12/8/2018 - My 86th hike to the top was great. I started at @7:30am and the trail was frozen and icy so I wore my Kahtoola Microspikes all the way up. Lot of snow halfway up however the trail was easy and well packed from previous hikers.
Warning! There's a big dead tree laying across the trail @10-15 min after the trail t's off (at the top of Fatman's Loop). It looks precarious and ready to slide further down. If that happened, I'd hate to be below! I'm reporting it to the Forestry Service because it's a definite hazard. I'll include a photo here. Because of the snow, it took me 1:25 to reach the top (not counting 3 short breaks) I've hiked it as fast as 1:10 in better conditions.

Hiked on 12/5/18 - It's pretty easy, only a 620' elevation gain (Source: Flagstaff Trails Map) from the parking lot to the top of the loop (where the Mt.Elden trail T's off) so I hike the Loop clockwise, then counterclockwise.
I've now hiked the Double Loop 68 times, Humphreys Peak 4 times, Mt Elden 85 times, O'Leary Peak 51 times, Bill Williams Mt 5 times, Kendrick Peak 7 times, Lockett Meadows-Inner Basin trail hikes 5 times, Sandy Seep to Heart Trail to Mt Elden and back 2 times. Also a bunch of Caves Crater hikes.
I never really hiked much before I moved to Flagstaff (August of 2013) I spend @4 months out of every year in the Altered

A very nice short 1-1.5 hour hikes. Trails can be confusing so pay attention to where it is most trafficked. Rocks are steep and I recommend at the intersection going right instead of left. That will save you. Rocks are slippery.

Great trail and a lot of potential to go even longer with other connecting trails. So it could be a short hike to a few hour one depending on what you want to do.

Great trail. Some fun spots with rocks to climb as well.

It's definitely longer than .4 miles. Cave is pretty large in some areas and really low in others. The ground is incredibly uneven. Do not attempt without a light source, do not rely on a cell phone. At the very end, there is a tiny opening where you can squeeze through into another small area.

Nice easy trail for people and pups. Went while visiting some friends in the area as an easy afternoon hike and fit the bill perfectly.

Well maintained, well marked trail that's perfect for a quick hike after work or before breakfast on the weekends. There are a lot of cool trees and rocks along the trail so it'd be a fun hike for families.

Great distance for travelers staying in Flagstaff! I went up on a Monday afternoon with not too many people along the way. The incline gradually gets steeper and steeper and the air thinner and thinner. Visiting from WA, this trail felt like a typical incline, though the elevation is always an adjustment. Views are amazing and getting up to the lookout tower is worth it! Though the gate to climb the tower was closed when I got there, it’s still an amazing view from the ground! Took me just under 3 hours with stopping along the way, I also clocked in at 5.7 miles RT.

Great trail.. took our time and enjoyed the views. Had a few nice climbs too! Took the trail right to left and it was easier than the other way.

Great trail running trail

The trail is not 0.8 miles total. The cave itself is a mile long, and you have to walk to the cave entrance from the parking lot, so my phone said 2.15 miles total after we did it. Come ready for climbing and lots of rocks. Bring multiple flashlights and and extra jacket because it’s cold in the cave. But it was pretty cool and different than most trails!

Easier if you're short. Tall people will have a harder time in some spots. chunky ground, a low ro walk. Have a headlamp. Makes it much better. Dress for the chill.

Good views overlooking the city of Flagstaff and surrounding hills with pretty aspen's at the top. A fairly busy/popular trail. A decent and steady incline makes for a great workout (my app clocked the route as 5.7mi up and back). Lots of switchbacks... glad I wore my sturdy rubber bottom hiking shoes, as it's gets rocky in parts, definitely saved my toes and makes for a quicker descent.

The trail was well marked all the way up. It was a little technical in some spots if you don’t hike regularly. I personally had no problem, except for the fact I’m a flat lander from Missouri. I had to stop a take a few breaks, but I still made it to the top in two hours. I only drank maybe two liters of water. I would definitely hike it again.

Perfect trail, it’s a bit longer than expected but beautiful. The views are badass and even after a good snow it was chilly but yet no way unbearable. The snow was melting so the trail was a bit muddy so be careful where you step. Some trekking poles wouldn’t hurt. You couldn’t see the top of MT. Elden due to the fog but still super pretty. Me and my girlfriend did it in 1:12 and it was 3.06 miles. We took a ton of breaks because she doesn’t hike all that often. But she made it through fine. It is a little hard to find though.

The ranger station next door is not where you wanna go. It’s a parking lot at the trailhead is where you want to go and park. At the ranger station it will have a sign for fat man. There won’t be one at the parking lot.... ya I know stupid right? Make sure to layer up it was a little chilly.

Take water and trail snacks! Tricky and challenging climb, and the view at the top is great but plenty of terrific views all the way up. The decent is a whole different group of muscles, so a terrific overall workout. Don’t miss this one!

October 6th hiked up there to look at the Autumn/fall leaves. Trees looked pretty. The lookout tower was also opened so we went up there as well to capture some great pics.

Bring some hiking sticks and a jacket. It gets windy and cold, and the hike is indeed hard.

A beautiful setting filled with rich history, fantastic views, and a good burn on the way up all the stairs. It's a short hike, but well worth it, especially if you go up and down the stairs twice.

Nice leisurely hike and the trail is well maintained.

Loved the trail. Hiked with a group of kids and they all did well! Paved and not very natural but it’s cool for what it is. Hiked it back in July

Nice hike! You get some nice views from Mt Elden

great quick trail- just outside of the hussle!!

Well maintained trail. The ending isn’t the most scenic and the day was particularly rough because of controlled burns . Last part is tough

Nice views going up. Very steep - took us 5 hours up & back 5 miles to the cell towers ( didn't realize that was the destination!). It's called a "lookout" not a "scenic lookout" for good reason - the buzzing towers make you want to head right back down. But views on the way up were better. Tho steep, the footings were good.
