Hiked on the 18th, no spikes nor snowshoes needed up to the abandoned cabins. Snowshoes needed beyond. Beautiful trail, will come back with skis next time!

Hmm AllTrails recording was way off, we went up to the ruins then headed back— watch says we did about 4 miles in 2ish hours. Beautiful day!!! Snowshoed but it was packed enough that most people on trail were in microspikes. Parking lot was packed for a Monday but only saw a couple of people on the trail.

Very nice trail with beautiful views of the valley and the mountains to the west of Minturn. this time of year you may want to consider yak tracks or snowshoes because the snow is still relatively deep. On the way down with regular hiking shoes we slipped on the snow quite a bit and post holed quite a bit which made for a tiring descent

Love this trail any time of the year. Just beautiful but also gets really windy. Pack your windbreaker and a hat. Packed snow today. Yak Trax would have been perfect. Quick hike to the old cabins and gorgeous views.

HikingGreat!Rocky

One of the best hikes I have been on. The towering Rockies over you when you get to Bison Mine is unbelievable. worth the hike. Be prepared to climb elevation.

5Apr2021. Perfect weather. 1.6 miles to cabin remains. The trail to that point was hard packed snow. Hiking shoes would suffice but wearing Yak Trax made it much more ‘comfortable’. Quite a few people and dogs for a Monday.

Spikes definitely helped with extra traction

Great hike today — the views are amazing at the end! It was nice to be wearing spikes, but they aren’t 100% necessary.

Great day out. Nothing needed besides hiking shoes and good spirits

It was a beautiful trail. However, if you plan to go anytime soon (4/3/21) I would wait. This trail has too much snow to safety complete without some intense gear. It looked super pretty and we’re super excited to go back in the summer but when we went yesterday, we only made it to the base of the waterfall.

HikingGreat!

It was a very nice trail! I like more secluded single track trails, and this was a very wide trail. Great for groups, but can get busy. I only clocked 3.5 miles. Was confused how it’s marked as 6.1? It took just over a mile to the cabins, and then I hiked around to try and get more miles! Very beautiful, just not as long as I thought.

Awesome spring day. Snowshoes required about 100 years beyond cabin area when following trail to the left. Then tracks ended about 1/4 mile beyond cabin. Four of us broke trail from that point on to just beyond and above the mine. Fantastic views of Mt Elbert and Mt Massive from there. Worth the extra effort. This is the 6.1 mile route. Some who took the trail to right from the cabin area made it to the ridge with no snow shoes. If only going to the cabin your route will be significantly shorter and only along a wide road.

Amazing hike on 3/31/2021. I believe I lost my drivers license somewhere on the trail. If anyone happens to find it please call me 970-227-6273. Thank you

We went mid day and there wasn’t a need for traction or floatation. I could see needing spikes early or late in the day if the temps are below freezing. We made it 300 yards past the cabins. Beautiful easy hike to that point.

such a beautiful spot in the winter! made it to the top with spikes and my friend didn’t use any traction. it was packed down pretty good until u come out of the trees where the cabin is and then it was lots of post holing. pretty busy on a saturday most people had snowshoes and skies and we had to watch out for skiers flying down the trail. will be back for the flowers

Beautiful trail. As previously stated, gradual incline to the cabins. My friend and I only wore spikes but you definitely need snowshoes past the cabins. We had to turn around about 100 yards or so past cabins. Got to trailhead at 10:30am. Lot was already filling up.

Beautiful winter hike! Hiked from the parking lot to the cabins for a spectacular view in about 1.5 hours round trip. Was able to hike easily in boots. Steady incline on the way up that was a good work out!

Beautiful trail! Hiked 3/20 snow shoes were helpful but not necessary. I only used them one I passed the cabins probably could have gotten away with just using spikes but it was nice to have when I was exploring around the cabins. Highly recommend!

Views of valley are well worth the hike! We needed snowshoes past about 0.5 miles in. Birds are very friendly and will perch on your hand if you are lucky enough to be a wildlife whisperer like my wife. Do this hike! You won’t regret the views at the end!!!

SnowshoeingGreat!Snow

Finally got to do this trail and it did not disappoint! Beautiful views and the cabins are SO cool!! (Cabins are located where the split is on the map btw). Snow shoed today after the snow over the weekend. It was quiet on a Monday afternoon. Only saw a couple other groups (some were skiing/boarding back down). Highly recommend this awesome trail!

HikingGreat!No shadeSnow

Only went as far as the mine, or actually about 20 feet away from it. Didn't have snowshoes so I only made it that far before falling in chest-deep. Getting to Boston (the ghost town) is easy without snowshoes or spikes - snow is packed down well. Getting from there to the mine, snowshoes are certainly advised if you have them. Winter is the best season for this hike, it is extremely photogenic. We saw three groups at the ghost town and one at the mine, but on the way back we passed over 20 groups (often 6-10 people) with no masks or social distancing. All cross-country skiiers. Go early to avoid that.
