Today, December 12th, was my second time hiking this trail. The first time was in July, and I must say that I enjoyed the hike even more today! Saw 90% less hikers, the views were stunning, there was lots of snow in the lake, and way more water flowing down the trail. My regular hiking shows were pretty good for the adventure. The rain and snow just made it more exciting.

chilly but beautiful day hike.

pretty views and great trail for beginner to intermediate hikers

Did the old trail up and new trail down on Friday 12/07. This past week the weather was amazing so the hike was great. Started hitting light snow about 3,400 feet which increased with elevation.
Was all packed down though some parts were a little icy. I went without spikes or poles which would have been nice but not a necessity yet. The old trail up was definitely a challenge. I made it to the mailbox in 1:50 so I was hauling. The way down on the new trail took about 2:25 as I was taking my time but could definitely be done faster. Very rewarding hike!!

Great view at the top. Snow halfway up. Was deep and windy near the top

I hiked up lake 22 on 12/5.

Many parts of the trail was icy. It would be helpful to have spikes.we brought our spikes, but we didn't use them. However, it would have been a lot easier to go up and down certain parts had we had spikes on. The snow around the lake is absolutely beautiful. We walked around the lake, and the snow on a trail was packed.

way to over crowned its like the pumpkin spice latte of hiking.

Great hike! It was chilly today and we didn’t bring enough layers but still very fun!

Hiked to lake 22 today knowing that it is a very popular hike we thought a mid week hike would deter a lot of people. Well we were wrong. We arrived just before 9 and there was only 2 other cars in the parking lot. But on the way back down we ran in to everyone. I was a little underwhelmed by the hike after hearing all the hype. There is about 8 inches of snow once you hit the lake but since it has been so nice out for the past few days the snow is iced over and very compact. Did come across a few places that you had to watch your step because of water frozen over on the trail.

Hiked 2Dec2018, plenty of snow up there. Recommend poles and micro spikes. Road to the TH gets a little sketchy with snow and ice about 2 miles in. Our friends four wheel drive Jeep Cherokee made it up no problem but we passed a few vehicles pulled off prior to the TH. The trail itself was pretty good. Wasnt difficult at all as there's so many switchbacks that they have a pretty level grade. It's STEEP looking down though and there's a few spots towards the top that were pretty nerve racking for my 13 year old. Once we got near the top thr trail took you to nowhere so we ended up back tracking a little and snowshoeing a new trail but we were unable to make a trail to the summit. Maybe if we didn't have kids we would've tried but thr risk reward wasn't there. Stay to the right at thr trees on the top. The way down was easy except for those few spots I mentioned earlier we kept our snowshoes on. Weather was foggy and cloudy so we didn't get much of a view other than the lake below. Still a beautiful hike, highly recommended.

Over crowded trail.

This is a nice trail, but very heavily trafficked (at least on weekends)
If it's not foggy, you can have a clear view of the valley somewhere near the lake. A lot of moss, a few waterfalls and river streams to cross, typical PNW landscape.

The lake is nice, was snowy when we went (Dec. 2nd).

We did this hike on Sunday 12/2 between 10am-2pm, the actual road to the hike was uphill and lots of potholes in the beginning but it does get better and turn into an actual road closer to the top of the trail. Snow on the entire trail, gets a bit deeper closer to the top about 1 inch of snow. Not very crowded, saw more people as we were coming down than going up. The last section of the hike is like a mini rock climb to get to the tower you have to climb up some rocks and then climb the ladder to the tower, bring good snow gear if you plan on going to the very top at this time very cold and icy! Great hike overall, one of our favorites. Bring northwest forest pass!!

Beautiful little hike on a beautiful day! I wasn’t expecting such an awesome view of Rainier within the first hour of the hike. And then Red Mountain which is very unique. Of course the actual Katwalk goes without saying it was truly stunning & unique.

Sadly, two days after we had done this trail there was news that someone had fell. So be careful out there everyone! Happy & safe hiking...

One of my favorites of the Seattle Tinder pic circuit. The views at the top are so so amazing and the hike is a bit challenging.

Very challenging hike. There's other more beautiful hikes in the area, but the workout is worth it for this one.

Great hike all around! Bonus was at the top had several birds eating nuts right out of my hand with snow flurries :)

BEAUTIFUL Hike! Worth the destination AND the journey. There are three ledge lookouts. Most people just stopped at the first before turning back. It's worth hiking another 1/4 mile or so to the next two ledges. the All Trails Topo map makes it easy to find them. I went on a Thursday. There were definitely others on the trail, but not nearly as crowded as it appears to be on the weekend. If I lived in the area, this would be a reocurring hike for me.

Great views

Excellent trail, well maintained. Nice path, very gorgeous view. It was Smokey the day we completed so could have been better, but we did expect that!

We hiked on Saturday (11/24). Road and trail were covered with snow. We parked about 2 miles from the TH and walked up the road. Other cars were able to make it about a mile from the trail head before the snow and ice were too much to continue. The last 200-300 meters before the TH were covered in about a foot of untouched snow. View from the TH was great! Everyone we saw come up after us didn't continue beyond the TH. We continued up the trail, which would be difficult to do without snow shoes and gators/waterproof pants. Without any tracks in front of us and 1 -2 feet of fresh snow, it made for a much tougher hike up. There were points when it was a bit difficult to find the trail and we were definitely glad we had the right gear. Great views all the way up!

Solid climb and nice views, but the soundscape is dominated by I-90 nearly the entire way.

Excellent trail that is great for beginners. As other reviews state it is an extremely busy trail so try to get started as early as possible to get a good spot at the top. If you are so inclined bring a trash bag to help pick up the litter, unfortunately people leave quite a lot of trash at the top.

If you're feeling froggy when you reach the lower ledge keep hiking up another mile or so and you can get to the middle ledge, which is much less crowded and offers the same amazing views. I haven't made it to the highest ledge yet but that's the goal for next time!

Night time hiking trying to break mountaineering boots in. Not a good idea I advise everyone not to try but I did it anyways. This is not my only time going up to check the mail. For as close as a fun hike it is it’s wonderful for conditioning! Old trail up and down this time. The new trail down is about the same time as the old if you do some ruining.

It was a bit crowded but well maintained and beautiful weather on the 50 degree sunny late November day.

My husband and I hiked the trail on Thanksgiving day and was caught in a snow storm. Dropped about 8" of snow on top of the already deep snow. The Katwalk was very windy and icy so we decided to turn around and not chance it. We hiked back to the trail head as it got dark. Beautiful day!

Fantastic view!
