Great views of lake Mowich as well as Lake Eunice on the way up to the fire lookout.

Just did this hike today. It was cloudy and foggy so no views. We did see a Mt Goat. The hike was challenging and fun. It just gets steeper as you go. So I also tracked the hike with my Garmin watch. Total distance from the lower trailhead was 6.7 miles. We really didn't take any detours so not sure where the 5.3 miles listed above comes from. Maybe they didn't go all the way to the top? We had 3590 feet of elevation gain but that is with a GPS altimeter so may not be perfectly accurate but I think it is closer to reality than that which is listed above. So be prepared and have a great time.

We returned this year and the hike down to Crater Lake was just as memorable, but also more crowded. We had absolutely perfect weather and the water was as blue as ever. We chose to drive around the lake rather than take the boat tour to Wizard Island. Suspect one day we'll do that too. Worth the half hour down and 45 minutes up. Enjoy!

Short trail with lots of switchbacks, it’s shaded and has benches along the way. Very well maintained and is the only trail that takes you to the water

view was socked in but it was beautiful on the way up. trail was well kept.

A beautiful hike! My wife and I carried our lunch in our packs, and ate just after we got to the falls; an easy hike at that point. We decided to finish the entire 2.5 mile loop. Be warned! The last 2/3 of the hike is much more difficult, and--VERY important-- there is NO cell phone coverage in the area. I would upgrade this hike to above moderate for the entire loop; fairly easy for the hike to the falls. The Redwoods are spectacular, (better than LBJ Grove)! Oh yeah, I did not see even one Trillium; they must bloom at a different time of the year.

Went on Saturday 8/4 and it was busy! If you do a weekend get an early start or you’ll be parking way down the hill. Went from Mowich to Eunice to the lookout.

Holy shit, bring big spray. Bust out that DEET! We brought some hippie natural organic stuff and it did not work whatsoever. These mosquitos were of a different breed! Great trail, took my 60 year old Mom and she took her time and had a great day. Picnic at the top and hope Mt. Rainier is visible! Great hike, but bring that bug spray!

To get to the trail you have to go through about 5 miles of rocky road - heads up. Trail started out at steady incline through forested trees that were pretty and kept me shaded which was good. Once you come out though it’s nothing but a straight climb up rocks and a steady incline up the mountain. Had to take a couple breaks and I’m a pretty experienced hiker. Huge horse flies on the way up which were annoying and I would say the trail wasn’t marked clearly for the rock part. The top was crowded with people and horse flies. The view was just eh because it was foggy so pictures were hard to get from any angle. The trip back down the trail was tough on the knees, quads, calves -pretty much entire legs lol but I finished it. Not sure i would climb it again. It’s three days later and I’m still sore all over my legs. Bring lots of water - for the steep incline rock part. I went through 64oz by the time I was done.

Highly recommend going on a clear day. No bug issues. Hardest hike I’ve ever done but so glad I did it. Lots of chipmunks, birds and a few goat sightings on our visit 8/2/18. Beautiful and majestic.

Stunning!! My guy and I had such a great time with this one. Lovely forested beginning which leads up to Eunice Lake. Took a dip in the blue green water and swam with the salamanders. Then up to the top to the Lookout. Wildflowers were starting to pop! The views...jaw dropping. And, we had it all to ourselves! BE WARNED: Bring bug spray, and not a natural one (which is what I wanted to bring). The bugs mean business up there!!!

Beautiful trail and scenery! Bring bug spray.

Hiked this today, such a shame the view from the top was super bad because of a local fire, it was really smokey up there. Also the theme of the day from other hikers I encountered seemed to be “it’s so much longer than I thought!”. My strava GPS had this at 11kms there and back. The trail was super easy to follow and there was beautiful wildflowers especially towards the top of the mountain. The last road there is gravel but actually in pretty good shape. I’m sure when the conditions are better and the view from the top is clear it’s amazing, however without that it was a bit of too much effort for not enough reward for me, sadly.

One of my best so far. Beautiful scene. And if you want to see salamanders, go look inside the lake, you will see many of them. There are sooo many mosquitos, flies and bees. Bring bug spray unless prepare yourself to be eaten alive!

Absolutely beautiful! Stunning views! We took the pups but it was too rugged for their paws. The first half of the trail is wooded and like any other trail we’ve taken them on but the second half is extremely rocky and not great for dogs paws.

Awesome leg burner! Recommend getting there EARLY and bring your best camera AND bug spray! Saw lots of goats and got amazing photos! The way down is almost as hard as the way up and the rock climbing section is pretty challenging.

1.5 hrs (1 hr up and 30 mins down) with 11 and 15 yr olds. Great views of the lake. Crowded but 4 stars due to smoke from wild fires. We got the views and we could see all the way across but not the deep blue color! Keep an eye on the crater webcam if you are not staying at the lodge. Dry and steep going up and starts at 7k ft so take water. And have lunch at the lodge after, while you wait for your table have a drink in a rocking chair on the patio overlooking the lake.

One of my favorite hikes by far! Hiked 8/5/18, got to the trailhead around 9:30 am for prime side of the road parking. Bring bug spray because those buggers are RELENTLESS!! But the views at the top at magnificent. Second time doing this hike and besides the road to drive to get here I have nothing but praise for this magnificent trail. It’s a pretty hard steep hike but totally worth it at the top. Make sure you get up on the fire lookout and see Rainier in all its glory. Day was beautiful and we spent about an hour at the top just taking into the view.

Love this hike, gives great views of the basin, crater lake, wizard island & phantom ship. It is short but it is all uphill. I went to watch the sunset on Garfield & I passed only two people who were headed down while I was going up

My 22yr old son picked this climb, I trusted that it would be moderate, never again. We got to the upper trailhead late at 7pm. (Note, the gravel road up is pretty rutted and squirrely.) We knew we had to make the summit by 8:30 to see the sun set. We covered the 1st mile in about the 30 min but the upper stretch is very tough. I spent much less time looking for goats then making sure my feet kept moving. Around every bend was another climb through the boulders. All that aside, the top is epic. It was crystal clear making the view fantastic all the way to Rainier. The hike down after sunset would have been okay but my headlamp died leaving us with one cellphone flashlight resulting in a few bruises and scrapes. The top was worth the effort, just make sure you have excellent mosquito repelent (we did) and a backup headlamp (we didn't) for the descent.

awesome hike, best to do in the early am. we started at 630, no one was on the trail. far busier after 8.

Did this trail early this morning (8/3) with spectacular weather and minimal crowds until the descent. I had the peak to myself for upwards of 45 minutes. I must stress the extreme crowds toward early afternoon-mid day. The hike is entirely uphill until you reach the peak, but nothing a moderately in shape person couldn’t do. Go early and enjoy!

The scenery was amazing!!! One of my fave hikes!! We went for a swim in Eunice Lake, and the water temp was perfect!! Downside? Sooooooo many mosquitos!!!! We had bug spray with DEET and still got eaten alive!!!

Great scenic trail. Easy to follow, passes 2 lakes.
Road up there was long but in good shape overall.
Go early to beat the crowds.

Bugs spray is a must, great hike though with amazing views. You might want to consider what you drive to get to the trail head parking. 20 plus miles of rough gravel road in a rental car was rough

Nice trail. Went around 6pm. Was greeted in the end by a little brown bear. Really scary when hiking alone. But I calmly walked by and it didn’t come towards me. I was by bridge view the elk.

This is a well done trail and is exactly how it's described. It is strenuous especially on the way back up. It is not meant for elderly or unprepared. We did the boat tour to Wizard Island which was awesome.

Beautiful hike! The waterfall is very small but there are endless blackberries!

excellent views bring bug spray

Totally fell in love with this beautiful view of Mt. Rainier. Crazy many mosquitoes, bugs, and flies and rough road for about 11 miles to get to the trailhead. But worth it.

Great hike, but the bugs were horrible. Might be best to do this hike earlier in July because the mosquitos were unbearable! Great views though!
