Did this short lovely hike today with my dog and 2 year old. My 2 year old needed help in spots because it was steep and muddy therefore slippery in spots but enjoyable still. He loved splashing in the water by the falls.

A great short walk, that is absolutely beautiful. Loved the many moss covered trees over hanging the cascading falls and bubbling brooks, well as calm pools of water that greet you on this serene walk through nature’s backdoor. Can’t wait to go back again in the winter wonderland and beauty of springtime.

When you start the trail you will have a quick choice. To the left, trail meanders up hill and around, to the right straight up the stairs. Serious stairs, so unless your in descent shape, go the other way and come down them.

Finished Summit 11/17, just days before road closures to be set. It was a beautiful clear day with amazing views that make the strenuous climb worth it. Had micro spikes on and took ice axe just in case but didn’t need it really. Summit is tough in November but not technical. Take plenty of water, I didn’t and regretted it.

Loads of bugs, loose soil on the way up makes the climb difficult, but the view from the top is worth it. We were fortunate to be hiking this trail during the "California Tortoiseshells" migration; Thousands of butterflies swarmed us near the peak.

I did this with two friends on October 26, 2018. We are all in our mid thirties. It was a bluebird day with not a cloud in the sky, and I think it was probably averaged around 40-45 degrees for the entire day. The summit was above freezing for sure when we summited at noon.

Timing:
We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Lone Pine the night before and the night after the hike. We got on the trail at 3 a.m. and summited right around noon. We started our decent at 1 p.m. and got back to the trailhead at 8 p.m. So that’s 9 hours up and 7 hours down.

Dealing with Altitude:
I live in Salt Lake City, so I have access to some elevation and did a bunch of training hikes to 11,000 feet on the weekends to get used to the altitude. The two other guys live at sea level but did their best to hike as much as they could before our attempt. We all ended up getting prescriptions for acetazolamide and starting cycling on that and 400-600 milligrams of ibuprofen every six hours starting about 12 hours before we started out. For two of us, we really had no symptoms of altitude sickness beyond very mild headaches at the top. The other guy got a pretty decent headache that subsided during our decent.

Food:
I think we all ate much less food than I thought we would. I ate two sleeves of Clif Bar Shot Bloks and took a caffeine pill on the way up (which might have contributed to an upset stomach). And I also ate 4-5 Clif Bars, some beef jerky, a pretty good-sized bag of gummy bears, and some nuts. I brought I peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I never even ate, but the other two guys ate their PB & J at the summit.

Water:
I brought four liters of liquid with me. Three liters of water and one liter of Gatorade. My doctor told me to drink a sports drink with the acetazolamide. I ended up drinking 2 liters of the water and the Gatorade and gave the rest of the water to my hiking buddies on the way down. We actually got back to the parking lot with nothing to drink between us all, which is probably not the smartest play. I did bring a filter with me though just in case things got real out there.

Gear:
We all used adjustable hiking poles. We have backup batteries for our headlamps since a good amount of the hike was in the dark. Sun lotion. I had a wide-brimmed hat for the sun. I had four layers on the top and three on my legs and was overdressed for most of the day. I was prepared for the day to be 10 degrees colder than it was. We all had microspikes, but I think I was the only one who used them.

Overall:
The 99 switchbacks might get you down, but once you top out after those, you are pretty golden. That where the trail gets super interesting and the views are ridiculous. The only thing I might do different if I did this again was to try to move a bit faster to get down before dark since spirits were running low for the last couple miles of the decent. I loved this trail. Very well maintained and there were informational signs (Ecology, geology facts) at most of the switchbacks. There was snow at the end of the trail; you had to cross it to get to the peak, but it was easy. Would definitely do this again. I was there in August 2018 and it was smoky, you could just barely see the top of Mount Shasta peaking out from a layer of smoke.

If you can break this up into two days do it. We day hiked it, left at 2am and back by 6pm. Super long day. Camped at Alabama Hills on the way out.

Great hike. It was a little longer, but worth every step. The most beautiful hike I’ve ever done. Go early in the morning to be beat the crowds. Brings at least 2 L of water if you’re an experienced hiker. Go all the way to the top! Definitely bring proper gear, food & plenty of water.

moderate to hard hike..harder on descent then cardio on way up as a lot of shale on trail..where as elevation gain is gradual..thighs will feel it on way down..trekking poles not my thing at this stage..but be sure of footing due to rocks..couple spots trail does somewhat disappear..but not hard to rediscover..fantastic weather for mid November and great views..at summit as well as ridgeline at start along fallen leaf lake..couple smaller lakes along way up for h20..but overall I would rate it moderate..and Jessie hope u were ok on descent..

Challenging hike. Wear proper gear and bring food, and water. When hiking in the fall or winter, start early or you will be hiking in the dark. It can take 5 to 7 hours to complete for an average hiker while taking time to appreciate the views of Lake Tahoe, Fall Leaf Lake and the surrounding evergreen forests

Great place, lots of variety in the trails as well as the scenery. Hiked along the gravel road going in to Jawbone Flats, (lots of old abandoned mining equipment all along the trail) then continued to Opal Pool and came back along the trail through the forest which connects back to the gravel road.
Since I am new to hiking this last part is for those that are also just getting started, or consider this a long hike. The gravel road is relatively flat, but the section through the woods had some short but steep climbs over rocky terrain. The path is pretty narrow and has some long drop offs in several areas. Don't let that scare you off though, I'm on the older end of the scale and new to hiking and found it all very manageable.
Believe my mileage would have been closer to the 6.5 than what was experienced by Stacy if I had taken the gravel road in and back out and stopped at Jawbone Flats. Adding Opal Pool and taking the route though the forest definitely increased my mileage.
All Trails recorded me at 8.4 miles total.
Most likely due to the weather conditions at the moment, the road leading in wasn't bad at all, even a sedan should be able to make it all the way to the trailhead.

I did this on 11-12. It was very difficult and snow/ice were everywhere after the first mile. If you’re going to attempt it have an ice axe and crampons. It was super sketchy coming down with the snow melting and soft. The views were first rate and incredible at the top but be prepared.

I didn’t hike all the way to Snow Valley, just went 8 miles as an out and back. Very few people out this time of year, we saw 5 people on foot and 5 people on horseback. The views of Tahoe were all seen as glimpses through the trees, but still a very beautiful hike.

Gorgeous views at the end and at Clouds Rest. Went on a Wed in November and only saw 5 people.

Took less than 7 hours excluding lunch. I’m fit but not in hiking at altitude shape.
-4 hours up and i took lots of mini breaks.
-2.5 hours down without stopping.

Decent AT&T reception at a couple of spots on the way. Solid reception at Clouds Rest.

as of today no snow. great views. took 5 hrs and 45 minutes round trip. highly recommend the hike

One of my favorite hikes! It’s beautiful the whole time you’re hiking, lots of flowers, wild life, and water (ponds, creeks). Definitely a harder hike but well worth it.

Very nice hike! Not to hard and a beautiful view of the park and the lakes at the top!

Not much to see on the way there...nothing spectacular BUT when you get to Cloud's Rest, it's like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Views are amazing. We had lunch at the top. It was so nice.

We did this hike 11/12/18 If you are coming from the south, (Cottage Grove side) Rd. 1751 is closed due to a landslide about 2 miles before the trailhead, you can park at the road closure and hike the road up to the trailhead. This turns the hike into an almost 7 1/2 miler. If you want to stay with just hiking the Mt. June trail itself, I would come in from the north side.

Very difficult. I am in shape, but still took me a long time to reach the summit. Worth every bit of it though, the views from the top are unlike any other. Best hike in Oregon for sure

enjoyed this climb a lot! An plan on doing it again soon for better time now that I know the trail. pretty well beaten path, and when I went there was a good bit of water on the trail, early August, but totally with it 12hr up an down ... I can get that into the single digits though ;)

Great trail. I want to go back in the winter or spring.

This was my first hike when I moved to Oregon in 2016. I hiked one week before the fire. I will always cherish this trail as my favorite.

This trail is amazing!! The bottom is really ugly due to fire debris, but mid way to the top its sooo beautiful. Perfect pine trees, bushes, fields, its soo beautiful. At the too you have a 360* view of the tahoe basin and reno! Its a spectacular view. This trail goes to the first meadow, which is so pretty! I cried when I saw it because it was so perfect with the small breeze on the wheat. This is where you should turn around and go back. Unless you want more...

I was so motivated to see the second field that I kept going, I was as pleased with the second field as much as the first. It was really really big and there is a makeshift wood dam in the middle which is wild to look at!

At this point I was debating whether to go back or just continue to Florinston, CA. I decided to continue, it was worth it. There were so many cool views and amazing fields. Most of it is downhill, and in either fields of bushes or birch forests. I did not regret it one bit. It was really really neat and I would have regretted it if I didn’t go.

Overall, it took me 11 hours for a 20 mile hike. I am experienced so it may take you longer depending on your skill, and of course the environment (snow, ice, etc...) It was pretty rocky and extremely isolated, I only saw one family in a ATV. Keep this in mind, I recommend bringing a partner, there are cyotes and mountainlions, although I did not encounter any, I saw alot of tracks. The trails are pretty spot on and exact. The fields by Florinston are very pretty and open. I highly recommend this trail, its one of the prettiest I have been on.

Prepare for a long hike, with about 3,000 in elevation gain. Be safe and take care!

Insane day up at South Sister. Snow covered 95% of trail and I was only able to reach the summit because I brought an ice ax and crampons. I would not attempt the last 200 ft without at least an ice ax.

Hiked Iron Mountain last week and the view was worth the work. Pack a lunch and enjoy.

Hiked up past Moraine Lake today for lunch and views. Was nice to be in the snow and get another hike in before it gets too snowy. Was fine with hiking shoes and poles. Mostly snow covered starting about 1/2 mile in from the trailhead.
