Great views even though we were stuck in a cloud at the top. Really fun hike. Slippery in a few spots.

Did this hike today with my infant on my back in a backpack and my 4 year old. my wife and mother in law also made the trek. my gps had the distance of this hike at 1.2 miles so not sure about the 1.9 listed on this, maybe the trail went further but I thought I hit the top/last pillbox. very nice views, very close to the edge of the cliff, keeps your kids in arms reach.

Aloha! I do various guided hikes with photos on Oahu. I hike often/weekly. I hiked this past week and this weekend and will be hiking this week Thursday and this weekend as well. Feel free to check out some examples of photos on my instagram @mike.karas. You can message me there or at mikekarasphotography@gmail.com

Actually stayed on the marked trail and not this one. The map at the top shows 2 trails. Numbered 1 & 2. This hike is number 2 and it looked like the trailhead was down the road where the sign says 4x4 vehicles only.

One of my favorite. It’s a moderate hike but you can take the kiddos. Make sure you bring water with you and your camera ready to take spectacular pics!

I’ll climb the stairs Fri, Mar 23rd for the 234th time.

The most recent post on my Instagram @Hawaii_Mountain.Man.Matt will give you an idea for an impactful photo perspective.

5 things you should know about the hike:

(1) It is the safest way to reach that elevation on Oahu.

Over the last 70+ years, no one has ever died falling on the stairs*.

(2) There is a ton of trash at the top.

Bring a folded heavy-duty trash bag to help with that.

(3) No matter what, don’t go near homes!

Think: when is the last time you woke up at 3am and whispered: "Honey I think there's someone outside the house!"

Two people have recently been shot on the street by a high powered air rifle fired near the intersection of Kuneki and Makena. That was wrong of the shooter, but also not surprising.

(4) The back way is more dangerous, but worth considering.

Near the base of the stairs, there is one unmarked Honolulu Police Department vehicle roaming to catch hikers.

After the November 12th escape of killer Randall Saito from the mental facility behind the neighborhood, security is on best behavior using off-road vehicles to apprehend hikers.

On a usual morning, a roving HPD officer, a stationary guard and two roving guards secure the area.

The penalty has some variables, but here are the components:

(1) $1,000 fine
(2) Jail, no longer than 6 months. (incarnation is rare)
(3) Legal fees (a defense attorney charges $800 - $1,500 for the case)
(4) Usually 80 hours of community service.
(5) Legal fees for expungement.
(6) Visa/Immigration hurdles
(7) Impact on professional life.
(8) Return travel and accommodations to attend court, community service, etc.

The setback ranges from $3,000 for simple cases, up into the hundreds of thousands over the length of a career for military members reduced in rank, folks who lose their security clearance or a professional license, etc.

Going up the front way, as amazing as it is, is not worth playing Russian roulette with the penalty, so don’t “just risk the ticket”.

Have a plane

‘Three routes through the bamboo forest’ would be where I’d be if I were looking to catch you. Just saying.

We did this hike in the rain, took us a little over 2 hours. The first part of the hike ‘’jungle’’ is great, muddy, peaceful, amazing trees. Second part, ‘’rocky climb’’ is not bad, I think that you would have great valley views if it was a nice day. Third part, the ‘’post apocalyptic road’’ was cool, yet disappointing that you cover such a large distance on pavement.

Wow, the upper cave area is a steep climb and not for the novice. Wear good shoes, NO flops. The views are awesome. The lower cave is really fun to explore, gotta have your wits about you if going in the belly of the mountain.

Nice beach trail, the climb was really fun and the views amazing.

Super wet today, still made it up though. A little difficult getting down. Will definitely do it again next week.

Love this trail. Challenging at times but lots of nice pathed straight-aways, cool trees and plants that provide shade and epic views of the city. Basically you end up hiking in the clouds! Highly recommend but wouldn’t bring small children, I saw two families that had to turn around. It’s definitive not the easiest hike but worth the effort for the beautiful views / photographs! Good work out, too!

Great short hike with incredible views!

Tired of the monotony of getting dirty and having near death experiences trying to reach some jaw dropping view? This peaceful and beautiful walk through the woods can help break that up. Sadly there was not as much garbage to pick up as I'm used to, until detouring over to the 'Ualaka'a loop, where people seem to find it a more suitable environment to leave their trash behind. Say hello to the cats and chickens living in harmony in the parking lot.

Easy hike and spectacular view!!!

Great hike! Definitely agree with some of the reviewers that rec. to go right to start with the steep uphill climb. At the top before going down definitely rec. to take the Moleka Trail. It’s a great out and back trail through a bamboo forest.

This hike is great as long as you go in the correct trail! We accidentally went in the first trail but it’s the second one!! Rewarding views for a fairly short incline...put our spikes on halfway up and it made all the difference in gripping the crumbly ground and rocks! Highly recommend for that part!

Forgot to start all trails on this hike but it was fun.

Really fun trail. Not too long, but steep in places. The views of the valley and shoreline from the top are worth it. The bunkers along the ridge line provide a neat link to the WWII history of the island.

Did this hike in the afternoon on a cool March day. When you start, a local homeowner told us to hug the fence to the left. There is a trail over there but it was super overgrown and multiple branches of the trail. Once you get up to the ridge it is much clearer. The bulk of the hike was out in the sun and would be HOT in the summer. The end of the hike was awesome
And nothing beats that view. There were some folks up there camping as there is some flat areas near the top.

I will totally bring my kids back to Don’t another time (my kids are ages 11 - 3).

This hike has been on my list for quite a while and we finally did it today! It was a bit overcast with significant wind but the trail was dry. We got there at 9am on a Thursday and we were the only ones up there until we started to head down. Trail head is easy to find, look for the danger sign in the bamboo tree line behind the bus parking at the lookout. Pass the sign and start heading up. There are many options along the trail to cut into the trees if you don’t want to walk the ridge. We walked a bit of the ridge and a bit in the trees on the way to the Puka and completely along the ridge on our way back down. It’s amazing views and as long as you watch where you are walking it’s safe. The Puka could be missed if you don’t know what to look for, we seen 1 woman up there that was lost an went right passed the Puka. When you come up to a large rock face, go down it and that is the Puka. The trail actually goes up over it and you can’t see it. Parking is $3.00 for tourists and free for residents and military. Nice, quick and slightly technical hike. We did the Puka and crouching lion in 1 day.

Awesome bunker trail! Short but steep. Saw a lot of kids on the trail. Simply amazing views from the bunkers and summit. Glad to have found this gem!

my wife and i plan to hike the Haiku stairs next week (3/12-16/2018). It will be the first time for us. I have read lots of reviews and comments and have done some research but i am sure it will be a lot more to find out once we are there. Please give us any last minute tips and advises. Appreciate.

Puka was pretty small but the views are magnificent! Stayed by the ridge the whole time. started at the right side of the fence coming from the Makapu'u Lookout parking lot.

I am looking to do this hike on April 30th. This is most likely to be the hardest hike I have ever done. I would love to have my wife with me but she isn’t sure if she can do it. ¿Is it really that hard? Can anyone share a video of what the hardest part looks like? Pm email: carlosh822@gmail.com

Tough hike with all the mud. But cool waterfall, and good swimming hole.

Long and tough one...but so worth it! The most beautiful hike I have taken, by far! Recommend brining either chacos or water proof boots because you walk through quite a few streams during the beginning. Then strap on spikes are highly recommended for the strenuous climbing towards the end.
