the view at the top is well worth the hike

You will not find better views off the AT. The most underrated hike out there. Love love love.

Great views and rewarding hike. But if you’re looking for seclusion you will not find it here.

Hiked this with my wife, 10yo daughter, 9yo daughter, and 7yo son. Great trail and very popular. There were more people on the trail than I expected for a Friday morning. This trail was a return to hiking for me, and I managed fine. My wife is new to hiking, and this trail was a little taxing for her. My kids had a blast, but were ready to get back to the truck by the time we logged a 4.2 mile round trip. It was pretty humid and a great lesson about packing enough water and having a cooler waiting in the truck for the finish. Also, I was happy that I outfitted everyone with proper hiking boots or shoes. The trail was rockier than I imagined. Of course I saw some hiking in tennis shoes, but I’m super glad I wasn’t one of them. All in all, great family outing and we all slept well that night!!!

Parking lot is easy to find via directions through the app. There is plenty of parking, but can fill up as the day goes on. When we got there at 8am, it was pretty empty, but by the time we left 1:30, it was pretty full. There are multiple portajohns, which is nice to have at the end/beginning of your hike.

We did the loop starting with the ridge trail, which starts about a .5 mile up the road from the parking lot. The first quarter of the hike was moderate, rocky but not too steep and quite lovely. The rock scramble was our first real experience with a real rock scramble and although a few places were a bit difficult to navigate, it was doable and kind of fun! There are a few spots where you really have to become intimate with the rocks around you. That said, there were a few spots along the way with some spectacular views!

I believe it was a little under 4 miles to get to the summit and man is the climb worth it!

After a much more moderate descent down the saddle trail, there is a shelter with a bathroom, but no water. Past that, you walk on the fire road back to the parking lot with not much to see except the river in some spots. However, it is a nice, easy descent after all that hard climbing.

It is worth noting that there is no cell service at the parking lot or any area around it, so have an idea of how to get back!

Easy hike. Down and back in about 2.5 hours. Worth it at the top

Trail is a steep incline but the relatively short distance to walk for a great view make this a great trail

My husband and I did this trail on July 1 early in the morning and it was phenomenal. It had rained the week before, so the multiple falls had a nice flow. You travel along the river the whole time, with multiple chances to get down to the water, which is great on a hot day to cool off. The trail was slightly rocky and a bit steep, but nothing terribly challenging. If you’re lookin to add a bit more distance, you can keep walking along the river on the Rose River Loop Trail. Great short, photogenic hike!

difficult but worth the view!

A lot trees blocking the trials.

Not as easy as some state. I am 29 and in good shape but saw many trying the trail and turning around. its not ling but the climb in elecation is fairly quick. It is 100% worth it if you can make it up!

Beautiful scenery, challenging hike, wonderful views.

I’ve hiked Old Rag many times. Today I saw 5 bears. Two on the actual path. I was nervous to walk by, so just waited until he moved.

This humbled me! Totally worth it though. Rose River Falls was the hardest in my opinion. Definitely take advantage of the oppurtunity to rest at the bottom of Dark Hollow.

probably one of my favourite hikes to date. beautiful and full of everything good in the mtns.

One of the bests hikes we have been on, the scrambles were a lot fun. The walk back down the fire road a little boring, but not a big deal.

Went with a group of 8. Stopped quite a bit for food/water and overlooks on the way up. About 2-3 miles up to the summit which took about 2.5 hours and then about 5 miles down which another 2.5 miles. Bring about 2L of water per person. You'll spend about 5 hours hiking, but worth every effort.

Great hike!

An awesome hike, lots of switchbacks on the trail and a lot of steep inclines. The last half mile of the trail is pretty much a scamper up some fairly tough rocks. But when you get to the tooth you’ll know why you did it. I almost stepped on a rattlesnake on this trail as well so my adrenaline was in a bit of overdrive. Highly recommended! Will be doing this again soon!

always there to provide awesome suggestions on almost everything I want to do trailwise.
love it

Hike through dense woods to open up to a vast view point at the top. Short and easy for some amazing views

Easy hike going down. Pretty steep coming up.

Easy with kids

After heading down the trail (which, due to being a bit steep at times, was a little rough on the knees ... but otherwise enjoyable) we took time to sit and listen to the cascading waterfall at the bottom of the trail. (Along with about a billion other people ... okay, not really that many, but when you're trying to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature ... it kinda looked and sounded like it.

Went on this so many times when I was younger, but took Layla and Sarah and Trinity up this past fall and had a great time. Need a 4x4 to get to trail!!!!!

Short but sweet. The stony man summit is really beautiful. The view is just mesmerizing. Easy enough to hike with children. I highly recommend it.

I’ve been hiking this for almost 30 years. It is one of my favorite hikes and different every time. The view at the top makes it all worth while.

Very pleasant hike, easy walking without too much elevation change. The view is spectacular however it was quite humid the day we were there so visibility wasn’t the greatest.
