Nice, fairly easy. Started recording 1km into walk. Combo of beach, rocks and shaded and exposed track.

Incredible hiking - Parks Vic rangers mentioned they are late on grooming the trails this season. Lots of overgrown vegetation on the trails but overall still maintained. Lots of snakes, mosquitos, and flies this year due to wetter climates. Gorgeous scenery. Much respect to the land and First Nations people who’s ongoing culture is deeply rooted to the land. Please walk gently and remain in respect for all creatures, plants, and land at all times.

HikingGreat!

A gorgeous track through the Otway National Park hiking both along the coastline and inland, along walking tracks, board walks, stair cases, rocky steps, beach, 4WD tracks, gravel roads, bridges, some rock-hopping and bits of well marked track that have become a little overgrown since spring. A really lovely easy multi-dayer to do over 8 days for the 8 different campsites available. I did it over 6 days and it was still relatively comfortable. The 2 x 24km days were long but manageable. Well marked trail | Lots of seats along the way, particularly when you get your first sighting of the coast for a while | Great shelters with large map at each site | Great toilets at campsites with plenty of lou paper | Plenty of water in tanks at this time of the year | Telstra reception is very good (Devil's Kitchen was the only site where you need to go to the lookout to get a few bars) Vodaphone is terrible • Favourite part of the hike: Day 4 from Melanesia Beach to Ryan's Den. Quite untamed with a huge variety of vegetation, overgrown grasses, ladders, along the edge. Just different really. • Favourite campsite: Definitely Johanna Beach | Least favourite campsite: Cape Otway • Wildlife sighted: 3 snakes | 1 echidna | 1 bush mouse | Lots of kangaroos | Lots of koalas heard but not sighted around Elliot Ridge • Top Tips: Take your shoes off for the beach walks... So refreshing! • Route suggestions: If you can only go for 4 nights, the best parts are from Aire River to 12 Apostles. • If you want to do the whole thing in 5 nights, the following would be the best itinerary based on itinerary and best camp grounds D1: Apollo Bay -> Blanket Bay - 22km D2: Blanket Bay -> Aire River - 21km D3: Aire River -> Johanna Beach - 14km D4: Johanna Beach-> Ryan's Den - 13km D5: Ryan's Den to Devil's Kitchen - 13km D6: Devil's Kitchen -> 12 Apostles - 16km

Hiking

Completed in 7d/6n. Could be easily done in 6d/5n or 4d/3n for someone quite trail fit. Spectacular coastal views. Mostly cliff top mixed in with forest and beach walking. Facilities all very good. Quite accessible for someone looking to step up to a longer bushwalk. Would have muddy sections and river crossings when wet, were avoidable in dry and low tide. Still has sections of road/fire trail which gives this 4 stars.

HikingGreat!

We did the first half from Apollo Bay to Aire River over 4 days/3 nights. A beautiful walk with so much varied terrain, landscape, vegetation and animal life. Facilities at each campsite are good and nicely separated. Looking forward to doing the second half in the future.

Completed this walk in Nov 2020 over 7 days. Loved the ever changing scenery. One minute you’re in the forest and then you pop out to walk on the beach or along the cliffs. Camp facilities were good and there was plenty of rainwater when we walked. Some days are very exposed so remember plenty of sunscreen and a hat. We did see snakes nearly everyday but it is their breeding season at the moment. They pretty much scurried away as we walked by. I recommend gaiters and carrying a snake bite bandage if you’re worried. We hired an Epirb emergency device which gave us peace of mind. Most days we had some Telstra phone service at different times, but it definitely cannot be relied upon. The trail is pretty easy to follow but it is overgrown in places and a vague track at times, but we managed to find our way. Make sure you buy the map booklet at the visitors centre $19.95. Highly recommend this walk for your bucket list, it’s the most beautiful.

I did this solo from 23-26th July over 4 days. Smack bang in the middle of Winter and I did not come across any other hikers doing the complete walk (probably due to the combination of Winter and covid) I did 2 sections every day. The first 2 days were still quite easy. The following 2 days were more challenging. The coast was beautiful (as expected) and the forests were also varied and also stunning. There are a couple of sections on very quiet roads/tracks. Not ideal but it did not detract from the beauty. The weather was lovely and I timed my ending to be at the 12 Apostles for sunset. Amazing! And so few tourists due to the covid restrictions. I only camped 3 nights due to taking 4 days to finish - Blanket Bay, Aire River and Ryan"s Den. The view from Ryan's Den is stunning. Blanket Bay is almost on the beach which is lovely too. Also check out the toilet view at Devil's Kitchen campsite (even if you're not staying there). NB And the signage was really quite clear.

I recently did this trail in 4 nights, 5 days. Got the train/bus down on a Monday and train/bus back on Friday. Was able to walk the whole thing although walking from Johanna Beach to Devils Kitchen camp in one day was a bit tough. Really well maintained trail though and very easy to follow. Watch the tide if you are attempting any of the beach routes as I nearly got caught out at one of them. Plenty of water in the tanks at this time of year too. Only saw 4 other people the entire time.

Actually close to 110km all up. did this hike solo over 3.5days at xmas, just booked every 2nd campsite and pushed on. lots of snakes (5) on my 3rd day. the beach exit from milanesia beach to ryans den alt route is extremely overgrown and not safe to attempt because of possible snake bites.

Very well signposted and maintained. We walked the trail over 7 days, with a good drop halfway. Such luxury! Campgrounds were clean and (for us at least) quiet. Stunning scenery, surprising views, wildlife...the GOW has it all. Can recommend

I loved this walk. You walk through trees for a while then come out the the cliffs overlooking the sea. It is beautiful. April is a great time to do it.

HikingMuddyOver grown

I started at Apollo Bay and hiked the full 8 days. Was great besides there not being a lot of signage to tell you if you were still hiking the right track and how much further until the next camp ground. Also I ended up camping two nights with school groups which made the grounds loud and crowded. Otherwise the track itself is beautiful with great views.

there is a good booklet for the walk for about A$15 that you can buy in Apollo Bay which shows the low tide options if you want to explore some of the beaches and rock platforms. Most of this walk is fantastic but there are a couple of boring bits too that go inland on dirt roads. Great that you see so few people until you get close to The 12 Apostles. If you don't want to camp there is a local company called Walk91 who will transport you off and on the track. Would recommend 6 days but we did it in 5 days. It is very doable in 5 days but felt that there wasn't enough time to explore on two days or rest over lunch.

We did the 100km in 2 days for charity. It includes some really lovely views especially on the first 20-30km. Some beautiful scenic bays to stop if you have the time! Would highly recommend, but maybe over a few more days if you have the time!

Completed track ( 104 km) in 6 days and 5 nights. The GOW signs and numbers are useful. Mobile signal was not too bad and in all camping sides water tanks were full and well conserved. I saw a lot animals and all scenery was fantastic. I had a negative experience between Blanket Bay to Aire River as I stopped to buy a cold drink at lighthouse shop but the shop attendant was impolite toward me. Also after Johanna’s beach camping side there are few gates that must be kept locked, after last gate please be careful as there are a few wild kangaroos in the area. Please note that at this part of the track I was chased away by a male kangaroo who wanted kick and scratch me. I ended up running and strategically jumping out of lane seeking a place to hide in the bush until big fella moved away. I really enjoyed the last leg of the track, I highly recommend to stop at small village close to Riverlock. At this village there is a great a cafe shop and this may be an opportunity to have a cup of latte so you can reach twelve apostles fully charged. Have fun!
