Well marked trails. Nice views of southern mass. The cisterns, bat house, and vernal pool were awesome little touches that made the hike more than just a hike

This trail is beautiful but it is definitely challenging!

I enjoyed this trail for a family hike. Wide enough for us all to walk together. It is good for dogs too! A bit icy. Only one big hill st the end of the loop. Good hike fir hikers of all levels

Update to my review from 6 days ago. I finally did the whole thing, my tracker said 7.5 miles and it took 2:49 hiking at a good pace.

I had never been to the east coast of the lake before, and boy is it wretched. Many of the markings are faded and difficult to spot, if they exist at all. There are a few streams without bridges, and tons of downed trees and brush blocking the paths. Lots of muddy paths with brambles all around. Not fun, but if you get through that part with dry shoes the south/west/north of the lake is a nice trek.

I've only hiked about 3 miles of the north and western sides, but it's very nice around this time of year. Getting a bit lost I came upon an adorable cove with a grey heron flying not more than 100 yards away. A few days later I found another spot with 2 swans swimming together. The air is crisp and the colors are out. There are lots of downed trees and brush blocking the path from the winds, but it's easy enough to kick aside or step over. It rained heavily a few days ago and due to the leaves falling off the trees and the cool weather it hasn't dried well, be careful of slipping in mud or stepping in puddles.

If there isn't much wind then you will hear highway traffic noise while you are on the north part of the trail. Once you get towards the southern half of the lake it gets nice and quiet and aside from walking by people's backyards occasionally you feel like you are out in the woods.

There are spots where the path is confusing, I would not recommend trying to do the whole thing in one go without at the very least a good map. Or you can do what I'm doing and just explore it one bit at a time, walking down every path, discovering cool shortcuts and spending time enjoying the wonderful out of the way hills, outcroppings, coves and capes.

Note to Bob Simek - the granite thing on the west side is an artifact left from 'Hopkinton Springs' of which no photos exist. Next time you are by that stone bridge look around, you should be able to spot the placards which explain it all. It includes a map of which artifacts are where, although some are covered in leaves this time of year.

Easy side of moderate with lots of roots, mud, flat rocks.

Excellent trail. Well marked with some nice views along the way. Might be better suited as an Easy than Moderate, but a really enjoyable walk and hike. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area.

Went here with a 9 and 3 year old hoping for an easy path- there were too many places that the 3 year could not handle. Great trail, had to stop 1/4 of the way and turn back bc kids got tired.

Will definitely come back, sans kids.

Very easy trail if you hike like we do.

Many of the paths are overgrown with thorns!!

Many of the paths are poorly marked and could be quite confusing if you don’t pay attention.

Gorgeous! Highly recommend.

Excellent trail, very people and dog friendly. Hike it early as it gets quite busy after 11, especially on weekends. A very moderate hike that can be made in under two hours. Take the few extra minute to go to East side of peak to get a nicer view to the east. Mt. Wachusetts is prominent to the South, but you have to find just the right spot to see Monadnock to the West. Lots of hawks during migrating seasons.

First time unplanned exploration so this review is just based on a very small piece of the forest. We spent most of our time on the old cart roads but the few single track trails we found we're more of a 4 star rating. Whisteling Caves Trail was the highlight of this short hike. l look forward to exploring more.

Would have probably been more fun going clockwise, but great trails. Easy to feel lost in nature right outside a city.

Lot’s to choose from, but not well marked.

Took the clockwise loop up Midstate to Wapack... less steep. Couldn’t see a view from Nuttings Hill but the views from Watatic were very good. I was the only person on the peak when I arrived, 9:30 on a Wednesday, but the parking lot was filling up as I was leaving. Definitely one of the better views in Ma. Trails can be very confusing without a GPS. A few more signs at the various junctions would be helpful.

A quick note to Liz Tosti - Liz, weren't you using your AllTrails app? It can be quite confusing hiking around the reservoir although it looks easy on a map. That's why you have the app on your phone and a download of the trails so you can navigate. I know what you're saying though, last time I was here I had a map only and did a 7 or 8 mile loop where this time I was looking to streamline things and got it down to 6.6 miles. Bring the app with you, use it to navigate, it's fun that way and you don't get lost and you get to see the stuff you like. My trail run this day was great, enjoyed every minute of it BUT did have to reference the AT map frequently to stay on course. I need to figure out what that granite thing is over on the west side of the lake. Maybe I'll call the historical society and ask.

Gorgeous, well marked

Did the Wapack trail on Saturday. Nice steep climb and beautiful views!

There are so many great trails at this park. Also a working farm with a ice cream stand. This has become my favorite walking spot!

Well maintained and well marked trails. We spent several hours there and only got to a few of the trails. Moderately challenging hikes. Nice staff. Looking forward to going back. Minimal bugs right now despite the recent rains.

In all fairness I was warned with all the reviews mentioning the lack of markings! I guess I didn’t expect it to be sooo poorly marked. The hike was beautiful. I’ve never seen so many colorful mushrooms. However it was truly unbelievable how poorly marked the trail was. It started out with yellow trail markings that at time became completely blue markings only to return to yellow. Many times at mentioned (we ended up in the field too) as a matter of fact we ended up going on a neighborhood street and met a gentleman who said he always meets people at the same point who are also lost. We definitely bushwhacked several times. All in all we hike 8 miles.

Perfect for what we needed - an easy hike with pretty foliage.

This is an awesome trail that will push you to your limits. There is multiple routes to explore that accommodate your level. Make sure to bring plenty of water.

One of the best easy hikes around. Used to always do an out and back trail up Watatic, but I tried this a few weeks ago and again yesterday, and it was great! My hiking partners liked this loop better both times.

I love the Blue Hills. As a Boston resident, the Skyline trail at BH provides a nice challenging alternative to driving the distance to NH for more challenging hikes. I disagree that this is a moderate hike because the terrain is very rocky, one needs to be prepared to climb and descend jagged stairs at regular intervals on this trail. I would recommend bringing a Gatorade (or similar drink) because depending on where you end your hike, you are walking 9 to 11miles. I also recommend an early start (especially during the warmer months of the year).

I completed this hike by myself in 5 hours (from Quincy to Trailside Museum off 138) and in 6 hours when accompanied by a friend who is fit but is not a hiker.

fun easy walk. bring your bug spray.

Not too challenging, but uphill for the first half mile or so. Trails are very well marked. Maps along the way. Some traffic.

Good cardio workout for sure

Not technical mostly flats some ups and some downs. Only come here if your looking for an easy relaxing ride. Not fun for what I was looking for

The trails are ok, but very poorly marked, particularly the one with the red blaze. Decent option if you are looking for something close to the city.

Great hike and the ice cream shop/petting zoo is a fun ending! Take a trail map as the trails overlap many times and some are poorly marked.
