Summited both Algonquin and Wright today 1/15/19. Just short of 9 mile RT. Trails were all packed down. I used crampons the entire way. Good sharp microspikes would also have been ok. First mile is easy. Second mile moderate. Third mile moderately difficult and after that steep and difficult. Algonquin summit is hard to follow. Back down I went up Wright. Steep up but only 4/10ths of a mile. Well marked with cairns. 7 hours for the round trip.

Amazing hike. Trail was very packed down and easy to follow. It gets really steep after you cross Phelps brook. The approach to the summit above tree line was very technical and needed concentration and skill. Very steep and icy at some points. Once you reach the summit the views are amazing but the wind makes it so you cant stay very long. Overall the hike was long but gradual and well worth the views.

Hiked with a friend on 0108.

HIGHLY recommend crampons, snowshoes and trekking poles.

Both peaks round trip took us 8.5 hours.

Crampons are a necessity and snowshoes would be a massive help.
We left our snowshoes behind to spare the weight on our backs when we weren’t using them, but then regretted it as we hiked to Esther in snow so deep that it came up to our waists in certain areas.

The views on the trail are breathtaking.
The climb up to whiteface was intense: icy, drop offs, wind... when we reached the wall, the amount of snow made it almost impossible, but a hiker before us carved out a bit of a path and our trek poles kept us steady.

Sunny ski, beautiful view. Do not consider it as a challenge. it's just fun. easier with microspikes

Beautiful winter hike. Can get icy so use crampons!

Completed this hike over the weekend. It was about 28 degrees out—perfect for a winter hike. The views were amazing. Very easy to navigate and microspikes were essential!

Crampons are a must for this trail as the trails are steep and icy.

Hiked the trail round trip in about 7 hours. Beautiful trail and amazing view at the top! 95% of the trail is uphill, so bring plenty of water and be prepared for quite a workout.

Perfect day out for a winter ascent. No need for showshoes, although we brought them the whole way up and down with us just in case. Definitely need microspikes the whole hike (we did see two guys without but I’m not sure how well they managed descending without). Packed snow the whole trail - easy to follow. Took my husband and I 4 hrs, 15 min at a fairly leisurely pace (for us) and spending a good 15 minutes at each summit.

Just completed this hike yesterday. Trail is very straight forward and took about 5 hours to complete with moderate amount of breaks. I didn’t have micro spikes nor snow shoes so the amount of ice on the trail made it very challenging. Crampons would be too much but I’d say micro spikes would have helped significantly. Views at the top of both mountains were amazing. Recommend to anyone looking for a moderately challenging day hike in the Adirondacks.

Completed 1/2/18. Was only able to summit Algonquin peak and had to pass up Wright due to time- so round trip was a little over 7 miles for me. Took me about 2 hours to reach the top of Algonquin and the same headed back- little over 4 hours round trip. Micro spikes or something of that nature is absolutely necessary for winter hiking here, pretty icy and steep grade at times. Easy going hike to the base of the mountain and then it gets tough. I’m a moderately experienced hiker in decent enough shape and this was a very challenging hike for me- there are some extremely strenuous portions and the ascent can be unrelenting at times. That being said, it’s difficulty wasn’t over the top and any one looking for a very challenging but do-able hike should consider this route. Summiting Wright would obviously have made this hike much more difficult so keep that in mind. Absolutely one of the most rewarding hikes I’ve competed, ever. The 360 view of the surrounding Adirondacks and the above tree line scenery is breathtaking. The path is a little hard to find near the summit, so take your time finding it and DO NOT STRAY OFF. The vegetation there in some cases are thousands of years old and incredibly slow growing. Very memorable hike.

Did both summits today. New Years Day. Microspikes are needed. Make sure they are sharp. Lots of ice. Glad I had this app as the summit of Porter is nondescript. Cascade was ridiculously windy,icy and somewhat dangerous on top. No views today. Took me 4 1/2 hours for the 6 miles. Probably only a 20 minute break.

Loved it. Hard walk up. Spikes are a must! We were essentially walking up a frozen stream the whole time. Everyone we met was so friendly.

This was my first time up Whiteface and Esther, attempting to complete the Adirondack 46. Steep climb to start for the first two miles. Once you reach the junction about two miles in, the walk to Esther is fairly easy compared to the beginning of the hike. The hike to Whiteface is steeper, but crossing and old ski lift and the wall breaks it up a bit with some cool views. The ridge over to Whiteface was a windy one, winds up to 40mph and -11° on the summit. The summit was set in the clouds but made for an awesome setting! Definitely wear the microspikes and bring snowshoes just in case! Loved this hike!

Great hike.....definitely needed micro spikes.... for someone like me coming to terms with my fear of heights (actually it’s a fear of falling) the top of Cascade offered beautiful views but challenged my phobia ... very exposed .. very open... I imagined sliding off the top but then got over myself.... that’s the point of all of this isn’t it? And it always helps hiking with your very best, very experienced friend.

Absolute best view you can ever have in New York State 2 of my friends and me just completed it yesterday on December 29th, 2018 it took us a total of 5 hours and 36 minutes up and about 5 hours down. Absolutely amazing hike. We have not done another high peak ever so this was incredibly difficult for us but we did it. The summit average temp was at -20°F with winds somewhere around 8mph it was amazing I highly recommend this to anyone with experience.

Did this trail in winter, easy if you’re prepared for it as it certainly requires some mild athleticism towards the top. If hiking in winter bring microspikes or snowshoes and definitely goggles for the summit push. Be prepared to break a sweat. Extremely rewarding.

This was my first attempt at hiking a high peak in the Adirondacks. I thought I was hiking Wright peak, but took a wrong turn at the sign at base of the mountain. I was told by another hiker once I reached the peak. It was MUCH MORE DIFFICULT than I ever imagined, but am soooo glad I did it!! And don’t believe these other hikers when they say it was easy!! It wasn’t!!!

Great hike and with clear skies the view is fantastic.

Spiks were required ( some people without them had to turn around). Couldn’t really use snowshoes even if i wanted. I suggest to do Porter first ( uneventful). Top of Cascade was covered with clouded and couldn’t stand ( at the top) due to strong winds ( lost my orange heat ;( )

Had a great time going up to Summit. Spikes up and down. Took almost three hours to reach summit. Only the first half hour was easy. The three thousand feet up and one thousand climb per mile in winter is moderate to difficult depending on your fitness level. Did this December 18th 2018

The trail is extremely well marked and relatively easy for the first mile and a half or so. We had to use crampons on the steep sections, but microspikes would suffice. This trail is definitely not for those who are unequipped for winter conditions. Came across some bear prints so be aware of that. It was a fun little day hike.

used snowshoes but microspikes wouldve been better had amazing views and wasn't to difficult took about 1hour and 45 minutes up for a pretty experienced hiker

Beautiful hike. Hiked it in the snow. Enjoyed every second. Well marked trail, a few uphill battles but pretty easy hike. I was lucky enough to have a clear day so the views were spectacular. some of the spots you have some branches in the way of the view but overall I have 0 complaints.

Hiked up to the summit with snowshoes the day after thanksgiving. This was our first time using snowshoes, and it took us much longer to summit than had we used spikes.

Beautiful views & well marked trails.

11/17/18 - fun hike, definitely glad to follow the route here and save cascade for last as porter was great but much less climactic. Lots of wind at the top of both so either don’t spend more than a minute or be prepared. Brought along snowshoes because we were told by a worker at EMS that you can be fined for not carrying/wearing them but we just carried them the whole way and wore crampons and gaiters. Mountain got fresh snow the day and night before but by 9 am the trail was pretty packed down. Started later than we would have liked and ran into 2 or 3 10+ groups so if you want solitude definitely go early. Make sure to constantly take sips from your camelback to keep it from freezing! Especially when up on the summits. Started around 9:10, stopped multiple times for food/equipment/layer changes, flew down after both summits and got to the car around 3:00.

J’ai fait le Giant le 11 novembre. Déjà bien enneigé et glacé, le sentier demeure ardu et peu balisé. Les crampons sont requis. Les conditions météo étaient idéales. J’ai pris 2.5 heures pour la montée et 1.5 heure pour la descente, le tout sur un bon rythme. Sous réserve de courir, il est difficile de faire plus rapidement. Le temps était magnifique et la vue au sommet est extraordinaire. À refaire...
