Did just the Moore’s wall part of the trail today and it was absolutely lovely!! The trip to the top was a good workout but totally doable. Views spectacular without having to go all the way to the “big” mountains of N.C.!!!

Excellent hike! Not many views on the way up. The view at the top is definitely awesome and made the hike worth doing!!

Great hike during the first Hanging Rock State Park "Reach the Peaks" event on National Public Lands Day in 2013. Lots of views, great ups and downs and be prepared to sleep well after.

Great hike- nice climb and scenic view at the top. I definitely recommend taking the left (clockwise) side of the loop on the way up. More scenic and variable terrain compared to taking the side that has stairs.

on Five Peaks Hike

Fun exercise, especially in the fall! The best way to do it is start with Moore’s Wall...700+ stairs to climb...but CLIMBING stairs is way better than coming down that many. Too hard on the knees.
Check in at the Visitor’s Center and tell them you are doing the Challenge. They’ll give you a paper to log your times at each Trailhead.
I took the MST trailhead, at the Visitors Center parking lot, to the lake, and started Moore’s there. The Visitors Center people will tell you to walk up the road through the camp ground, if you start with Moore’s Wall. But I would much rather walk a trail!
When you’re finished, turn your times in and you can get a ‘5 Overlooks Challenge’ patch. Pretty cool.
For a real challenge, you should add the Indian Creek Trail for another 8 miles...total of around 18. Now that’s a challenge and a GREAT day :)

on Five Peaks Hike

the park does offer a five peaks challenge historically in September but have heard that will now be held in the spring 2019.

This is a really nice hike. We did, in fact, go counter-clockwise and started with Moore's Knob, which is what I would recommend. Strava says 10.5 miles with a little under 2000' of elevation change. Moore's Knob and Hanging Rock are the coolest, the other "peaks" are cool too, but the other definitely stand out. Great trail for dogs, mine had a blast. The entire trail is well-shaded, so cool even if the sun is out. A bit out of the way for us in Raleigh, but was definitely worth the day trip.

From the Dan River to the Hanging Rock State Park parking lot, this trail takes you across maybe 10 creek crossings, with several up to ankle deep as well as takes you to Window and Hidden Falls near the top; I hiked this during the Pilot Mtn to Hanging Rock 32 mile event., as 100s of runners came down the trail as I was going down and up. Nice cool fall day and a great hike!

I started out using the left side is the loop. This part of the loop is @2.8 miles. This was easy until @1.5 miles in and then it started uphill. Once I reached the top I decided to go on the remainder of the loop which is straight down. There are a good bit of step rocks going down so you have to be careful not to go to fast. The second part of my trek was @1.8 miles. This part took a lot less time than the first part of the hike. I only met one man his child on the way up and then maybe 6 people on the way down. Much less traveled trail than others in the part.

Well maintained trail. Easy hike if you are in shape. Not too busy. Great 360 degree views from lookout tower. Too early to see the leaves changing and too late to jump in the lake after a sweaty hike. The beach was closed already by the trailhead.

No traffic past the waterfalls. An easy hike until the end if you start at Park. Coming back up those steps challenges you.

I ran this trail earlier today. It's pretty strenuous but not too bad. The most difficult part is near the summit where for about 2/10s of a mile you are on uneven terrain and/or wooden cross tie stairs. You are rewarded for your effort with stunning views of the valley below.

Great trail and view, less crowed than hanging rock trail.

Hands down the best trail at Hanging Rock- recommend starting clockwise at the fork, going right is shorter but has a very steep incline the entire hike. Views from the lookout tower are truly 360 allowing you to see all the park, lake, hanging rock, pilot mountain, and even Greensboro and Winston Salem in the distance, and buffalo mountain in Virginia.

My husband and I went today and took our fur baby and had a great time. We took the longer trail to the top (which isn't for everyone) and then took the shorter (stairsteps) out. We all around walked 10 miles today.

From benign to intense. A must hike.

A great and lengthy hike from Dan River to Hanging Rock and back. Indian Creek Trail is simple and has several creek crossings. Hanging Rock Trail and views are super!

The day I hiked this I got a massive amount of rain dumped on me for a couple miles. The creeks were a little high but still plenty manageable.

Good hike through the woods. I combined this trail with the Cook's Wall Trail for more mileage. Great views all around!

Good hike through the woods with several creek crossings. I linked up with the Hanging Rock Trail to make a longer and much better hike.

An excellent hike with plenty of elevation change and challenge. One of the best hikes in the park. The lookout tower is unbelievable. Views in every direction for MILES! That was excellent.

This hike was fun and challenging with great views. We got to the parking lot around 8 or so and it was almost empty. Note, the bathrooms don't open til 9 I think, so you have to hike down into the picnic area to find some unlocked bathrooms at the start. We hiked counterclockwise, with Hanging Rock first and Moore's Knob last. There were probably 10 or so other people at Hanging Rock when we got there, so not too bad. Best views were from Moore's Knob but it was hot and buggy by the time we got there. The whole thing took us about 5-5.5 hours with ample time stopping at the overlooks. It got toasty and much more crowded towards the end. I didn't think the Cook's Wall portion added much to the experience and the trail was overgrown. I also didn't really enjoy the last mile or so by the lake and parking lots -- not a very fun way to end the hike! It's definitely more than 9.5 miles; more like 10.8 or even longer.

We started on the Jomeoke trail (picks up behind rest room) and joined up with ledge springs trail. Almost felt like we were doing the route backwards but it was a good strenuous hike, beautiful views and lots of wildlife. Great hike and I can’t wait to return in the fall to do it again when the leaves are changing

This is one of our regular spots, thankfully it stays fairly quiet on the trails and in the fields.bLove to bring my dogs here.

Challenging and scenic! Amazing overlooks. Nice for a high paced workout.

Nice shady trail. Does have lots of roots and rocks on the path that could make you howl if you don't watch your step!

Definitely some sweat but didn’t think it was hard if you’re moderately in shape

The best hiking is done on these trails and the Grindstone. Best views in the park.

Two of the best trails in the park. Great views and challenging to some degree. Rewarding hike! Those steps are a bit of a workout!

A somewhat lengthy woodsy hike. Less hiked than many of the other trails. Nice and quiet.

Great Trail! 600+ steps going up and great view at the lookout point. Steady and patience is needed going down. Well worth it!
