Not quite sure why they classify this trail as moderate... it was very icy and when you come down the first summit if you don’t have traction get your butt to the ground and start aiming for grabs!!! Lol it was fun but I wasn’t expecting it to have a certain degree of difficulty... I went with my water bottle, and my car keys... thought I was going for a little stroll... not quite a stroll... but breath taking views for sure!!! I recommend it just remember to take your time! I just started this whole hiking game I can think of at least a few things I could’ve done to better prepare myself

My wife and I went for a Nordic ski in late March and it was a blast. The trails are scenic and easy to maneuver, and have a good mix of easy and challenging skiing. We will definitely do this trail again!

Excellent hike with some great views, however, the trail was far more technical and challenging than I expected. I would highly recommend snowshoes and hiking poles. I snowshoed clockwise and the first half was moderate so I would recommend doing in and out on that side if you want an easier hike plus it follows along a brook which is nice. If your up for the challenge than the whole loop is excellent, just make sure your prepared.

Great views, last time I hiked here was 34 years ago. I see people like squeezing through ledges now...the paint blazes are in sad shape but the rut in the ground is pretty hard to miss, the snow is well packed down and spikes are highly recommended. Counter clockwise is easier on the knees coming down, I'm an old fart now...

This hike may have the best views for a relatively short hike of moderate effort. It's a 4.4 mile loop with one small stream crossing at the begining of the trail to Welch. If you want an easy short hike with views take the trail to Welch up a little over one mile to a large ledge with views east to the Sandwich Range. A very busy trail in the summer and weekends.

A bit muddy and the top 1/3 would be easier with spikes. Otherwise, nice hike. Saw coyote or wolf tracks at the top and bear tracks on the way down! Views were quite good.

This was a great winter hike. We hiked up the short/steep trail and down the longer/more gradual descent trail. it was very icy but with some spikes totally doable. Great views at the top for a short hike. Park in the designated trail spots up in the North Country school lot near the trailhead. We were told by a local that you will get a ticket if you park on the street.

I did Rattlesnake just before Poke-O. It ended up being tougher than my previous hikes here. I had to navigate up a huge wall of ice in my microspikes. I hit the Summit right at sunset. I headlamped it out and bushwhacked around the ice wall on my way down (no problem). A nice day of elevation gain.

Nice quick hike, best view is from the overlook to the west of the summit. Stay to the right when you reach the summit loop split and it will take you directly to the overlook. Uphill the whole way but short. Definitely wear micro spikes or snowshoes in winter as the trail gets extremely icy. A section of the trail becomes a short waterfall but you can easily go around it. My 10 year old loved it.

Nice trail, no one on it. Starts off as hard wood slopes and at top Spruce and a lot of rocky ledges. Trail was icy today, you need traction. Moose tracks at very top.

Great views but if you want a good workout type hike in the winter this isn’t it. When icy, a lot of the trail is so slow and you need cramp ons. Would be a Great trail to run when not icy. Also not very challenging for a hike. Not much elevation gain, I’d rate it easy, it’s a stretch to call moderate, maybe only when there’s ice.

Great little hike even on a slightly rainy day and would be a nice spot to have a quick picnic/hike!

Totally underrated hike. The views are great, and it was easy enough that we could do it after a strenuous day of activity. We hiked the longer, easier route for both ways.

This is easily my favorite trail in the Northeast! It's so incredibly beautiful, with plenty of bald faces and slabs to hike up, and forest around to look at. It's fairly strenuous and took us about ~3 hours to complete, round trip. The top is very nice for picnics!

Hiked on 02/01/18.
Hike only took around 3 hours stopping lots to take pictures and drink a cold one. Trail is packed down nicely which made it very easy to hike on. Temperature was cold but no wind and sunny skies which made for incredible views.
Highly recommend this hike it was tons of fun!

Actually did this trail by starting at Owens Pond and coming down Copperas, which totaled about 4 miles. Owens is more scenic. Also, I certainly you wouldn’t want to have started the walk climbing up from the copperas trailhead. Nice little leanto at the pond though.

Sunny and cold winter day. Challenging in the snow but the view of the lake was worth it!

Hiked on 12/15/17. Weather was cold but little to no wind which made this an ideal winter hiking day.
Decided to go counter clock wise based off of other reviews. The ground surface had about 6-8 inches of snow in some areas, and others greater than a foot, and deep in some spots towards the tops of welch and dickey. We made the mistake of thinking the first false peak was the top of Welch only to realize it was indeed a false peak. It was certainly tough to get traction in some areas where there was nothing to grab onto. Microspikes came in the clutch on the ledges especially ascending towards the top Welch, and to Dickey as well. Top of Welch is beautiful, 360s views of the white mountains.

After Welch we realized there was a short descent to start the ascent on Dickey. Descending in the snow is super tricky as the snow covers up the rocks and roots which adds to complexity of a winter hike. The trail felt like a big zig zag to get to the top going through tight spaces through the big rocks and onwards to the top. The top of Dickey is timeless. Pushing close to 3,000 feet. After Dickey on the descent there is one of of the ledge where you are literally about 15 feet away from a big cliff area, made the hike a little bit more exciting to say the least. The descent felt long, and was tough due to the snow covering up the technical parts of the trail.

Given the conditions of the trail I would only recommend to people who are prepared and are experienced. Snow is tricky to hike in.

I am looking forward to hiking this one again in the spring. Five Stars. Live Free or Die!

Total Time took us 5 hours and 17 minutes to complete the loop at 4.95 miles.

Snowy day good winter conditions. Trail conditions good with broken trail. Icy ledges towards the summits.

Light traction fine.

Pretty hike. It was certainly microspike worthy-especially next to the cascades. The yellow blazes could use some touching up and the trail could use some maintenance - lots of down large trees on the 1st 1/2 of the trail. Would like to come back during the summer to really take advantage of the gorgeous cascades.

The New Trail offers several great views to keep you motivated to press on. The work they did to the trail is really amazing. I never went up the old trail but several locals enjoying the Tower truly agree the trail they placed now is great. Keep a note round trip does change to 3.6 miles. Also Someone has however removed the sticks that were placed to keep you from taking the old trial. So when you come to the Y with red trail placards going two opposite directions note that the one that is brighter and newer is the one to follow. When you come up to this section don’t take the trail to that cuts off to your right keep moving straight ahead. You will soon step across a stream and even though it seems to be taking you in the opposite direction of the Fire Tower it will wrap around and be well worth it. Great rewarding Views from the Summit with no need to climb the tower.

Great hike with some great views. Trail was in great shape wit a little bit of scrambling and slick rock. Great trees colors with many photo ops.

We really enjoyed this hike. The views from the top were tremendous. We chose this one because it said easy and kid friendly. We had our 5 year old with us. If you have a young one, definitely avoid the more challenging path. The descent on the easy path was challenging enough for her (and me with a 2 year old on my back) with the ice and snow.

Great hike for the day after Thanksgiving. It has a variety of muscle groups used if you do the whole loop. We climbed up the Welch side and came down Dickey. Micro spikes were a must once we hit the ledge area. Very icy in a lot of spots and had to bush wack around those area but it was an enjoyable hike none the less. I would not recommend it for beginners in its current condition today. I have a few pics, If I can post them I will. Great views and as long as use come prepared, I think you would like it too.

Very well kept trail. Had a lot of fun out there on Thanksgiving day. Saw many others as well. I brought nothing but wished I had brought the spikes. Bring spikes, winter is here for sure.

The Friends of Poke-o-moonshine have done a really nice job of upgrading the trail. This one offers more views outward on the way up than the Observer trail. A really awesome late Fall hike.

nice hiking, pretty, pleasantly hilly, but hard to follow the route, yellow marks on trees help. we are pretty experienced and ended up taking a completely different route than planned.

Pretty steep for the first half mile but after that it gets a bit easier. The views at the top are blue-hued and beautiful, also giving you a nice view of the interstate. ;-) Only giving this a two as I did enjoy the view but do not see myself doing this hike again.
