiful waterfalls, wasn’t too busy today. With spring rains there were no views but it was a fun hike with elevation. Some mud pits in high traffic areas but mostly in good condition. Will definitely be repeating in the summer to check out the views.

Easy, beginner hike but you’ve got to start somewhere.

Just did this trail yesterday. Be advised that it is super muddy and slippery right now, so to add some extra time into your plans to compensate for moving a bit slower. But it’s a great hike.

Beautiful hike! It's a pretty intense few miles up to the summit of Hamilton Mountain with beautiful views along the way and a nice variety of scenery. It was rainy and windy today when we climbed it, so I can't say much about the view at the top, but the trail itself was great. We were surprised to find a little snow at the top, but not too much! Looking forward to trying it again on a sunny day!

Beautiful, difficult hike. You’re climbing the whole time, but the view up top is pretty beautiful. We got to watch snow fall onto the mountains below, which was pretty spectacular. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Nice trail, although the trail was kind of muddy. We hiked out of the woods in a more open area and we spotted lots of beautiful common garter snakes. Bald eagles all over the place.
Gilette lake is not that special but on a sunny day it is enjoyable.
Looking to the west...who are those two rocky persons sitting on top of that isolated rock? Is one of them wearing a hat?

This was a fantastic hike with our kids!!!! The river is gorgeous and the forest is so peaceful.

Fun hike with our dogs. It was pretty crowded early Saturday morning but still worth it. Beautiful views!

Beautiful views of the Gorge. It was not real muddy when we went. The soil is very clay like and it was very compacted down. My shoes were hardly dirty when we got back to the parking lot.
Just an FYI, the spot where the lower trail begins (the area that is closed off) isn’t well marked that it’s closed off. However, once you reach the waterfall, that’s as far as you’re supposed to go. The trail is not blocked off prohibiting you from continuing on, but that is where the forestry would like for you to turn around. This is a really great hike!

Pretty and lightly trafficked trail. Great river views and lush, green forest. Would be great for a picnic, as there are many nice river spots along the way. The only downside is that some parts are close to the road, and those tended to have some vehicle trash and toilet paper around them. Still, other parts were beautiful and secluded, and we only saw two other people while we were there, so it was nice to have to trail to ourselves. Trilliums and wildflowers are just beginning to bloom.

Went all the way there and saw the parking lot with about 30 cars, stopped and turned right around. Not my kind of hiking I prefer only a couple people on the trail not a crowded zoo. Tuned around and hiked henline mountain trail instead. Much better

Nice area but was already kind of busy. I can only imagine how it is in summer...

Great hike with my pup. Only saw a handful of other hikers and heard less than 10 cars pass by. I started at the middle point where these directions take you. I went left to the campground and back up to rainbow campground, then back to my car and my watch had me at 10 miles. Although I did explore all the side trails and frequently walked to river access. Also I did not see a waterfall. Great hike though!

Trail was amazing to run! Lots of scenery. Quad crushing hills. Sign is hard to find, FYI.

The only reason I gave it four stars was due to getting to the trail head. If you love to rough up your vehicle then by all means travel the last 5 miles up there early spring with pot holes the size of a car. BUT! Totally worth it. The pools and streams where beautiful and still recommend the hike

Great hike! Went last year, and plan on going again soon. Good hike to take kids, we even took one of those big wheeled child stroller’s. Much is a road. Ppl in the town are pretty friendly and it’s interesting to see how their energy set up runs.

Tried to make it out here today. First, we drove past the trailhead, we thought it might have been the trailhead cause we drove over railroad tracks but our Google Maps told us to keep going. We only went a bit further though before it started to snow so we turned around and went back to where we'd crossed the tracks to give it a try. However, when we got out of the car there was audible gunfire from nearby. Turns out the trails runs parallel to an area where people like to practice shooting, even though there we signs that said "no shooting" (but they had bullet holes in them...) Anyways, we opted not to try since we weren't sure it was the correct trail head and the proximity of the gun range to the trail seemed too dangerous for our comfort. Once home I confirmed that the area with the gun range was the trailhead so we may go back later in the year when it isn't snowing.

There was still snow on the trail, I would definitely wear boots if you have them. There is a lot of foot traffic. So quiet and beautiful, we can’t wait to do it again!

Cool, easy out and back. Impossible to get lost since you just follow the railroad. Trail is becoming overgrown which is beautiful imo. Very cool old railroad structures. Careful on the bridges and in the tunnels.

This trail is popular, so I would recommend hiking on weekdays. It’s the perfect amount of challenging climbs with gradual trails, throughout many different types of geography. Totally worth it for the view—though the best views are just before the summit (I would say). Wear proper hiking footwear!
