Bring microspikes in winter months.

Went up when it was frozen over with some friends. It's tough getting up and back down with all the snow, but so worth it. Some people hike up and sled / snowboard down. You get to walk around on a big frozen lake once you make it all the way. Really awesome.

Did this trail out and back via shadow canyon on 3/13. In my opinion, it's a pretty uninteresting trail from a view and geological standpoint until the last 0.3 miles, but what it lacks in beauty it makes up for in physical challenge. Trail was completely clear of snow and pretty dry !

Very beautiful. Easy terrain. Limited parking.

Parked and hiked a bit, walked back and drove to the next parking spot. Hiked a bit again. Gorgeous, paved trails.

Fun day hike! Only downside would be the amount of dog poop everywhere.

Interesting boulders on the way up, easy scramble for the last 100 feet to the summit, great views the entire way. We descended via Fern Canyon, which is much steeper than the ascent via Shadow Canyon. Fern Canyon brings you closer to larger formations, then you can use the Mesa Trail to get back to the parking area. Microspikes needed in late February.

Beautiful day for a hike! It was a bit muddy and icy but with micro-spikes, we were good. Slipped a few times but we laughed it off. Lots of people on the trail, likely due to the weather. Took us about 4 hours at an easy, steady pace with a small dog.

Yaktrax were needed. The falls are still frozen but was a great hike.

Very easy, beautiful hike. If you’re looking for something non strenuous and short this is a good one. Fun to sled down the hill in the winter too!

We hiked this on Sunday afternoon and it was windy, cold, and awesome. Be advised that there is . $5 fee to park in the nearby lots as they are on private land. Cash and checks are the only form of payment accepted. There are two lots, on one to the north and one to the south of the trail head. It's a quick walk to the top, just keep to the main trail and avoid what look to be off road vehicle trails that veer off to the right. I think there are two on the way up. The top was WINDY. I'm guessing around 50mph gusts and a steady wind of about 30mph. The kind of wind you can lean into and it will keep you upright. The temp was around 9 degrees and with the those kind of winds we didn't stay up too long- we didn't have the gear necessary to hang out in conditions like that. But it was beautiful up there. We shall definitely return for more exploration!

Combination of paved and gravel trails surrounding and through the park and gorgeous rock formations. Not terribly crowded on a chilly February morning, but the views would be worth a visit even in the busier summer months.

This was a beautiful hike however be aware that the road (county road 7 I believe) is closed. The last 4.4 miles of driving become walking. Also the snow was very deep (up to my waist at points) so bring snowshoes. It was still beautiful but be warned that this 8 mike hike is a 17 mike hike in the winter!

It’s great if you’re looking for a relatively easy trail with great views. The trail was a little packed down for snowshoes, but slick enough that you’d be better off with a bit of extra traction. Just be prepared for a lot of wind at the lake.

Lovely and pleasant 2.5hour walk through the forest, so quiet and peaceful. Didn’t come across too many people. Path was mostly good although some areas rather icy - we managed with good walking shoes but would recommend stabilizers. Not that strenuous, but a good bit of exercise!

Today was a beautiful day with great views of all of the snow caped peaks in their full glory. Shadow Canyon was ok on the way up but Fern Canyon was very slick. My micro spikes made it fine but my hiking partner was experimenting with creative descents in the slickest spots.

good hike, yaktrax helped a lot with ice

Perfect weather for hiking! We took Shadow Canyon on the way up--steep but doable without microspikes (2/4 of us had a pair). The views at the top are stunning; it is a pretty narrow clamber to the peak and benefits from microspikes. We lucked out and got a half hour without wind, too. The way down we took Fern Canyon and definitely should have had more microspikes, it was pretty brutal slipping and sliding down packed snow/ice all the way down, and once we hit the Mesa Trail section it was very muddy. All in all though a gorgeous hike and well worth the effort!

Only needed our snowshoes for the last .5 miles of the trail - everything else was packed down enough that our boots were just fine! Otherwise, absolutely beautiful hike.

Snowshoed to the lake today and part way up to glacier. Lots of snow still, very windy. Beautiful views! Everyone says it's easy but felt it a bit challenging for us Minnesotans (but the cold didn't bother us), maybe since we are still adjusting to elevation. It was a steady climb to the lake and steeper to the glacier. Want to make a trip back in Spring or Summer. Ran into several people even on a Thursday afternoon.

Hiked today with cramp ons! It was a great day! Trail was icy but with the cramps it was perfect! Nice workout

Nice variation between easy portions with more challenging sections, especially once you cross the first stream. The trail had a layer of snow, but not enough to need traction devices. Great views once you get to the top of the ridge, would definitely recommend!

Traction would have been nice, but not necessary. A go to when you only have an hour of free time to get in a good view.

Road is clear until the next snow, never even considered using 4WD. Brought up 8 people and a bunch of sleds, and had a blast! Ended up sledding down the glacier onto the frozen lake, sleds are a must here if you're up for the adventure!

Great short hike. Plenty of amazing views. Bring a lunch and stay awhile, highly recommend for kids and dogs.

A lot of choices for trails, great views, very dog friendly. I keep going back.

This trail was a lot of fun in the snow! It was beautiful. The trail changes elevation often during the loop and gives a good workout.

This trail was an awesome moderate hike! Awesome for the kind you want to do leisurely and chat with your pals. Not a lot of outstanding, spectacular views like some of those Colorado hikes, but beautiful nonetheless. Highly recommended if you want do have a nice hike in the woods.

Hello. We are thinking about doing this hike tomorrow (Jan 27). Does anyone know if we will need snow shoes? TIA!
