Great hike with dog

October 25 18 - some snow on the trail which made it a little slippery but doable. Our first time on the trail and it was very well marked with blue paint. Highly recommend driving past the "Trout club private property" signs until the end of the road. There is a public parking lot for the hiking trail.

I loved everything minute of this hike, but I would not rate it is easy. It is a continual uphill walk through the woods, over roots and rocks. I felt like I needed to be looking down the entire time to watch my footing. The trail was a very well marked at the bottom and the top, but the middle section less so and I know I got off the trail at some point. Nevertheless, I loved this trail. I walked up the trail, and took the road back down which was beautiful itself but in a different way.

Got to be in pretty good shape !!! Not a beginners trail!!! Great hike !!!

Beautiful views

Please note... For parking if you see the "Private Property" sign, keep going. The Trout Club has signs up everywhere, but you can bypass the sign to park. We did not, parked in the lower lot and walked 1 mile to the trail head.
The hike was pretty easy for the first mile or so and it became a steady increase in incline. Lots of beautiful sights. Plenty of brooks for my dog to drink from. There is a nice waterfall before you get to the lodge. The view is not awesome at the lodge, but do they fret -- walk out and up a tiny bit for a beautiful sight! There's a map at the lodge. The trail marked with no milage, follow it!
Our friends 10 year old daughter came and had no issues!

What a beautiful hike

Sweet trail, easy start, a section of steeper trail, but not bad. Some nice waterfalls along the way. There was a pretty heavy fog up top today, it made for a beautiful hike with the mix of fog and fall foliage. Taylor Lodge was the perfect place to stop and have a snack before heading back down!

Loved this hike! Went up the Halfway House Trail to Long Trail then down Sunset Ridge. Long Trail was along the ridge so the views were incredible. The hike wasn't that hard. It was perfect fall hiking weather (~55 degrees) and it was pretty crowded at the top. The views from the top were incredible!!!

9/23/18 Today was just a nice partly cloudy day for us too hike. It was in the 60's. We began the hike at 10:50am.Started on the monroe trail which is slightly steep. Then took Deans trail which was very nice and tranquil, was able to keep a steady pace. Make sure when you see an big open field on the right too go over and look and see the camel's hump from a distance. Spectacular view, an artist and photographers dream!! Then on to long trail where it gradually increases in altitude and also more obstacles to face with roots, rocks, boulders to scale with bare hands and on knees. Some spots slippery and wet on rocks and gravel. Then at the summit was unbelievably great feeling off happiness of this sight. We saw lake Champlain and 3 other mt peaks. The summit had a very neat alpine tundra biome as well.
An excellent hiking experience. Total hours for us was 5hrs 44 min. with 31,608 steps on pedometer. This was our first hike at 4,083ft. Be sure to bring warm clothing or extra shoes just in case. The summit can be windy and cold if it's not in summer season.

An easy 1 mile each way hike that I could do with my toddler on my back. Beautiful views of the lake and Adirondacks. The only complaint is that it was extremely crowded, but we were expecting that since we went on a beautiful fall Sunday so no big deal.

Great views and amazing trails!

Incredibly dangerous with the wet boulders. I slipped ~10 times myself but didn't fall nor get hurt. Be cautious!

Beautiful and quick hike. About two hours, round trip

Nice hike. Decided to take devil's chair trail after the summit. It was very narrow with lots of interesting crevices. Loved it.

We did the sunset ridge trail out and back. Decided not to do the loop once we got to the top. It was a great hike! More challenging than we were anticipating.

loved this trail. 2.3 miles of easy going trail but it's all business once you hit long trail north. challenging and scenic. I would not do Deans' for the decent or when wet.

Amazing views. Quite challenging.

Great loop but not to be underestimated. I suggest Monroe to Dean, then Long Trail to the peak- this way most of your scrambling is going up, not down. Note that on the Dean trail, once you have reached the saddle, there is a well marked side trail to the right that leads to a large marshy clearing- to your left is a large rock- the views of Camel's Hump from the top of that rock are outstanding. On the way back, check out the alpine trail, about a third to half way, there is a side trail to the right that leads to a piece of the left wing of a B-52 that crashed into the mountain in the early 60s...

If you've got friends or family visiting you in Vermont, Mount Philo is the perfect way to spend a few hours. A very easy mile each way gets you some great views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding areas. Very crowded in the summer, try to hike this one around 5 or 6 pm to catch the setting sun over Lake Champlain.

Nice family friendly hike. You can choose to stick to path or follow the paved road both up and down. Offers some beautiful views of Lake Champlain.

Perfect hike for beginners. Gives a challenge at the beginning, great view at the top and easy paved road on the way down. I would have preferred a wooded path the entire way but this hike was enjoyable. We passed many of all ages, 3 years to 70s. Some of the younger kids were complaining but our 8 year olds did great. The path was hard packed and steps were available in some areas.

one of the high peaks in VT, she is magnificent

We hike Mount Philo with our kids a few times a year and it is always a fun adventure!

Hiked this trail again with friends. It’s a fun hike with several options to take side trails!!!

great views and an easy hike. picnic area at the top.

This was such a fun hike. Starts out easy and gets increasingly steeper. It took me less than 2 hours up and back with time to stop for photos. I will definitely return in the Fall.

Beautiful view, nicely maintained trail, kid friendly and high foot traffic. Wish it was a little less busy but it was a VT summer day, can’t expect to have the trail to ourselves. Was a great hike with the kiddo.
