The ascent up Sand Ridge Trail can be difficult, but beautiful views from the top. Beautiful and not heavily trafficked.

Easy and gorgeous trail

amazing hike, minimal traffic

Great 4 day hike. Late start camp at Island Lake, 5 Lakes via Sand Ridge, Glacier Lake, Round Lake, out. 5 adults, 2 kids. Meteors.

Great hike! Just be watchful of bears. We spotted one about 15/20 feet from us while doing the hike not even half way in.

I loved this hike! Took my boyfriend for his birthday and it was lovely, BUT it was horrible the way back because we did not bring enough water. Please bring more than you think you need!!

The falls itself were very refreshing. As for the trail, we took a different route to the falls. Right off of freeway 80 in Auburn, we took Forest hill road which leads us to Lake Clamentine road. This is more hard than the normal trail as it loses elevation pretty quickly and coming back up is fairly hard, of course if you are on foot (and we were, and it was not fun coming back up!). There is parking right off of the falls but I think it is only for people who bring their boats, and it is small which fills up quickly on a weekend.

Great trail! Smokey from the fires but still pretty! We will be back to backpack in and stay a night. Easy trail too!

Great demanding trail and not for the faint of heart. I’m just starting to get back in shape and this trail really challenges me. Due to time constraints and my current capabilities I took the shortcut using the Pig Farm Trail route which made it about 1.5 mile hike round trip.

This place is getting trashed unfortunately. Would be helpful to try clean up the area. We filled the only bag we had but still had to leave with a ton behind. This place/waterfall was more beautiful when there wasn’t graffiti everywhere.

Echoing other reviews, the road in is a bit rough but the trail is great and moderately challenging in difficulty. We had great views that were hindered by the smoke from all the fires. I definitely concur with the earlier reviewer’s recommendation to return via the windswept Sand Ridge trail. It gives you great views all around.

Very nice fairly easy hike. Lots of great side trails down to the river. Enjoyed a quick dip to cool off. It was very enjoyable and I will be back.

nice easy trail. nice scenery . water is clear and cool to jump in for a dip after your hike. easy walk for whole family. best do do early morning to have a an easy hike . highly recommended.

It is an enjoyable trail, I was a little disappointed to see vehicle traffic upon reaching the lake, access to the lake is almost non existant by foot. I will definelty take the hike to the swimming holes next time. Parking is pretty bad as well. That's to be expected. It is a beautiful area.

The hike/walk to the waterfall was very nice, we got there later than we wanted to, we got there at 10:30AM. It’s definitely up to you and your enjoyment but due to the heat and very little shade, I recommend getting there earlier. But the sun did feel very nice on my skin ☀️ and don’t forget your sunblock. We took the upper trail that lead to the waterfall. It took us a little over an hour to get to the waterfall then we climbed our way down to swimming hole. The waterfall was very nice but the scenery to the river was gorgeous! I could have spent forever there. One more thing, if you decide to take your pet(s) please check the weather, go as early as possible, and take a lot of water. We ran into a few very hot and dehydrated pets. Fortunately my friend was a genius and brought quite a few water bottles with her that we were able to give water away to them. Please be safe.

Pretty view and steady elevation but kinda boring just walking so long with little to stop and explore the higher you go up the hill

The final 2.5 mile drive to the base of this canyon- and where the trailhead begins- is difficult to drive. There is not any true designated parking area, so most vehicles just park along the side of this dirt road. There is a sign next to the bridge & bathrooms directing you toward Codfish Falls Trail, which we set out on and hiked for about 45 minutes before we came to a very dry creek bed and a bunch of homemade stick signs pointing us to go back

Does anyone know exactly what you are supposed to do when you get to river level? The trail map shows the trail going quite a bit past this point, but I couldn't really find a trail either time. Is it map wrong, are you supposed to climb through the rocks, or is there another trail hidden somewhere?

I did this hike in the early April and again in late July. Great hike both times, but it was definitely better in the spring when there are wildflowers, more water flowing, and it is quite a bit cooler. I started around 7:30 AM both times. Hike down to the river was pretty easy...and I didn't think the hike back was too bad, except for the increase in heat and a few points that were a little strenuous.

This trail had beautiful views of the river and had it not been for the heat wouldn't have been too hard. Bring plenty of water. Parking is free but the lot is pretty small.

Beautiful hike, uphill on the way in which I'm sure is why it's rated moderate. Beautiful views, wide trail- I will do it again in the cooler weather.

great spot. great lakes. great swim. great hike. great view. cows.

Disappointed trail turns into asphalt

If you’re not going Swimmin go elsewhere

Kinda just went and did it. Wish we had prepared for the hike. Went @halfway to river and headed back. Well be back to finish. Gorgeous landscapes... just when you’ve had enough exposure you’re blessed with shade.

I don’t see how you can do better than this hike. You have multiple lakes, forests, stunning views, rocks of different colors and types, flowers, butterflies. And all in six miles with only moderate climbing. Highly recommended. The road to Carr Lake is challenging but our Ford Cmax made it - we just stopped a few hundred feet before the parking lot when the bumps got a bit more than we could handle.

Very enjoyable. Half shade, half sun.

Great final descent section of what is becoming known as a mountain biking destination for NorCal. Just have to watch out for the hikers that are unaware this is predominantly used by mountain bikers.

Still one of my favorites!! Tried some new trails this year and finally got back to this one for the first time this season! It's perfect for all fitness levels. I usually run it and feel safe doing so. The bikers are courteous and usually make their presence known! It is pretty much all brown now, but still lovely. Half sun and half shade. Some poison oak, but the trail is clean, clear and well marked!

Amazing trail. Highly recommended for those looking to build speed and gives amazing scenic views.

Easy hike and absolutely stunning views. Spectacular trail since it is all the way by the river. Waterfall and rainbow are breathtaking. Will be back on Fall or Spring. In Summer I would say do early morning.

Our second trip to Penner lake. The road is still pretty rough getting to the trail head but it's worth it! We had a great trip, although it seems like it's becoming more and more of a party spot. 1998's Eve 6 blasting through a stereo at 1AM seems to be kind of missing the point of the place.
