Very easy hike. Very packed on weekends. Plenty of shade. Bathrooms at trailhead were clean. Plenty of parking. The only reason for a three star rating was due to how many people were on the trail.

Nice hike, with much needed shade. Watch your step, don't be like me who talks more than pays attention to whats in front of him

Home Sweet Home!!!

This is a very nice and less talked about park in the West LA area (close to LAX!) I especially love the lake at the bottom of the hill. It was like my very own Central Park next door to me! There is also a beautiful stream w/ a small bridge next to the lake that is nice to relax at. Perfect area for picnics, bike riding, and duck gazing.

Update: I explored this trail again and discovered a beautiful Japanese garden and pond. The perfect setting for taking some nice outdoor photos, laying out on the grass, or having some zen to yourself.

Distance:
5 miles to Echo Mountain (2.5 up and 2.5 down)
10 miles to Inspiration Point (5 miles and 5 miles down)

Hike through some unique LA history as you churn those legs upward to the Echo Mountain resort ruins. The trail has constant elevation and is a really solid workout. Once you get to the ruins (2.5 miles), take a break, explore the remains, and eat your lunch or snacks here. It is quite enjoyable yelling into the echo phone and hearing your voice reverberate through the mountains - it really carries through clearly!

Now if you want to make this hike special, I HIGHLY recommend going from the ruins and trekking all the way up to Inspiration Point via the Sam Merrill trail or the Castle Canyon (both these entrances are marked with plaques that look identical). This is where the trail gets more isolated, rugged, narrow, and is much steeper! The Sam Merrill trail once you get towards the top, brings you through the backside of mountain where you venture into the shaded wilderness of the woods - really loved this change in the landscape. The Castle Canyon trail ascends up much faster and steeper than its counterpart and is a major workout where you will be huffing and puffing until you get to the top. Be aware of potential mountain bikers trekking down these trails, I was pretty shocked to have 3 of them go by us as the trails were narrow, quite impressive honestly. Once at Inspiration point, soak in the views and lay down before heading back to the trailhead. They have these cool, hollow telescope tubes that are labeled by LA's neighborhoods (silverlake, venice, etc). These aren't actual telescopes but if you had one this would be the perfect time to use it. There are also a good amount of hawks or ravens up here so make sure to gaze and be amazed as they soar around you, I even saw one doing some tricks in the air!

A beautiful mountain hike that is not too far from the city!

Parking: There is free parking at the base of the trailhead.

After 13 years of living in LA I have finally have crossed doing the Runyon hike off my bucket list. It's not necessarily that I was avoiding it, it's just I hate going deep into Hollywood and getting stuck in traffic going back to the Westside. Anyways, this place is GREAT for quick workout. You can walk the trail but you will see alot of people jogging/running, and also doing random exercises. There's usually a good amount of people on this trail and the conversations that you overhear can be so Hollywood and hilarious. I can tell alot of Hollywood entertainment professionals frequent here. This place is very dog friendly as you will notice. Once you get to the top, there is a decent sized park where people sit on the benches and play with their dogs. If I lived in the area I could see myself doing this hike during the week after work. Lots of eye candy here too if you know what I mean.

If you are a looking for a "serious" hike, I wouldn't recommend this but this is a good workout and fun hike that is right in the city.

weird to see the graffiti and smokers but it's a good hike with kids.

Very nice hiking! Beautiful view

very nice view.

trail running

Only ran this once, several years ago during the government shutdown. It was eerie quiet with the campground not in use, and there were deer poking around. A steady up and a steady down, good for training for longer trail races.

exellent!

So beautiful!!!

WAY too crowded. Too many people. Dog crap everywhere and no one picks it up. Trash and crap graffiti. People on the trail don’t have etiquette and will block the whole trail and go slow. Won’t allow others to pass. Waterfall is unimpressive.

October 22: Solo’d to the waterfall and only one wrong turn.

If you can’t get out to real wilderness this will do in a pinch, it’s a pretty easy trail, but it is VERY crowded and parking is a joke.

We clocked in at 5.5 miles. We did it as a sunset hike. We started at 4:20 I think I would have started it at 3:30 so we get the sunset coming back down! You must park on the street there is no parking lot. To get to the top just cross the bridge and stay to the left this app have the correct downloaded road. Dogs are allowed on leash! It does get steep on some parts. There are three benches you pass on the way up. when you pass the Henninger Flats sign there are benches to the left. There is also a geological marker to the left of the sign of your staring at it. Bring a head lamp if your hiking it in the dark! Over all it’s a beautiful sunset hike!

It’s horrible here on the weekend... Lots of trash, dog poop, people making out and people smoking! Never on the weekend again!

Any waterfall because of the rain yesterday?

As soon as you hit the trail you’re climbing switchbacks all the way up until you hit Echo Mountain point. Beautiful views as your climbing and at the top of Echo Mountain. We went up to Inspiration Point thru Castle canyon trail, it’s a challenging trail with plenty of shade and great views. We came down the Sam Merrill Trail from inspiration point, at first it was nice, lovely tress and shade but then it was switchbacks all the way down with full sun exposure and no shade. As challenging as castle canyon trail is I Would definitely do this hike again.

Too many people who spend all morning putting on their face to go hiking. This hike seems more like a fake stars map tour then a hike

If you like a good inclined track this is it. A place to be seen while getting a great up hill walk. One way of course. There are some great views from up top.

Very nice. Plenty of parking, well marked trail, friendly people, beautiful scenery, and nice waterfall at the end.

Did this trail earlier today and it was invigorating to say the least!!! I didn’t know I had a fear of heights until hiking this trail because the path really gets narrow and steep with loose rocks so you really need to watch your step. The views were amazing and the weather was beautiful. I was prepared and had lunch up top at the picnic area where the big house used to be. That view is a must see. Great for those that have some experience and aren’t afraid of heights. Will definitely be back to hike the other trails!

Awesome trail for a great workout

a nice little hike plenty of shade lots of different plant life but not much water this time of year but still worth the trip relatively easy
