The trail was packed down, little icy in some spots but in great condition. Got a little slushy and slippery on the way down around 3pm. Barely had anyone on the trail but it was a Tuesday. Keep a look out for some grouse on the trail. Would recommend Mirco spikes for the way down but able to do without. No poles needed. View is stunning! Little windy but we had lots of sun! Took us a little under 4 hours and made it up in under under 2 hours. Did have some snacks at the top! Seems like a great spot to backcountry ski!
Trail conditions Tuesday afternoon. Mud, slush, and wet snow. It was still an amazing day, with very little wind and lots of sun.
Prairie Mountain is always rated "difficult," not "moderate," as it is by All Trails, especially considering the roughly 700 m elevation gain over such a short distance.
Beautiful day, no wind...snowy but manageable up ...a bit mucky via Prairie Creek on the way back (finished by 1:00) need micro spikes/poles...sticky snow...no flag at the top, stunning 360 views at the summit
beautiful conditions on Saturday, for once it wasn't super busy.
Nice trail leading to some great views! There are large icy/slushy sections so bring crampons. Coming back down after midday there were muddy sections that weren’t there on the way up.
I have been to Sulphur Mountain via the gondola a few times but hiking going up is of course very rewarding.
Awesome views out there.
Reached the parking lot around 10 am (on Saturday) and it was not very full. Lots of packed snow and ice so crampons are highly recommended. The trail is quite narrow with steep drops in some parts. With the snow partially melted the full width of the trail is not usable. Tread carefully. The Trail has quite a few switchbacks that are not apparent when glancing at the AllTrails app. Once we reached the top the view was with it.
This trail is moderate compared to some truly hard and difficult ones out there. For new hikers it would be difficult. Trails shoes were fine for the most part on the way up. I put on my crampons for a dangerously icy section 2/3 of the way up but then took them off after a short bit as they were no longer necessary. The views from the summit are spectacular! There were too many people out yesterday and some were not following the etiquette of giving way to faster hikers. We decided to hike the loop which gave us a great hike down and around, adding some kms but avoiding the crowds and the steep icy sections. A lot of people were not prepared for the conditions, as you can read about those without spikes and poles-don’t get caught! It was a fantastic and warm day. Try the loop on the way back! It is a much prettier walk going the back route too. Compact snow is the trail for the most part until you get lower down. Step off the trail and you’ll find yourself up to you hips!
very icy in some parts, all up hill, and all downhill in the way back, def worth the view, recommend water and snacks, spikes and poles.
We arrived at the parking lot around 2 pm on Saturday, and it was not busy at all. The trail is mostly snow/ice-covered with some muddy spots. I'm glad I had a pair of cleats, The trail is quite narrow with steep drops in some parts and has quite a few switchbacks. It took about three and half hours round trip. Once we reached the Lookout, the view was spectacular.
Trail was beautiful, extremely icy and slushy. I packed it in around the half way mark, realizing if I didn’t like how slick it was on my ascent, It would be sketchier descending for the lake. Absolutely beautiful and doable if you aren’t a baby about slipping and sliding on the trail.
There is no way this is a moderate difficulty. I feel I am fit and this insanely difficult . But if you want a short quick workout with an amazing view then highly recommend. There is still a lot of snow right now and we didn’t have poles or crampons so we were sliding everywhere it was a tad dangerous
Varied conditions, muddy, icy, rocky... Some very very slippery parts. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to attempt this trail without spikes. Someone was rescued from there just an hour ago.
