My Boy Scout troop hiked this loop during our visit to the park & the USS Silversides. It was an easy walk that showcased the unique features of Lake Michigan sand dunes, a combination of beach, wetlands & forest.

It was a good trail. Easy thing moderate.

Make sure you have a map in hand. There are a lot of connecting trails around and the markers are not very helpful. Thankfully you have Lake Michigan on one side and Muskegon Lake on the other side so you can keep your bearings if you pay attention. It wasn’t as challenging as I would have liked. There wasn’t a lot of incline but the sand will definitely give you a work out. I did the loop that went through the campground. The way back was mostly flat and pretty easy. The beginning and end of the loop are mostly shaded but the hike before you reach the campground is in open sun on the sand. I brought my dog and she had a good time. Right after you go through the campground there is some beach where my dog was able to get in the water and cool off. (Leashed) there are restrooms near the trailhead parking lot and also at the campground.

This is a very beautiful area. The warped and scattered trees are amazing. Great workout as well.

A hidden gem of a park with deer, raccoon, cranes, and chickadees through the winter. It boasts surprising vistas with tall, deep forests in between and after a fresh snowfall it is gorgeous.

I had a great time but the outline isn’t for people with dogs. Dogs can go to the dune stairs and the parking lot of Hoffmaster. No beach access allows pets.

200 plus stairs up is worth the view!

Love going here with my 3 year old. This is our favorite trail!

Trail was poorly marked, but a fun hike none the less. Eve when off-trail, was easy to get back on. Lots of great views of the dunes and lake.

There were two bathrooms on the trial, one at the beginning and one in the campground.
The map provided at the trail head covers all the trails in the area, I preferred to use the AllTrails app. However, if you wish to know what the trail markers mean, you will need to reference the map they provide.
Nice shaded hike through the forest to begin, we took a left at the first fork to save the overlook view of Lake Michigan for last. The trail runs next to Muskegon Lake and provides a nice view.
We didn't like how the trail leads you through a swimming area before you reach the channel. We also were not fans of the walk on the campground road as this lasted longer than we would have liked.
We decided to extend the hike a bit once we reached the channel between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan, this gave us a nice view of the light houses.
I do agree with some of other reviews, this trail is poorly marked. As you hike the sand dune ridge, there are some great views. There are two overlooks with benches. Thank you Gramma Gwen, we really enjoyed the rest.
Overall, it was a nice hike with diverse scenery. Some of the sandy hills were really good exercise, I agree with the moderate rating.

A great hike for bird watching, and the views are gorgeous. I was married here in these woods. I met an owl here once as well. Sanctuary Woods is one of my faves.

The tail head is a bit illusive. Drive into the Snug Harbor entrance, turn left after entering, drive approx. 100 yards, park, walk across Memorial Drive, trail head is between the corner of Peterson and the park offices, more toward Peterson.
It's a nice walk, Lost Lake is pretty, and the frogs are happy to see you judging by their serenade.

This trail is dog friendly, the beach is not. We bring our dog all the time but turn around and head back when we hit the beach. A lot of people do this with their dogs :)

It was stunning!! We really enjoyed it!! Got off the trail a couple times! The hike was enjoyable though! Markers need to be better!

Although the All Trails app implies that the trailhead is behind the State Park office; it's actually east of it, a few yards short of the intersection of Peterson and Memorial. It's virtually impossible to spot as you're driving by. It's a beautiful hike and I'm looking to going again!

One of the most beautiful hikes I’ve had! Views are amazing, I’ve lived here almost 20 years and have never hiked here. What was I thinking. Only passed one hiker today, highly recommend this trail.

Great walk to get your heart rate up (those stairs!) and see nature all around. Stumbled upon an owl once perched under one of the bridges - amazing!

This is a great place to get a fantastic stair workout! View from the top of the Big Red Lighthouse and Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan. Nice trails to continue on if you like.

This is one of the better hikes I've done in the lower peninsula. It definitely exceeded my expectations. There's diverse terrain, elevation, and gorgeous views of Lake Michigan and rolling dunes. You'll get the heart rate up, but nothing too strenuous. I went on a Thursday afternoon on a cloudy day in late March, and only passed two or three people on the 4.3 mile loop. Not sure how active it is in the summertime. You will definitely want to use the AllTrails app for this hike, as you will encounter many other trails that branch off the main path with no markers or signs. Navigation can be a little tricky at times, and lack of helpful markers in many areas is the only reason I didn't rate this trail a full 5 stars. But it's nice to know there are other trails to explore if you decide to go back!

Good workout and hike but a few places were solid ice. More people than I expected, most with dogs unleashed (does anyone follow the rules?). I think will be quite busy in the warmer months. I prefer more seclusion but if you're a beach person this is nice.

No need for hiking shoes. Running shoes will do fine. Stair climb leads to beautiful views, but not much else to explore.

We didn't do the entire 4 mile due to it still being a bit cold, and having littles, but it was beautiful!

Great, easy hike in the snow. Trail was marked with others boot prints. Really beautiful views and very peaceful.

I sneak out here every single chance I get. For me, snug harbor has the most inspiring trails. You can definitely get some good vertical and the views are breathtaking! My favorite part is getting to the tippy tops of the dunes and watching the eagles fly around, so close. If you’re lucky you might even spot their gigantic nest!

Perfect distance for a nice relaxing walk!

Great hike up the boardwalk, and if you feel adventurous take the boardwalk ramp down and into the woods. Great hike!

This trail kicked our butts. Others have mentioned it wasn't too sandy, but that was not our experience. My fitness tracker counted 50% more distance based on steps, because we we sliding backwards in the sand the whole hike. We still enjoyed ourselves, but man it was deep sand (at least along the top of the ridge) and it was a hard hike. Also, we had issues with some of the markers and keeping track of the trail so we did an annoying amount of backtracking. That said, the views were amazing and made it (nearly) worth it!

This is our second time hiking this trail and we loved it. Being a Sunday, there was a few more hikers than on this past Wednesday but not overly crowded at all (more dogs this time but all behaved and most on leashes). We saw squirrels, chipmunks and a variety of birds. Ended up making the loop a little shorter by cutting across the dunes and the far tip. Saved a good 30 minutes hiking across soft sand and paved road.

We loved this trail due to the vantage points and diverse views.
