Great winter hike. Lots of fresh snow. No need for snowshoes as long as you stay on the packed snow. If you wander off the packed snow you will immediately post hole up to your knees. Have fun and think snow!!! Look for the tiny snowman on the left of the trail as you are ascending about 1 mile in, thanks to yours truly

I have been on winter hikes I like better. This might be more stars in the spring, summer or fall. Except for the summit area with all the spruce and birch trees covered in ice and snow and the vista, there wasn't much to see. The summit area is really small and even with just two other people it feels crowded. I wouldn't want to be on this trail when there were more people.

I recommend wearing snow shoes! I didn’t and it was tough. My friend wasn’t able to make it but somehow I did. The views are amazing!

Ineffably beautiful the entire way up. Snow was packed down enough that I didn’t need snowshoes or micro spikes.

We did the hike right after a fresh snow...bad idea. The snow was around two feet and we walked all the way up, got soaked, all to get to the summit and see no view because it had started snowing and clouds rolled in. But by the looks of other peoples photos, it looks like a beautiful hike so I’ll have to come back. Check the weather before you go.

Way more packed down than I thought it would be. I did it with micro spikes but I could have done without. The ice on the trees is absolutely beautiful.

Great trail! Lots of snow now so if you have snowshoes, would highly recommend them! Still really nice to get out in some fresh snow and hike, even if we couldn’t see the view at the top with all the clouds and the snow coming down!

I’ve only hiked this trail during the winter. I didn’t need spikes or snow shoes. However it might have made the trek down a little easier. Once you start to get to the top the ice covering the trees makes it seem like you’ve stepped into another world. It was definitely worth the view.

Trail is quite packed down but a bit icy. I went up without micro spikes, so it’s doable, but definitely recommend them as they would likely make the trek up and down a bit easier. The ice on the tree branches was breathtaking—like walking in a winter wonderland lol. Overall the trail is fun, quick, and a great winter hike if you get the chance! Went up on a clear sunny day and the landscape is just stunning.

Very nice, moderate hike. It was a bit cloudy at the top but a beautiful day. Microspikes are highly recommended.

We forgot to turn back on the gps at the top. It was gorgeous and clear. All the pines were heavy with snow. Wide trails and quite an easy hike! Bring your spikes, but not an absolute necessity!

Trail was well marked and only muddy in a few spots but easy enough to avoid. Beautiful day and stunning view from Haystack Summit.

This is a very wet trail. It’s muddy in most places. Where it isn’t muddy, you’re walking in a shallow creek. Waterproof shoes are a must. Hiking poles helpful. Fun trail.
