Great little hike but definitely wish it was longer. Crampons or Yak Tracks are definitely useful if you’re doing it in winter. Beautiful views at the top for a short hike, though!

Steep climb this one but worth it for the view at the top. Makes Calgary look like a tiny village! I tried to run all the way up it but it’s steep and not for the faint hearted. I had to stop a few times on the way up! Very very cold and windy at the top so wrap up warm if you are walking it. Ran all the way down easily in walking boots in 20 mins. No spikes needed as most of the track is rocky and/or earthy. Minimal snow or frost at present. Good runner will go up and down in around 75 mins. Slow walker will take 3-4hours. Highly recommend this for runners and walkers as a challenge with a reward;-)

Great day at Chester Lake today! Definite incline at the beginning to get things going but levels out further into the trail. Has been snowing pretty good but the trail is relatively packed still. Definitely recommend either snowshoes or spikes and poles. Friend did manage the trail with just hikers and poles however it made for a couple of slippery descents in areas. Got on the trailhead at 9am so it was a nice and quiet hike on the way to Chester Lake. Trail was definitely getting busier on the way down. Would do this hike again!

really nice but a little bit short.

Great hike. Lots of skiers coming down the northern side of the loop.

Would do it again repeatedly.

it was incredible! so much snow and the views at the top were amazing!!

I would definitely rate the hike as difficult for inexperienced hikers. The trail is steep until you reach the ridge, I feel like with ice cleats and poles it’s much easier to summit with the snow to grip onto as opposed to dirt in the summer. One of my top seven under seven (ish) for sure, great hike worth the views. Today’s weather was ideal beautiful and sunny.

My first ever hike. Amazing view from the top

Trail is clearly marked and packed down. Micro spikes and poles recommend. Absolutely amazing views all around, definitely recommend doing this one

Snow packed conditions but easily completed with hiking boots, wore my spikes on the way back down which provided better traction. Nice view at the Pass, tried to complete the Midnight Peak trail but the snow was deep so I turned around near the peak.

Breathtaking views from the top! Today was a beautiful day with no wind. Definitely would do again!

Hiked on Saturday was a beautiful sunny day, no need for snowshoes as it was packed snow. It was not icy at all, but spikes or poles would be helpful for the upward and downward climbs and descents. I did it with just hiking boots and poles and was just fine. For those that have not done this trail it is easy going for about a km then it’s a steady climb for approximately 2km, then it levels off. Bring something to sit on ( small tarp will do) to have your lunch or snack when you get to the top!

Did it clockwise today. Very windy once on the ridge. Good views.

Completed on Jan. 12. Very little snow and only required spikes on the back loop. If you want to extend the hike, complete the back loop ( check out prairie mountain and prairie creek route ). Different views and adds about an hour to the overall experience. Easy hike for experienced hikers; hard for beginners.

Good hike, sun was here, no need of spikes. The view at the top worst it ! Just be aware that the main of the trail is on gravely road just the last kilometers are on a mountain trail.

We hiked Tamnuska loop today (January 13, 2019). Most sections were dry. However, spikes are needed to reach its summit.

Excellent hike. Beautiful winter views. You would be fine to hike it with ice spikes if it has not snowed in a while.

Hear about Chester Lake all the time and been wanting to try it since we moved here four years ago. Beautiful blue sky day. Fair number of cars in the lot (20 or so) when we started but when we left at 4:30 we were the only ones there. We used ice trackers. It's possible to go with just boots (trail is hard packed) but later in the day the sun warmed the snow and some of the downhill sections (it's all downhill on the way back) were really slippery. I must admit the long uphill was a little more than I expected but I made it.

Completed the trail yesterday on a perfect sunny Saturday. Tons of snow all the way up and we lost our way several times because very few people had done the trail since the last snowfall, but we were able to manage, even over the boulder field. The views though were worth the slog through the snow! We did eventually turn back just short of the peak because our boots and socks were completely drenched from the sometimes knee-deep snow (may want to bring snowshoes, although would be extremely cumbersome through a lot of the trail). We will definitely have to do it again in the summer!

Clear most of the way, I recommend micro spikes for the last 3 kms. You’re in the forest most of the way but are welcomed with a great panoramic view of the mountains once you hit the ridge. I’d say this is Moderate.

Gorgeous hike. We didn’t need our snowshoes because the snow was so packed down. But, spikes were helpful. We’ll be doing this hike again soon.

I did on Jan 11th. Trail was covered with packed snow. Very steep , but end of trail was heaven. The weather was sunny, so perfect. I would like to recommend this trail with heavy icepickers. We thankful for having amazing view.

besides the wind at the begining, the conditions were great as of January 12th!

In my view. This was a great hike. First couple km is a bit hard and last 1 km the rest is very relaxing walk. The view at the top is worth every step I would rate it as moderate. Thank you All trails it helped get me started.

Hard to rate. If you’re a beginner this is hard. If you’re an experienced hiker this is a beginner trail. Nothing technical. That being said, it is a great workout and the views are incredible. Well worth it. We only had to put our spikes on during our descent on the loop.

Did this hike today on January 12th. There was quite a bit of snow on the trail, but it was still fairly easy to follow. The deep loose snow near the top slowed us down a bit, but it was still doable! Definitely a fun hike with beautiful views at the top. Took us about 4.5 hours, not going at a particularly fast pace.

A warm winter has allowed the trail to be dry and accessible! Fantastic January hiking! Lunch by the river before hiking back made for a fun day for the whole family!

Enjoyed the views, came across (what we suspected) a film set down by the river. Nice nature walk to get out of the city for a bit.

A fantastic loop! Make sure to add this onto Prairie Mountain Trial to get the most out of your outing. The way down is way easier and has some amazing views.
