Very fun and challenging hike, you will feel like a baby deer walking down it though!

Easy for the first half getting harder for the other half. But when u reach the top is feel so great

if you are out of shape this hike will kill you lol

Did this hike 21 April 2018 with some friends took us 7 hours it was rainy and muddy and being very careful along the crater ridgeline. A lot of people did not continue on to the crater they just did waterfalls and turned around. Which in my honest opinion is more sketchy to climb down those waterfalls than to continue around the crater. This hike is not a easy hike so I would not recommend small children or the elderly. They are some sketchy areas for sure. But we all had a big smile on our faces when we completed the hike and was grateful and humble to come out in one piece!!!

4.2 mile out and back. Great workout at the end. Some stairs but no ropes. Some washed out steps due to last heavy rains. Bring water, snacks, micro spikes and rain gear. Shorts ok as trail in great shape.

I appreciate this spot only as a workout. The view at the top was good, but other than that nothing really to see.

easy. little walk into the ☁

A fun workout hike! Views make it worth it

Aloha! I do various guided hikes with photos on Oahu. I hike often/weekly. Hiking this weekend. Feel free to check out some examples of photos on my instagram @mike.karas. You can message me there or at mikekarasphotography@gmail.com

So many stairs! But a great view and sense of accomplishment.

Quite muddy and a bit challenging up the third waterfall... but the best hike we’ve done in Oahu so far!

We love this hike! We do it whenever we come home. It's not good to do when it's hot and the there's a lot more erosion between the railroad ties than there used to be. The view at the top is pretty and the breeze is relaxing. My kid has been able to do this hike since he was 5.

If you want to climb the sides of waterfalls and hike thru the jungle, look no further.

We cut out the crater by taking the shortcut, because the summit was socked in with clouds when we went. Just be ready for a long hike -- especially if you plan on doing the whole thing.

Starts just to the right when walking toward Pali Lookout. Don't let the distance and elevation of this hike deceive you into thinking its quick and easy. Its steep with elements of rock climbing mixed in. I would recommend leaving this one alone if it's raining or just rained. That being said, one of the coolest hikes you can do on a nice day!

A fun hike that is well marked, easy to follow and gradually builds until the top. Decent elevation for sightseeing for those looking to get good views and gradual enough to trail run or bring the dogs. For those not looking to do a difficult trail, but still wanting the feel and great views of the Hawaiian rainforest, this hike is an excellent choice.

Awesome views. Quite tiring not so much the difference but from the scaling. One of the best trails in Ohau.

waited all week for a clear day to climb chimney to k1. unfortunately weather wasn't on my side. hiked to notch 1 in the rain and wind. hard hike with the weather but worth it even without the best views.

Very challenging. Between the thick mud, wading thru the water and climbing the slippery rocks, you'll definitely find the challenge you are looking for. We went the entire route, up through all 3 beautiful falls to the crater ridge and around. (Fortunately there are ropes on the more challenging areas.) Beautiful view of the island at the top. We then came down a different trail to avoid climbing back down thru the water falls. Again, extremely muddy but wow, what a hike! A big beer is a definite must at the end!!

amazing experience, what a beautiful island, trail was fairly difficult but challenging, had to stop quite a few times, and the last ridge trail to the top was dangerously exciting, A+

Steep trail, definitely not an easy one. But you’re so immersed in how gorgeous it is, that nothing else matters. Slippery when wet. :-)

It is an arduous upward hike but the fellow hikers make it fun.

I’ll climb the stairs Wed, April 11th for the 239th time.

The most recent post on my Instagram @Hawaii_Mountain.Man.Matt will give you an idea for an impactful photo perspective.

5 things you should know about the hike:

(1) It is the safest way to reach that elevation on Oahu.

Over the last 70+ years, no one has ever died falling on the stairs*.

(2) There is a ton of trash at the top.

Bring a folded heavy-duty trash bag to help with that.

(3) No matter what, don’t go near homes!

Think: when is the last time you woke up at 3am and whispered: "Honey I think there's someone outside the house!"

Two people have recently been shot on the street by a high powered air rifle fired near the intersection of Kuneki and Makena. That was wrong of the shooter, but also not surprising.

(4) The back way is more dangerous, but worth considering.

Near the base of the stairs, there is one unmarked Honolulu Police Department vehicle roaming to catch hikers.

After the November 12th escape of killer Randall Saito from the mental facility behind the neighborhood, security is on best behavior using off-road vehicles to apprehend hikers.

On a usual morning, a roving HPD officer, a stationary guard and two roving guards secure the area.

The penalty has some variables, but here are the components:

(1) $1,000 fine
(2) Jail, no longer than 6 months. (incarnation is rare)
(3) Legal fees (a defense attorney charges $800 - $1,500 for the case)
(4) Usually 80 hours of community service.
(5) Legal fees for expungement.
(6) Visa/Immigration hurdles
(7) Impact on professional life.
(8) Return travel and accommodations to attend court, community service, etc.

The setback ranges from $3,000 for simple cases, up into the hundreds of thousands over the length of a career for military members reduced in rank, folks who lose their security clearance or a professional license, etc.

Going up the front way, as amazing as it is, is not worth playing Russian roulette with the penalty, so don’t “just risk the ticket”.

Have a plan

Tip:

‘Three routes through the bamboo forest’ would be where I’d be if I were looking to catch you. Just saying.

It's a short but hard hike. It isn't dangerous and a nice hike. Must-do in Oahu.

Not bad, but crowded and too many people trying to run the trail.

Trail is a “rail road” with washed out sections between ties. Not exactly easy walking when concerned about footing most of the way... probably why it has a Hard rating. Otherwise, not too difficult (my 7yr old daughter made it).

Nice views at the top.

We did the hike on an overcast/misty day. Couldn’t imagine trying this on a sunny day as there is no shade.

Tougher than it looked, worth it tho for the views and breeze at the top.

It has it all.. mud is a slight issue so timing is a worthwhile consideration.

Bonne randonnée mais nous nous sommes un peu perdus car les indications dans la trail sont absentes. Nous avons pris un chemin dédié aux 4 roues! Finalement on a marché presque 15 km. En descendant les roches sont glissantes lorsqu'il pleut.

Did this trail today via Seven Bridges Trail. Becareful this way we ended up getting lost for a good hour to an hour and a half.

Super muddy because of the rain. Yellow bamboo, several stream crossings, climbing boulders. Only climbed the first falls. It wasn't too bad.

Hard, but worth it! Some sketchy areas but nothing too bad. Lots of people as well.

It is a wonderful hike with amazing views. We have gone there few weeks ago, was very muddy. But so much fun! Must worn, IT IS NOT A 5 MILES HIKE!!! IT IS 9 MILES. So be prepared for a long walk with multiply stream crossings, climbing up the waterfall and the summit, multiply thing ridges. Bring lots of water and snacks. Took us about 6 hours. Very fun hike. Highly recommend.
