Climbed 11/11/18 - If you regularly climb high peaks like me then you will barely get warmed up by the time your standing on the summit. That said this mountain is great for certain experiences. For example, I hiked this during a mellow snow storm with 6 inches of snow on the ground and it provided a magical experience to share with my wife (which is what we wanted). This is a fantastic hike, to take someone who doesn't do big hikes, for a quick but beautiful experience.

Great hike! You definitely won't have crazy views of the mountains as a lot of the reviews below point out, but you will still definitely get your nature fix. Microspikes helped a lot as some parts were both steep and icy. Not a great trail for dogs because of how steep it gets in spots.

While there is nothing spectacular about this trail it was a good one to do during a decent snow. The trail was still fairly easy to follow even though no on had been on it since the snow. Keep in mind that no matter which direction you go, you end the hike going up. This hike is mostly through forest and follows the stream in many areas. I would not recommend this one for little kids. There are a few spots with steep drop offs from the trail. With easy access to Denver, this is a good hike if you want to get out in the woods and need something close.

Beautiful views! I brought my dog to hike and she loved it- we met several other people with dogs too who were all very friendly. I didn’t wish I had snow shoes until the end when I started sinking in waist deep snow and my dog started disappearing completely under the snow- it was moderately challenging but well worth it!

Did this hike 11/10 and it was a pretty quiet trail. I enjoyed the hike but the one negative was that there aren’t many good views of the mountains. It was still nice to get out and be by the water which was frozen over in some parts. Overall I recommend doing this trail for sure

Great 5 mile lollipop trail, clearly marked. There were some nice creek crossings for the dogs to play in. I’ll definitely be back!

This hike was good to get out and move. Not a lot of sights to see and really only one or 2 that are worth the hike. But there is nothing big to see really at any point. Mostly through the forest, which is nice, but there are a lot better hikes in Colorado. It is nice to be by the water most of the hike and hear that. I was one of maybe 2 people on the trail without a dog. Great trail for dogs as it is not too steep and mostly gradual up and down. No dangerous spots for them either.

We really enjoyed this hike. We encountered only one other trail user. We used winter hiking boots with crampons. This was sufficient to make it all of the way to the end of the trail. No need for snowshoes or backcountry skis today. It snowed throughout our hike and was windy, especially when nearing the lake at the end. There's a waterfall flowing into the lake which isn't frozen over yet. A thin layer of ice currently coats most of the lake. A standard car with good all season tires can make it to the foot of the trailhead.

Good, easy hike - little surprised to see it was moderate. Nice views! Only negative was a good chunk of the drive up was unpaved, and it had rain/snowed so an unanticipated muddy car.

I took Chavez to Beaver Brook. Overall this was a very enjoyable hike. Tons of forest, good inclines and declines. Most of the trail runs along the brook which is so incredibly soothing to listen to. There are parts that are very narrow where you are walking on rocks along a narrow and steep edge, but I thought that was super fun. I went on Monday and it was very quiet. Passed a few hikers, but was mostly alone. It was very relaxing and I will definitely do this hike again. 10/10 recommend!

Beautiful hike!!

beautiful moderately strenuous trail. went on Sat. not too crowded

Taxing uphill and downhill, steep trail! About a mile in, ya really start to feel it in your knees haha. Awesome challenge and an amazing lower body workout! :)

Beautiful hike, follows a creek most of the way which is nice. We went Chavez to beaver brook, challenging at some spots with a lot of up hill, especially towards the end. Some cool spots you can climb up to get good mountain views. Went on a Saturday (10/20) and it was pretty busy but not horrible

If you’re not stopping here, why come?! Great view. Had a snowball fight on the continental divide.

Beautiful vista from up top. Definitely worth the rocky climb.

Beautiful forested hike with moderate elevation gain. Easy access off I-70. Nice features and scenery including several small stream crossings, tilted metamorphic rock outcrops, and a nice mix of aspens and evergreens. Always a good hike, very tranquil.

Beautiful hike! Not many high-peaks in view, but at least 8 or 9 stream crossings! Love the varied terrain and well-marked trail. We went CCW and enjoyed the rocks/scrambles. This would be gorgeous in September with the changing of the leaves as there were quite a few aspen trees. Great parking lot with many spaces and pit toilets. I can see that this trail would be great year-round.

Stock Wrangler JLU up and down with ease in 4wd High at the end of summer. Fun trail with great rewards; more to explore in Jeep and on foot. Nonmotorized use allowed year round according to gate’s sign in the AllTrails photos, Sean D, but it also says no parking at the gate.

Not keen with going down hill first, nice a shady for sunny day hikes.

Excellent mild hike. Good for groups of differing levels and capabilities. Parking was crowded on a Sunday afternoon.

Great views. Brought my 13, 11 & 6 year old. A bit long for them but they made it. Beautiful hike

*** (October 20th) 4th of July Road is very slippery right now and snow/ice covered in spots. Recommended to have good winter or A/T tires and 4wd ***

One of my favorite hikes in the front range. Amazing views the entire way and best of all it’s dog friendly! If you’re going in late September or later I’d recommend some sort of traction device on your feet for the icy spots in the shade near the beginning.

It’s short but a very fun and rewarding workout. Great views from the top. Hop on the Switzerland trail at the trailhead if you want to add on some mileage.

Question - can you still hike to the lake with the gates officially closed?

closed for the season as of Oct 18, 2018. disappointed. I took my stock Raptor up, zero issues... not even close to breaking a sweat. With a stock half ton truck, you will likely bottom out in a few spots, especially the first rut. Subarus won't make it without damage, end of story. looked promising but the gate was closed about 3/4 mile up. tight turn around.

Went in for a hike on Thursday 10/18. Trail was nearly empty and in great condition. For being such a quick drive from Denver, it’s hard to beat. I would recommend going down Chavez right away otherwise you go uphill at the end

Beautiful but lots of ice and snow now. Sketchy traction but lovely if you want to be surrounded by the mountains with rushing water and pines all around. Easy isn’t really a fair description of this area now with ice and snow packed walking areas but it’s still doable if you’re an average hiker

Lovely hike close to Denver. Did it counterclockwise in 3 hours (a moderate pace for the first half and slow for the latter half). Parking was easy at 9a on Saturday and there were a nice number of people— enough to not feel alone if something happened, but not busy. Very peaceful.

You should definitely take the time to see this overlook!
