once i finished this trail (taken as a loop with part of centennial) i found myself wishing i could go back and change all my other 5-star ratings to 4-star ratings

had to go about a half-mile off the trail to avoid a huge bison rubbing his tumtum on the trail marker, but totally worth it

Great Trail! Variety of prairies, hills, and beautiful valleys. Some bison got in out path. We waited for some time for them to move on. They are in no hurry to go anywhere. Closer than we wanted to be. It was a wonderful time spent with my wonderful wife!

Good trail to get a taste of Custer State Park

Good trail to get the blood flowing after being in the camper all night. Hiked it a couple of times as it was right next to our campsite.

This easy loop provides great views of the Black Hills to the west and the plains to the east. It was a clear day and we could even see the western tip of the Badlands.

Ascending out, steep descending back. Walking stick helpful. Nice variety of terrain. 50/60 buffalo, 1 male pronghorn. Nice expansive views.

Nice truck trail to hike on. Let's you look up and around at the scenery without tripping. At the first intersection continue straight. At the second, continue straight. Came across a bull buffalo wallowing and having a dust bath just past the second intersection. Gave him a wide berth in both directions. He was keeping his eyes on me both times.

Buffalo wallows, buffalo dung, dung beetles, prairie dogs, lots of bluebirds. Poison Ivy last 300ft.of trail under the trees. Blue Asters and Rose Hips. Excellent weather for a hike.

Great hike. Nice views. We met up with 2 buffalo on our hiking trail, rubbing themselves on the trail markers, we got off the trail to keep our distance from them. Also a lot of prairie dogs

Super easy hike. A little steep. Took us 30 min to complete.

Decent trail. Saw lots of prairie dogs and some bison. However, be careful following this map. It deviates from the official trail at the end by following the river- off trail instead of going up the hill.

With every step, you felt closer to Mother Earth. The stream crossings, the rolling prairie filled with wild flowers, cactus, grasshoppers, were a sight to behold. We saw lots of prairie dogs and heard coyotes in the distance. Buffalo were in the area but we didn’t see any. The warm breezes were so beautiful and peaceful. A comfortable hike. Just over 2 miles. Cannot rate easy because of the hills, and some lack of shade.

Beautiful trail through buffalo-inhabited prairie. Watch for POISON IVY. The trail starts out going right through one of the largest poison ivy patches I've seen to date. Aside from the poison ivy, this trail is a nice easy hike. NOT recommended for beginners who can't spot the poison ivy.

Very nice views across the rolling prairie hills! Wildflowers were beautiful! About halfway round we ended up in buffalo territory fortunately they were to the right where the trail turned left. We could certainly hear and smell them though! Great quick outing 1~1.25 hour trip!

Highly recommend for people looking for something short, easy, and scenic.

Nice, well marked trail through terrain which included prairie, wooded areas and hills. Beautiful scenery!! Prairie was in full bloom and the smells were wonderful.
Recommend hiking the trail counterclockwise which allows the longest and steepest grade to be downhill for the last portion of hike.
Make sure you have a camera to capture wildlife. Please remember it's Wildlife which means you may see some or maybe not, but it's there. More than likely they are watching you.

Nice short trail With big views, wildflowers and ripe raspberries

Nice, easy hike but watch for buffalo chips on the trail. Beautiful scenery with chirping prairie dogs as a bonus.

Very enjoyable trail. It passes through a prairie dog town. The trail is mostly flat through an open field, with some rocky walls and wooded areas along the sides of the field.

Did this hike & really enjoyed it. Longest 2.1 miles we have ever done. I think it's closer to 3. We hike a lot.

Nice walk to gorgeous vistas across the plains.

great little hike. took a little over an hour to complete the loop. it was a little over 2 miles. great scenario. encountered deer and could see the bison across the ravine!

One of my favorite hikes within wind cave! The trail in definitely overgrown in some areas. Also this is in wind cave national park so dogs are NOT allowed on the trail.

Not as tough as described by the park info. Nice views and plenty of wildlife. The trail goes right through a dog town. We also saw some birds and a buffalo right on the trail. We turned back a little over halfway not wanting to get too close to the buffalo and also because it was getting pretty hot. As others have said, I wouldn't suggest hiking this trail in summer without some cloud cover.

It's also not quite what you might expect from a trail with canyon in the name, although there are some nice rock formations along the way.

Beautiful trail. Alternates between open grassland and pine or oak wooded areas with a couple of stream crossings. Gorgeous views. Encountered a herd of bison about half way but was able to skirt around them at a safe distance. Note: the park rates this as a moderate trail and I would agree since the inclines are fairly steep and long - just didn’t feel like an ‘easy’ trail.

Absolutely beautiful! Fall colors, babbling brooks, incredible vistas. My kids loved the rock sculptures as well. Highly recommended and we will be back:)

Beautiful scenery and buffalo were just over the ridge. Also saw lots of buffalo bones near old watering holes. The wind was particularly strong at the intersection at trail 7 so I followed it up the hill and found a great view and gusts of wind that almost took me to my knees, which felt wonderful.
