Lots of snow, some yellow now. Knee deep snow in places. Missed a few turns on the way up due to having no clue where the path was and my boyfriend thinking he’s Lewis and Clark status. Made it to the top of Kelly Butte hill, but not the lookout.

Will return in the spring.

trail in great condition. no snow or mud. weather was sunny.

beautiful!!

Easy hike with great views. Go early - before 8am for least crowds, good light and a run.

I hiked up lake 22 on 12/5.

Many parts of the trail was icy. It would be helpful to have spikes.we brought our spikes, but we didn't use them. However, it would have been a lot easier to go up and down certain parts had we had spikes on. The snow around the lake is absolutely beautiful. We walked around the lake, and the snow on a trail was packed.

Beautiful hike! You definitely need snow cleats and a pole, but no snow shoes required. This is a popular trail, so the snow on the trail has been compacted down. We started at 8am and only ran into one group of hikers at the top, but we passed plenty on the way down. I definitely think the snow makes this hike more beautiful! Great hike, even if you're new to winter hiking.

can only get to about 1.5 miles from the trailhead with four-wheel drive there is quite a bit of icy packed snow. went on a really beautiful day and was not disappointed by the views just a little bummed that I didn't get to complete the hike

Hiked to lake 22 today knowing that it is a very popular hike we thought a mid week hike would deter a lot of people. Well we were wrong. We arrived just before 9 and there was only 2 other cars in the parking lot. But on the way back down we ran in to everyone. I was a little underwhelmed by the hike after hearing all the hype. There is about 8 inches of snow once you hit the lake but since it has been so nice out for the past few days the snow is iced over and very compact. Did come across a few places that you had to watch your step because of water frozen over on the trail.

easy with a great view

Amazing peaceful hike. Hiked Friday last week and was snowing heavily. Wore Yaktrax but some steep icy switchbacks near summit so lightweight spikes would have been better. Had to scramble a little and butt slide down parts. Park in Alpental Ski area then walk up road beyond the ‘No vehicles sign’ and the trail is on your right: look for steps.

Overall beautiful. Lots of water crossings so def need waterproof boots.

This is a nice trail, but very heavily trafficked (at least on weekends)
If it's not foggy, you can have a clear view of the valley somewhere near the lake. A lot of moss, a few waterfalls and river streams to cross, typical PNW landscape.

The lake is nice, was snowy when we went (Dec. 2nd).

We did this hike on Sunday 12/2 between 10am-2pm, the actual road to the hike was uphill and lots of potholes in the beginning but it does get better and turn into an actual road closer to the top of the trail. Snow on the entire trail, gets a bit deeper closer to the top about 1 inch of snow. Not very crowded, saw more people as we were coming down than going up. The last section of the hike is like a mini rock climb to get to the tower you have to climb up some rocks and then climb the ladder to the tower, bring good snow gear if you plan on going to the very top at this time very cold and icy! Great hike overall, one of our favorites. Bring northwest forest pass!!

It was a moderate trail. The switchbacks were a bit challenging in damp conditions.

The hike now has snow on the upper half. Bring your mini crampons if you can. Also be prepared for a drastic change in temperature once you reach the top

The road to the trail head is littered with potholes, use caution. The trail register is closed for the season so be sure to let someone know where you are. The trail is very wet. Lots of running water on the tail. Snow made an appearance about 1/4 mile from the lake. There is about 3 inches of snow at the lake and it is starting to ice over. Not many people on the way up we started at 8 am by the time we got back to the car at noon there were no more parking spots. Great hike always one of my favorites

I went there this morning December 1/2018. The the first mile was very easy and my micro spikes were enough. The snow got deeper so I used my snowshoes. It was the perfect day for it.

Beautiful little hike on a beautiful day! I wasn’t expecting such an awesome view of Rainier within the first hour of the hike. And then Red Mountain which is very unique. Of course the actual Katwalk goes without saying it was truly stunning & unique.

Sadly, two days after we had done this trail there was news that someone had fell. So be careful out there everyone! Happy & safe hiking...

Can't get any better than this lake! Gravel road for a few miles before getting to the parking lot. Be prepared for a bumpy road. Come very early coz parking lot gets really full. We got there by 730am and lot was almost full.

I spent the night at Upper Lena Lake a couple years back and loved it! The lake is pristine and the vegetation is renewing.

A moderate hike with waterfalls, views of the valley, and a lake. We went in November and there was little snow. You'll have to go later in the season for consistent snow. It was very cold at the top though! And a bit slick...

Hiked this trail about 10days ago. Largely clear of snow but icy parts around the top of the pass so microspikes or poles would be helpful. The lake was not frozen over when we visited but I suspect it will be soon.
Lovely scenery along the way with the waterfalls. Was perfect for a sunny November day.

There was a lot of snow on road and one map said we were at trail. We decided to park and hike the road to trailhead. 2.5 miles we finally got to trail head. It was a pretty hike in the snow even on the road. It was getting dark so we decided wouldn’t have enough time to do the hike, with walking down road with the cars that still needed to come down. Snow was deep as we got higher. We had spikes so they helped walking the road.

It was a beautiful hike in the snow even though we didn’t make to trail.

Hiked 10/27. missed the beautiful larch colors, but was still an amazing hike. Breathtaking views. Note....drove past trailhead was looking for NF-600. thinking it would be marked as such. It is actually at the Rainy Pass rest stop area.

Arrived early before the sun on Sunday, power hiked up with few moderate pace jogging sections until I reached the talus field. Like others said, spikes would have been great. I was one of those without spikes but did have my trekking poles, that final half mile was a challenge in maintaining traction. But well worth the effort up, amazing views all around and the snow clad trees just made for very good photo opportunities. Was able to maintain a pretty good solid run pace all the way down after clearing the talus field. All in all, just under 4 hours round trip for trail running, considering the 30 minutes up top.

Beautiful in the fall when the mountains are covered in snow. Not too much elevation change and you get big views for a moderate amount of effort. Definitely heavily trafficked on the weekend though!

This was a bucket list hike for me. This hike is by no means easy, it is one of the shortest hikes I have done all year with the longest for me drive time. The road is washed out so you have to hike two or 3 miles to the trailhead. I did this hike in October 2018. I'm glad I did this hike but definitely not one of my favorite hikes of the year. The trail is very narrow and steep up hill until you get to the first lake where it flattens out a bit. Before you get to the first lake you have to crawl over a 6ft or so rock wall. to get to blanca lake (which is a day use only area) it is a steep, treacherous descent. I saw a lot of people on this trail mainly when I was leaving and a couple who didn't think the trail was going to be that hard. When i visited in October there was ice at the lake and the shores of the lake were a lot on the stinky side. This place is very beautiful, but very hard hiking. There is a bathroom at the true trailhead, but it was locked when I visited due to the road washout. Bring lots of water, snacks and electrolytes, you will definitely need it. I would not recommend this trail for anyone new to hiking, families or anyone out of shape.

Amazing hike! The moderate rating is justified due to the elevation gain, flooded areas, and trees/roots on the trail. Had snow at the lake which made for beautiful photos, would definitely recommend to others and doing it again.

the trail to bridge is a flat walk until last 1000ft, this is a easy hike
